The Making of a Candle Float for the Ubon Ratchathani Candle Festival

 

After posting our blog last Tuesday, there were a few questions about the construction of the floats. We love comments and questions! Let’s take a peek inside a few studios where floats are being created, and learn more about this craft.

 

คราวก่อนเราโพสต์ถึงขบวนแห่เทียนพรรษาอันวิจิตรตระการตาจนเป็นที่สนใจจากเพื่อนๆ ต่างชาติมากมาย  วันนี้จะขอบรรยายคร่าวๆ เกี่ยวกับการประดิษฐ์เทียนพรรษา

 

 

Here we see the beginning of the construction, where a frame is made, and these various frames are attached to large flatbed trailers. Wood, and wire mesh, dried vegetation such as rice husks, are attached to the framework to add contours to the shapes.

 

หลังจากช่างผู้มีประสบการณ์และความชำนาญได้ออกแบบและถอดลายแล้ว จะเริ่มลงมือทำโครงสร้างก่อน ซึ่งส่วนมากใช้วัสดุจากธรรมชาติ เช่น แผ่นไม้กระดาน ไม้ไผ่ ฟาง กาบมะพร้าว และใช้ลวดประกอบกับปูนปลาสเตอร์เพื่อขึ้นรูปร่าง โดยการออกแบบนี้เน้นโครงเรื่องในพระพุทธศาสนาและสัตว์ป่าหิมพานต์มาผสมผสานศิลปะแบบไทย

 

 

Plaster is applied over the framework and shaped further with hands and tools.

 

 

Hot wax is then poured over the framework and plaster. This is further shaped and smoothened, using tools, heat guns, and red-hot tools, as seen in our previous blog.  At this point, the wax may be carved or tiles of molded wax shapes applied.

 

หลังจากขึ้นรูปร่างแล้ว ก็ใช้ขี้ผึ้งเคลือบทับ ปั้น แต่งให้เข้ารูปทรง  ซึ่งภาพส่วนหนึ่งได้โพสต์ไปใบบล๊อกก่อนหน้านี้

 

 

While one part of the team is working on the frame, many others are molding wax tiles, cleaning, and sorting these according to shape and size.

 

การประดิษฐ์ต้นเทียนและขบวนรถแห่เทียนนี้เน้นการทำงานเป็นทีม  เนื่องจากการทำต้นเทียนพรรษาเป็นงานที่ละเอียด ใช้เวลานาน และใช้ความอุตสาหะอย่างมาก   อีกทั้งการติดประดับเทียนที่แกะสลักหรือดอกผึ้งแบบติดพิมพ์ต้องคำนวณจำนวนของชิ้นเทียนให้ดี กำหนดแบ่งตารางเวลาในแต่ละขั้นตอนเพื่อให้เสร็จสมบูรณ์สวยงามทันเข้าร่วมการประกวด

 

 

Almost everyone in the community is involved in the making of the floats. Here a monk adds wax tiles to a wax covered frame.

 

การประดิษฐ์ต้นเทียนและขบวนรถแห่เทียนเป็นส่วนหนึ่งในการส่งเสริมการมีส่วนร่วมของสมาชิกในชุมชนได้เป็นอย่างดี แม้แต่พระ เณร และแม่ชี ก็มาร่วมด้วยช่วยกัน

 

 

Here we see the Thai/Hindu mythological creature float, that we saw when it was just a frame at the beginning of this article.

 

นอกจากเค้าโครงเรื่องราวในพระพุทธศาสนาแล้ว  ยังมีการประดิษฐ์เทียนเป็นรูปสัตว์ป่าหิมพานต์มาประดับอีกด้วย

 

 

If you were wondering how one keeps a float covered in wax from melting under Thailand’s hot tropical sun, here’s your answer!  As the parade progresses and the sun starts to make everyone drip sweat, members of the team take turns escorting the float and spraying it with cold water.

 

ระหว่างการเคลื่อนขบวนรถแห่เทียนนี้  จำเป็นต้องมีทีมงานเดินตามขบวนเพื่อฉีดน้ำเย็นเลี้ยงไว้ไม่ให้ขี้ผึ้งละลาย  โดยเฉพาะประเภทเทียนติดพิมพ์ (อย่างที่เห็นในภาพข้างบนนี้)

 

We really had fun, made some friends and added real value to this whole experience by meeting some of the team members and watch their float transform. If you can plan to arrive at this festival several days early, and hire a local driver or tour guide. You won’t be disappointed.

 

ช่างเป็นประเพณีที่งดงามและสื่อให้เราได้เห็นได้สัมผัสได้ซึมทราบอะไรหลายๆ อย่างที่นอกเหนือจากการได่้มาเที่ยวชมเพลิดเพลินไปกับความอลังการตระการตาแล้ว  ยังได้สัมผัสทั้งความมีมิตรไมตรี  ความร่วมมือร่วมแรงร่วมใจ  โดยเฉพาะแขกผู้มาเยือนอย่างเราและท่านอื่นๆ ก็สามารถเข้าไปมีส่วนร่วมในการประดิษฐ์เทียนได้ และได้บุญด้วย … ไปเยือนไปยลเมืองอุบลกันสักครั้ง รับรองได้ว่าไม่ผิดหวังจริงๆ.
