Coins of Thailand, Pt. 1, the 25 Satang
Both of us love to collect coins in every country we visit, and compete to see who has the most different ones at the end of the trip. Of course, after the trip is over we share, and start to study the coins on the internet. Having lived in Thailand, on and off, for over ten years, I was starting to take the Thai coins for granted, and hardly noticed them anymore. Fon was glad to fill me in on some of the details, as she emptied her coin purse on my desk. They came in many different colors, sizes and designs. On the obverse side of every coin was an image of King Bhumibol Adulyadej. The reverse side of the coins had images of famous Thai temples, for the most part, except some special coins that were designed to commemorate special events and celebrations. We realized that we had visited all of the temples on the coins, and decided to compare the artwork on the coins, with the photographs in our THAILAND 180º book, and learn more about the coins.
เราชอบแข่งกันสะสมเหรียญจากการเดินทางไปประเทศต่าง ๆ แล้วก็มาดูว่าใครได้เหรียญแปลกใหม่มามากกว่ากัน จนมองข้ามรายละเอียดเหรียญกษาปณ์ของประเทศไทยไปเพราะเราใช้ทุกวันจนแทบไม่ได้ทันสังเกตว่าเหรียญกษาปณ์ของไทยนี้ก็มีหลากหลายและลงรายละเอียดเยอะมาก ๆ ซึ่งวันหนึ่ง ฝน (ภรรยา) ก็นำเหรียญออกแผ่บนโต๊ะทำงานของเธอแทบหมดกระเป๋า เหรียญกษาปณ์ไทยจะประทับพระบรมรูปของพระมหากษัตริย์ไทยลงบนด้านหน้า ส่วนด้านหลังของเหรียญกษาปณ์ (หมุนเวียน) จะปรากฏเป็นรูปวัดสำคัญในประเทศไทย ซึ่งเราเพิ่งนึกได้ว่าขณะเราเดินทางถ่ายภาพทำหนังสือ THAILAND 180º เราได้ลงพิมพ์ภาพถ่ายของเราในหนังสือนี้ครบทุกวัดที่ปรากฏอยู่บนด้านหลังของ เหรียญกษาปณ์ไทย จึงเริ่มนำภาพมาเทียบกับเหรียญต่าง ๆ
Reverse Side of Thai 25 Satang Coin.
Today, we’ll start with the smallest coin, the 25 Satang. This tiny 16mm in diameter copper colored coin was first minted in 1986. It is composed of both iron and copper, and is worth 1/4 of the Thai Bath, which is worth around .032 American Dollars. The image of the King, was designed by Wuthichai Saengngoen, the image of Wat Phra Mahathat Woro Maha Viharn on the reverse is credited to the Treasury Department. I used low angle cross-lighting and a macro lens to bring out the details of the coin.
… และในวันนี้จึงขอเริ่มนำเสนอจากเหรียญที่เล็กที่สุด คือ “เหรียญ ๒๕ สตางค์” ซึ่งปัจจุบันมีทั้งสีทองเหลืองและสีทองแดง โดยด้านหลังมีรูป “พระบรมธาตุเจดีย์ วัดมหาธาตุวรมหาวิหาร จ.นครศรีธรรมราช” — บอกตรง ๆ ว่า ถ่ายภาพเหรียญนี่ไม่ง่ายเลยนะ เพราะมีร่องรอยการใช้งานทุกเหรียญเลย ต้องหามุมแสงเหมาะ ๆ เพื่อให้เห็นรายละเอียดกันชัด ๆ ว่าผู้ออกแบบเหรียญกษาปณ์ไทยใส่ใจในรายละเอียดขนาดไหน
Our photo in the “THAILAND 180º” book is somewhat similar to the coins design, but it seems the artist took a few liberties in showing the design of this temple, but that’s the advantage of not being restricted by the camera’s eye. This temple is located in Nakhon Si Thammarat and is very famous for a number of reasons that I’ll cover in another blog post. I’ll tease further and say that this image was taken on the same day that the gates of both heaven and hell are open, according to legend, and that along with the clouds and rain, left me with strange feelings that I think show in the photo.
