Our 180Books/Naresuan Connection: The Kanbawzathadi Palace in Myanmar

The Thais are all going crazy over the release of the fifth movie in the Legend of King Naresuan series.  These are excellent Thai biographical historical drama films about King Naresuan the Great, who ruled Siam from 1590 until his death in 1605.  All of the films have been directed by Prince Chatrichalerm Yukol and have been extremely popular.  In the west, the movies were released under the title Kingdom of War.  As my wife and I discussed the story, we realized that we had visited the palace in Myanmar, shown in the series.  It was in the first movie, which revealed  how King Naresuan and his sister, Princess Suphankalya were taken as hostages, after the Burmese conquered the Kingdom of Ayutthaya, in order to avoid retaliation.  But the Burmese King Bayinnaung was so impressed with the wisdom of the boy, that he adopted him and provided him with a thorough education.  Later, King Bayinnaung feel in love with Princess Suphanklya, and she became a royal consort.

This is the throne hall at the Kanbawzathadi Palace (above), it was originally  built by King Bayinnaung in 1556, but it burned to the ground in 1599.  By the time the Department of Archaeology in Myanmar excavated the palace site in 1993, its remains had been reduced to mounds of dirt.

With loving care, the palace and surrounding compound were rebuilt to its 16th Century splendor, with intricate, gilded wood carvings and towering teak columns.  This would have been open-air of course, as the windows are modern embellishments.  I’d like to draw your attention to the throne at the center of the image, this was known as the Beehive Throne, due to of the shape of the base.  This is the area of the palace compound where people waited to see the king. “พระราชวังกัมโพชธานี” แห่งเมืองหงสาวดี ของพระเจ้าบุเรงนอง สร้างขึ้นในปีพ.ศ.๒๐๙๙ โดยใช้แรงงานจากประเทศราช เดิมอาณาบริเวณของพระราชวังกัมโพชธานีมีซุ้มประตู ๒๐ ประตู และอาคารต่างๆ มากถึง ๗๖ หลัง รวมทั้งพระตำหนักของพระสุพรรณกัลยาอีกด้วย  ซึ่งพระเจ้าบุเรงนองยกทัพตีเมืองพิษณุโลก สมัยสงครามช้างเผือก  สมเด็จพระมหาธรรมราชาธิราช เจ้าเมืองพิษณุโลก ยอมอ่อนน้อมต่อหงสาวดีจึงทำให้เมืองพิษณุโลกต้องเป็นเมืองประเทศราชของเมืองหงสาวดีและไม่ขึ้นต่อกรุงศรีอยุธยา  พระเจ้าบุเรงนองทรงขอสมเด็จพระนเรศวรไปเป็นองค์ประกันที่หงสาวดีในปีพ.ศ. ๒๑๐๗   แต่ทั้งหมดถูกเผาทำลายสิ้นหลังจากพระเจ้าบุเรงนองสวรรคต

ต่อมาทางรัฐบาลพม่าจึงได้ทำการขุดค้นและสร้างพระราชวังบุเรงนองขึ้นมาใหม่แล้วเสร็จส่วนหนึ่ง  ประกอบด้วย “ท้องพระโรงราชสิงห์” Thihathana Throne (Royal Lion Throne)  และ “พระตำหนักภุมรินทร์” Bhammayarthana Throne (Bee Throne)

The photo above shows where the king would have waited, before the grand moment when music would play and he would walk up the steps, through the open gilded doors, and take his place on the Beehive Throne.  The wall treatment is also quite interesting…

Above, you can see a beautiful example of Burmese craftsmanship, using carved wood with inlaid mirror fragments. This would have filled the room with shards of light from candles or sunlight filtering through the vents near the ceiling of the chamber.  This palace is located in Bago is a very scenic city and only fifty miles from Yangon, making it a must-do day trip.
