Monk Bestowing a Blessing with Coins, Flowers and Grain, at a Concrete Buddha Casting Ceremony, Kanchanaburi
Ceremonies for Buddha image castings are lively events, complete with chanting, music, and food. Everyone from the village helps by forming a line to pass the full buckets of concrete to the mold and collect and refill the empty ones. We had to drive past this scene earlier in the day while we were headed to photograph other events, but I vowed to return.
A few hours later, when we returned, the celebration was going strong. At first, I tried to keep my distance, but as usual, I couldn’t resist. I caught the eye of the monk to ask if I could move in and make photographs, and he gave a deep nod of approval and a smile. The next thing we knew, I was in the thick of it making pictures and trying to keep the coins from landing on my lens. The locals soon got used to my presence and I was able to make the above photo. It is one of my favorite celebration photos and reminds me of paintings of the 16th Century painter, Pieter Bruegel.
Photos like this are a prime example of why it took us a year to explore Thailand and make the 450+ photos for our book. You just can’t find these kinds of events on the internet, you really need lots to just drive around, “surfing” the asphalt highway, instead of the web.
