Talay Noi Wetlands Preserve, Phattalung, Thailand
The Talay Noi Wetlands Preserve, in Phattalung, at 450 square kilometers, is the largest waterfowl reserve in the Kingdom, and home to 187 species of birds. We decided to book a boat ride at sunrise to explore this vast area. I had envisioned the ball of the sun just breaking over the horizon, back-lighting lotus flowers, but the park didn’t open until 6:30 am.

(ขอเรียกสั้นๆ ว่า “ทะเลน้อย”) บนเนื้อที่กว่า ๒ แสนไร่ ที่มีความหลากหลายทางชีวภาพสูง จนได้เป็นพื้นที่ชุมน้ำโลกแห่งแรกของไทย เราตื่นแต่เช้ามืดหวังจะได้ภาพพระอาทิตย์ขึ้นริมขอบฟ้า สาดทอแสงมายังดอกบัว … แต่ปรากฏว่าอุทยานฯ เปิดให้ออกเรือเวลา ๖.๓๐ น.
Our guide showed up at 6:29 the next morning and I was raring to go. Once we were seated in the boat, our guide busied himself rearranging his gear in the boat, as the first morning light broke the sky. “COME ON”, I shouted in my politest voice, causing a nearby flock of birds to take to the sky. But no, we had to wait for a man to come photograph us and copy our IDs. Twenty minutes later we were finally on our way. We headed to the area with the most lotus blossoms, but I saw that there were clouds on the horizon and my heart sank. I made the photo below, as well as many others, but I just couldn’t find anything special. There were large beautiful birds in every direction I looked, but a fisheye lens is not really suited to bird photography and I started to think the birds were taunting me. After an hour and a half passed, the sun was “Too high”, so we headed back.
คนขับเรือนำเที่ยวของเรามาถึงก่อนเวลานิดนึง เรารีบลงเรือขณะที่คนขับเรือนำเที่ยวก็เตรียมเรือ ผมตะโกนบอกให้ไวๆ … แต่… ยังออกเรือไม่ได้เพราะเจ้าหน้าที่อุทยานต้องเก็บรายละเอียดของผู้มาล่องเรือพร้อมถ่ายรูปเราก่อนเรือออก เฮ้อ.. ๖.๔๐ เข้าไปล่ะ เรือถึงได้ออกจากท่า มุ่งหน้าไปเยือนบัวล้านดอก เห็นนกเป็นล้านตัว แต่ไม่ได้ภาพถูกใจซักภากเลย ที่นี่สวยมากจริงๆ แต่ยังไม่ได้ภาพที่เหมาะกับเลนส์ฟิชอายนี้เลย ชั่วโมงครึ่งผ่านไปเราจึงมุ่งหน้ากลับ

Once on shore I started making arrangements for an evening sunset tour, when my wife grabbed my arm and said, “Look at that!” I looked behind me and saw the scene I captured in the bottom photograph. We canceled our evening tour and continued onward, exploring the culturally unique south of Thailand.

October through March is the usually best time to study the flora and fauna here, when the pink lotus flowers are in full bloom and the birds are plentiful. This year however, the lotuses are blooming later, and the park is having a festival this year from April 10th through the 16th, to promote this important wildlife sanctuary.
