Fruits of Southeast Asia, Pt. 2 : Dragon Fruit (Pitaya)

Some of the tastiest tropical fruits are starting to appear in the markets, which means that the season is almost upon us. Many of these fruits are available worldwide now, in a can or maybe fresh in Asian markets of large cities. The orchards in the east of Thailand in the provinces of Rayong and Chanthaburi have a great deal, where for a flat rate you can pick all you can eat. Personally, I think they will cancel this outstanding bargain if I ever get a chance to visit smile emoticon This week, we’ll take a look at some of the fruit shown in our 180º books.

Dragon Fruit Plant

Dragon fruit or pitaya is the strangest fruit that you’ll ever meet and/or eat.  It grows on a cactus, that is an air plant, from a blossom that blooms at night and is wilted by the next morning.  Although it’s home is in the jungles of South America, it is very common in Thailand and other Southeast Asian countries.  I think it’s easy to see how it gets its name when you see it’s hot pink colored fruit at the end of a long, green serpent-like plant.

วันนี้นำเสนอ “แก้วมังกร” ซึ่งเป็นวงศ์เดียวกับตะบองเพชร  มีพื้นเพดั้งเดิมอยู่ในทวีปอเมริกากลางจนถึงอเมริกาใต้   แก้วมังกรเป็นไม้เลื้อย มีรากทั้งในดินและรากอากาศ   สีของเปลือกผลเมื่อดิบเป็นสีเขียว เมื่อสุกเป็นมีสีแดงม่วงหรือสีบานเย็น มีกลีบเลี้ยงสีเขียวติดอยู่รอบผล  ดูๆ แล้วก็นึกถึงดราก้อนบอลเนอะ อิๆ

Okay, so what if the taste is very mild and not very exciting; it’s juiciness and crunch from all those small black seeds make up for this!  The season for this fruit has changed recently, due to climate change, and now the dragon plant blooms as early as April and yields fruit throughout the rainy season in Thailand, and into October.  Most of the time, you’ll find these plants growing from a motorcycle tire that has been affixed atop a pole.

เขาว่ากันว่าแก้วมังกรเป็นหนึ่งในซุปเปอร์ฟู้ดเลยนะ  เป็นผลไม้เพื่อสุขภาพ หลากสรรพคุณ  อุดมด้วยสารอาหารมากมาย   เนื้อของผลแก้วมังกรมีทั้งสีขาวและสีแดงหรือชมพูขึ้นอยู่กับสายพันธุ์  โดยในเนื้อมีเมล็ดสีดำเล็กคล้าย ๆ เมล็ดงาหรือเมล็ดแมงลักกระจายอยู่ทั่วเนื้อ   มีรสหวานและเนื้อกรอบ  ต้นแก้วมังกรให้ผลตั้งแต่พฤษภาคมถึงตุลาคม  หนึ่งในภูมิปัญญาการเพาะปลูกคือการใช้เสาปูนและลวดมัดยางรถให้แน่นหนาแข็งแรงเป็นการทำค้างให้แก้วมังกรเลื้อยอาศัย

Dragon Fruit Inspired Cabin at Banphasawan Resort

Above is the Dragon Fruit cabin at the Ban Pha Sawan Resort in Kanchanaburi, Thailand.  This is one of those places that we’ve always wanted to stay at.  The grounds are beautiful and the fruit theme cabins are very unique.  This is also where we saw our first Hornbill that we’ve shared before on this blog.
