Coins of Thailand, the 10 Baht Coin Pt. 6
As we mentioned in our last post about Thai coins, they come in many different colors, sizes, and designs. On the obverse side of every coin is an image of King Bhumibol Adulyadej. The reverse side of the coins have images of famous Thai temples, for the most part. except some special coins that were designed to commemorate special events and celebrations. After realizing that we had visited all of the temples on the coins, we decided to compare the artwork on the coins, with the photographs in our THAILAND 180º book and learn more about the coins.

Today, we’ll look at the 10 Baht coin. This coin has a diameter of 26 mm, and is bi-metallic, with an outer ring that is made of Cupronickel, and a center made of Aluminium Bronze. It was first minted in1988 and although the obverse side was changed in 2008, to an updated portrait of the King, the reverse side has been changed many times, as this coin has been minted as a commemorative coin on many occasions. The image on the obverse side of King Bhumibol Adulyadej was designed by Supab Aun-aree, and the reverse side features a sculpture of Wat Arun Ratchawararam Ratchwawora Mahavihara, which was designed by Paithoon Na Chiangmai. Ten Baht is approximately equal to .32 U.S. Dollars. One more striking feature of this coin is the raised Braille dots at the twelve o’clock position, that corresponds to the number 10.
วันนี้ นำเสนอเหรียญกษาปณ์โลหะสองสี ชนิดราคา ๑๐ บาท มีขนาดเส้นผ่านศูนย์กลาง ๒๖ มิลลิเมตร ประกาศใช้เมื่อวันที่ ๑๓ กันยายน ๒๕๓๑ ด้านหน้ากลางเหรียญวงในส่วนโลหะสีทอง มีพระบรมรูปพระบาทสมเด็จพระปรมินทรมหาภูมิพลอดุลยเดช ผินพระพักตร์ทางเบื้องขวา ทรงเครื่องบรมขัตติยราชภูษิตาภรณ์ ทรงฉลองพระองค์ครุย วงนอกส่วนโลหะสีขาวด้านซ้ายมีข้อความว่า “ภูมิพลอดุลยเดช” ด้านขวามีข้อความว่า “รัชกาลที่ ๙” และด้านหลังวงในส่วนโลหะสีทอง มีรูปพระปรางค์วัดอรุณราชวรารามราชวรมหาวิหาร วงนอกส่วนโลหะสีขาวด้านซ้ายมีข้อความว่า “ประเทศไทย” ด้านขวามีเลขปี พ.ศ. ที่จัดทำเหรียญ เบื้องล่างมีข้อความว่า “๑๐ บาท 10” และเบื้องบนมีอักษรเบรลล์บอกราคาเหรียญอีกด้วย
I remember my first day in Thailand and my first ride down the Chao Phraya River, where I caught my first glimpse of Wat Arun or Temple of the Dawn. There it was on the Thonburi side of the river with its prangs in quincunx design (one spire in each corner and one in the center), shining in pearly iridescence. This temple gets its name from the Hindu god Aruna, whose chariot is often depicted as the rising sun. This temple dates back to the seventeenth century, but its main prang was built early in the nineteenth century. Our photo is from farther away and shows more of the river, and Wang Derm, the palace of King Taksin.
