Never a Dull Moment on This Adventure

After leaving Srinagar, we headed towards Ladakh, meeting our new guide and driver along the way, just after the rich green countryside turned brown. Our new guide and driver were from Tibet and had very mild personalities, but very keen senses of humor. The road along the Himalayas was very winding, bumpy and narrow, and the driver sounded his horn at every turn, as we whipped around the mountains, going higher and higher. Occasionally, the driver and guide looked upwards and expressed concern over the Kashmir goat herds, running up and down the sides of the mountain. “Those herds can cause rock slides–just last week we had to wait three days while the army cleared the road”, he said.

Life on the Edge With My Fisheye!

OMG! Did our Tire Just Blow-Up????!!!!

Once, a speeding car from the opposite direction, passed so close that our car’s mirror hit theirs. Like most of our trips so far, it was all a bit too exciting and dangerous. Just as we were getting used to this, we went around yet another turn and almost ran into the leading truck of a long convoy of army trucks. The army truck blared his horn and motioned for us to back up, so back up we did. Still it wasn’t enough for the massive trucks to pass, and the horn sounded again. At this point our back tire was right on the edge of the road, just inches from a drop that would surely take hours to complete. Finally the horn stopped and the trucks sped past. Then there was a loud pop that emanated from the back of our SUV. We all brought our palm to our foreheads simultaneously, cursing in our own language. A tire blow-out??? The driver scanned the rear view mirrors, but all of the tires seemed okay. I volunteered to get out and inspect the situation, which drew a high-pitched “DON’T MOVE!” command from the the driver.

The guide turned around and asked if we had brought any bags of potato chips with us, drawing a sheepish look from my wife. Carefully she retrieved her backpack from the space behind us, and upon examining it, we found that her bag of “Magic Masala” had exploded and turned inside out, distributing the tasty snack all over her backpack. “You must never bring pressurized bags up to this altitude,” he admonished rather patiently. (WHO KNEW?!!) Sure wish we could get thos Magic chips in Bangkok!

Soon we were off again, reaching our camp, just before sunset.

About the Authors

Photographer George Edward Giunca, and his Thai wife, Apisatha, have traveled around Thailand armed with a circular fisheye lens to create a photo essay on the rich cultural diversity, and abundant natural beauty of the Kingdom of Thailand. Fleeing from angry water buffaloes, slapping huge mosquitoes, watching exotic festivals and religious rituals, gorging on delicious spicy food, applying aloe vera cream to sunburned skin, wading through rice paddies, getting drenched to the bone by heavy monsoon rains, and gawking at breath-taking scenery; made it a journey of epic proportions! The result is the book, THAILAND 180º. Later, they traveled extensively through Myanmar, Malaysia, and India, gathering a massive collection of 180º photos. They currently live in Chiang Mai where they continue to blog and are now working on a CHIANG MAI 180º book.

The word spectacular is here for that first fisheye photo! You made me so worried as i read to the last, been visualizing the cliffs and the trucks on the other side, and then puff! My worry is that you might fall off the cliff….oh you got me there!

Thanks Andrea! I had more fun writing about this than experiencing it. That road is as beautiful as it is scary. I have another story that I’ll be posting soon.
