A Glorious Thai Roadside Fruit Stand, as seen in the book, THAILAND 180º

The jackfruit, known in Thailand as “Kanoon”, which originates from Kerala, India, combines the taste of several of my favorite fruits, all rolled up in one.  For me, the tastes of this fruit include peach, banana, and apple.  But this is crazy talk, like saying that voles taste like chicken; you have to taste it, not read words.  Weighing up to 80 lb, this is the largest fruit that grows on trees, and the sight of a tree full of ripe fruit is a sight to behold.  We had to include a picture of this in our THAILAND 180º book!

ขนุน  เป็นไม้ยืนต้นขนาดใหญ่  มีถิ่นกำเนิดในเอเชียใต้และแพร่หลายมายังเอเชียตะวันออกเฉียงใต้และได้รับความนิยมมากในคาบสมุทรมลายู  เมื่อสุกมีกลิ่นหอมรสหวาน

Jackfruit Growing on a Tree

All over Asia, vendors can be seen performing the rather intense labor of separating the large seeds and light yellow flesh, from its giant green nubby shell.  Jackfruit is also a star ingredient in desserts and used before it is ripened in various dishes.  The seeds are also edible and are said to have a meat-like taste, which makes them suitable for curry dishes.  When the tree is older, the wood is excellent for carving statues of deities or furniture.  (Note to self: Plant a jackfruit tree!)

ขนุนบ้านเราหาทานได้ไม่ยาก  รับประทานผลสด และใช้ทำขนมได้หลายชนิด เช่น ใส่ในไอศกรีม ลอดช่องสิงคโปร์ รวมมิตร หรือรับประทานกับข้าวเหนียวมูนก็ได้   นอกจากรสชาติหอมหวานของผลไม้แล้ว  ขนุนยังเป็นไม้มงคล ที่นิยมปลูกไว้ในบริเวณบ้านเพื่อเสริมความหนุนนำส่งเสริมดวงชะตาของผู้อยู่อาศัย  ตลอดจนมีการแปรรูปไม้ขนุนต้นแก่มาเป็นเฟอร์นิเจอร์ใช้สอย เครื่องดนตรีไทย และรูปแกะสลักต่างๆ

The fruit is now available fresh in the Asian markets in some Western countries, as well as in cans packed in heavy syrup, and died in bags, like potato chips.  I must say that the fresh fruit has a totally different taste, but I love the taste so much that I’ll settle for any form if I have to go without for long enough.

If you’ve tried any dishes cooked with jackfruit, especially the seeds, please tell us about them in the comments below.  Update March 30, 2016: Yesterday our neighbor, Aunty Dang brought us some homemade Gang Kanoon!  She says that this is the season for this dish, especially around Thai New Years, which is celebrated next month.  I could still taste the wonderful jackfruit flavor along with some chilies, garlic, tomatoes and secret herbs added in.
