Ramadan is an excellent time to visit Penang, Malaysia!

 

 

It was still pitch-dark outside, when the first morning Azan, a Muslim call to prayer, blasted through our hotel room.  The voice was crackly and old and the speakers were amplified to ear-splitting levels.  So began our first morning in Penang, Malaysia, of our one-week getaway.  After our heartbeats returned to normal, we discussed what had just happened.  We understood that the call was not meant to entertain and had a purpose for the majority Muslim population.  It seems that when we checked into our room, we had failed to notice that it was surrounded by many mosques and plenty of giant horn speakers.

 

เสียงอาซานเรียกสู่การละหมาดดังลอดประตูและหน้าต่างห้องในโรงแรมเข้ามาปลุกเราตื่นแต่เช้ามืดวันแรกของการไปเยือนเกาะปีนัง ประเทศมาเลเซีย   พอเสียงอาซานสงบลงเราหันมาคุยกันและเข้าใจว่าเสียงอาซานแหบพล่านั้นไม่ได้เพื่อความบันเทิงใดๆ แต่เพื่อประกาศเชิญชาวมุสลิมปฏิบัติศาสนกิจ  ซึ่งเราลืมไปว่าประชากรส่วนใหญ่ของประเทศมาเลเซียนับถือศาสนาอิสลาม แม้แต่บนเกาะปีนังที่มีชาวจีนอพยพมาตั้งถิ่นฐานอยู่แต่นมนานแล้วก็ตาม  ซึ่งตอนเรามาถึงและเช็คอินก็ไม่ทันได้สังเกตเลยว่ามีมัสยิดมากมายล้อมรอบโรงแรมและโทรโข่งขยายเสียงติดอยู่บนสุเหร่ามัสยิดทุกแห่ง

 

Since we were up, we decided to begin the day and after a quick shower, we set out to explore Georgetown’s historical area.  Nothing seemed to be open and there were few cars on the road.  We headed for the Little India section of town, only to find most of the restaurants were closed.  We were aware that it was Ramadan, a month-long Muslim holiday when devotees fast from sunrise to sunset, and we had planned to spend time making photographs during this period, but we hadn’t really thought about the ramifications.

 

ไหนๆ ก็ตื่นแล้ว เราเลยอาบน้ำแต่งตัวออกไปเดินเที่ยวกันแต่เช้าในย่านเมืองมรดกโลก ซึ่งก็คือเมืองจอร์จทาวน์ เมืองหลวงของรัฐปีนัง  เช้าขนาดนี้ยังไม่มีใครเปิดบ้านเปิดร้านค้ากันเลย  ถนนโล่งมาก  เราเดินไปลิตเติ้ลอินเดียแต่ก็ยังไม่มีใครเปิดร้านเช่นกัน  แล้วเราก็เพิ่งนึกได้ว่านี่เป็นเดือนรอมฎอน ซึ่งเดิมเราวางแผนมาเยือนปีนังธรรมดาๆ แล้วก็ไม่เคยคิดว่าการมาเยือนนี้จะเป็นการเดินทางเพื่อเก็บภาพกิจกรรมต่างๆ ที่แตกกิ่งก้านสาขาออกไปอีกมากมาย

 

 

We headed towards the old market area and found many Chinese restaurants serving food, and settled down for a delicious meal.  As we were finishing, we started talking to some of the tourists around us.  “Wait until this evening at sundown!” an excited British couple teased.  “They set up the Ramadan Food Bazaar on Queen in the evening, with the best Indian and Malay food you’ve ever tasted!”.  About that time, their food came, and we excused ourselves to get back to exploring.

 

เราเดินไปยังย่านตลาดเก่า ซึ่งเริ่มมีกิจกรรมต่างๆ เกิดขึ้น  ทั้งร้านค้าและร้านอาหารของชาวจีนเริ่มเปิดให้บริการ  เราเลยแวะเข้าไปทานอาหารเช้าในร้านอาหารจีนร้านนี้ ติ่มซำอร่อยมากๆ   หลังจากทานเสร็จก็ได้พูดคุยกับนักท่องเที่ยวชาวอังกฤษคู่หนึ่ง  พวกเขาบอกเราว่ารอให้ถึงช่วงพระอาทิตย์ตกดินก่อน เขามีมหกรรมอาหารบนถนนควีนที่เราจะได้ลิ้มรสอาหารอินเดียและมาเลย์รสเลิศ  หลังจากทานและคุยเสร็จเราก็ออกเดินเที่ยวเก็บภาพของเราต่อ

 

 

By this time, the early morning prayer session was over, so we headed to the Floating Mosque, which was empty, except for a friendly caretaker.  Although he didn’t speak much English, by using smiles and gestures, I got permission to make photographs inside the mosque.  He ran off to a dark corner, and a large chandelier in the middle of the room, burst forth with life, following the clicking sounds of many switches.

 

เรานั่งรถไปถึงมัสยิดลอยน้ำ หลังการละหมาดและผู้คนกลับหมดแล้ว  มีแต่ผู้ดูแลที่พูดภาษาอังกฤษพอได้ อนุญาตให้เราเข้าไป เขายืนยิ้มกว้างและเดินไปเปิดไฟให้เราได้ถ่ายภาพภายในมัสยิด

 

 

The Floating Mosque, or Tanjung Bungah Floating Mosque, was built in 2004, to replace the old mosque that was damaged by the deadly tsunami disaster of that same year. It’s not actually floating, but rather built on pillars and stilts, it is nonetheless, a stunning architectural accomplishment. The seven-story-high minaret allows for a 360º panoramic view of the sea and coastal area of Tanjung Bungah. The total mosque covers an area of 1,295 square meters and can hold 1,500 worshipers.  In addition to the beauty of this mosque, there are many excellent views of Georgetown, which makes a good background.

 

มัสยิดลอยน้ำ ตามรูปด้านบนนั้นได้ถูกสร้างขึ้นใหม่เมื่อปี พ.ศ. ๒๕๔๗ แทนที่มัสยิดเดิมที่ถูกคลื่นซึนามิซัดพังเสียหาย  ความจริงนั้นมัสยิดไม่ได้ลอยบนน้ำแต่สร้างแบบมีเสามีคานรับและยื่นไปในอ่าวซึ่งเวลาน้ำขึ้นจะเสมือนลอยอยู่บนคลื่นทะเล  มีหอคอยสุเหร่าสูงมากและสามารถเห็นวิวแบบ 360º  มัสยิดแห่งนี้มีห้องโถงละหมาดที่มีความจุถึง ๑,๕๐๐ คน

 

 

We spent most of the day riding around the city, stopping to make notes on which subjects needed to be photographed at which time, and familiarized ourselves with the city, until evening.  Finally, as the sun was setting, we started walking towards Queen Street, as the sidewalks became full of Muslims, dressed in traditional Indian Malay clothing.  Everyone was smiling and the atmosphere was very friendly and festive.  The food bazaar was everything that had been promised and more!  I was in a picture taking frenzy and people were calling us to photograph them from all directions.

 

นั่งรถบ้าง เดินบ้าง หยุดเพื่อจดบันทึกบ้าง พักบ้าง ชมวิวและซึมซับสิ่งที่อยู่รอบๆ ตัว  จนพลบค่ำเราจึงไปที่ถนนควีนซึ่งอยู่ในลิตเติ้ลอินเดีย  ตอนนี้คราคร่ำไปด้วยร้านค้า ร้านอาหาร และผู้คนทั้งชาวมุสลิมและอินเดีย  ทุกคนดูยิ้มแย้มแจ่มใส รื่นเริงและมีมิตรไมตรีมาก   งานมหกรรมอาหารบนถนนควีนนี้ยอดเยี่ยมเกินกว่าที่นักท่องเที่ยวคู่นั้นบอกเราเมื่อเช้านี้ซะอีก  ถ่ายรูปกันเพลินเลย หลายร้านต่างตะโกนควักมือเรียกเราเข้าไปถ่ายรูปอาหารที่เขาภาคภูมิใจนำเสนอ  ที่นี่มีอาหารหลากหลายให้เลือก น่าทานมากๆ หอมชวนหิวเลย  ผมถ่ายรูปและฝนก็จดบันทึกชื่ออาหารและแลกอีเมลล์กันจนเต็มสมุดไปหมดเลย

 

 

The cooks and food servers were full of personality and there were all kinds of food that I had never seen before.  The locals were giving us samples as well as the chefs and soon we had several bags full of delicacies, and Fon’s notebook was covered with names of the food, and e-mail addresses of the people we photographed.

 

 

Later as we walked back to our hotel, we decided not to move to a different one, and embrace the brief but loud morning prayer call, as part of our Penang experience.  Speaking of which, many travel websites may tell you not to travel to a Muslim country during Ramadan, or you might find it difficult to find food.  This is definitely not the case in Penang, where there is also a large Chinese population on the island, whose life goes on unchanged during this time.  I also had read some comments about some resentment towards tourists, that mistake the Ramadan Bazaar feast for the holiday itself, but we experienced only kindness.  Of course, we didn’t eat in public near the mosques during the fasting hours, which really isn’t too difficult to manage, and I was even able to buy beer from some markets,  which is almost a must for me with spicy food.

 

พอกลับมาถึงโรงแรมก็เมื่อยมาก และตัดสินใจไม่เปลี่ยนโรงแรม เพราะเสียงอาซานนั้นเป็นส่วนหนึ่งของประสบการณ์ ความทรงจำ ทั้งยังเป็นส่วนหนึ่งของปีนังด้วย   เราเคยได้ทราบข้อมูลจากบางเว็บท่องเที่ยวว่าหลีกเลี่ยงการเดินทางไปประเทศที่มีประชากรส่วนใหญ่เป็นชาวมุสลิมในช่วงเดือนรอมฎอน เพราะมักจะหาอาหารทานยาก! … ไม่นะ ไม่ใช่ที่นี่แน่นอนครับผมยืนยัน  แต่ก็ไม่ได้หมายความว่าเทศกาลเดือนรอมฎอนเป็นเทศกาลอาหารอย่างที่หลายคนเข้าใจผิดนะครับ   บนเกาะปีนังนี้มีชาวจีนอาศัยอยู่มากและวิถีชีวิตพวกเขาก็ไม่ได้เปลี่ยนแปลงไปแม้เมื่อมาอาศัยอยู่ในประเทศที่มีประชากรส่วนใหญ่เป็นชาวมุสลิม  อาหารการกินและเครื่องดื่มแอลกอฮอล์ต่างๆ ก็มีขายตามปกติ เพียงแต่เราต้องให้ความเคารพด้วยการไม่ไปรับประทานอาหารหรือดื่มเครื่องดื่มแอลกอฮอล์แบบโจ่งแจ้งใกล้ๆ หรือในศาสนสถานครับ

 

 

After a week, we headed back to Bangkok, as we knew that Penang would make an exciting book, and that takes lots of planning, but we both agreed that we should come back before the end of Ramadan, for more.
