It’s Raining! Grab Your Camera and Hurry to the Ruins! (Part 1)

This is the best time of year to make photographs in Thailand if not all of Asia. During this season, everything has so much more texture and color than any other time of year. One hour the sky is cobalt blue with big puffy clouds; the next minute it is gray and raining. This rain also clears the dust, brings out the color of the stones, and helps promote a photogenic carpet of green moss or algae. While the fast changing weather adds a lot of stress to our photo-safaris, it sometimes results in a moment when the light is magical.

ฤดูฝนเป็นช่วง low season ทำให้ราคาที่พักไม่แพง เที่ยวแบบประหยัดไปในตัว แถมอากาศชุ่มชื่น แดดไม่ร้อน นักท่องเที่ยวไม่เยอะ แล้วก็ได้ภาพงามๆ อีกต่างหาก เพราะความชุ่มชื้นจากสายฝนทำให้สีของโบราณสถานมีความเข้มชัด ท้องฟ้ามีเกล็ดและกลุ่มเมฆฝน ต้นไม้ใบหญ้าเขียวขจี ดูไม่แห้งแล้งเหมือนฤดูกาลอื่น ให้อารมณ์หลากหลายดีมาก แค่เราแต่งตัวเก๋ๆ สไตล์อินเดียน่าโจนส์, ทูมเรเดอร์, หรือชิคแอนด์ชิลล์ เสื้อผ้า-หน้า-ผม จัดกันไปให้พร้อมเลย ได้เซลฟี่แบบไม่มีใครแย่งที่เรายืน
Early in the season is the best time. A couple of months later, many of the stone steps will have a slippery coating of algae on them. That’s how I slipped and shattered my ankle! Well, I was rushing around like an excited madman! It’s also a good idea to hire a local guide that knows the roads and landmarks, as well as detours and short cuts. Now that I’ve almost convinced you, lets look at some spectacular sites near Bangkok.

Just over an hours drive north of Bangkok is the city of Ayutthaya. This city flourished from 1350 when it was founded by King Ramathibodi I, until it was sacked by the Burmese Army in 1767. In between these years, it served as the country’s capital and was one of the wealthiest cities in Asia. During this time, the kingdom’s territory was huge and included all of modern Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, and southern Myanmar. A total of 34 kings ruled during this time period and attacks from the Cambodians and Burmese armies were commonplace. In 1767 after a disease outbreak, a devastating fire and a brutal attack from their neighbors, the Burmese, the city fell. The golden spires were melted down exposing the concrete skeletons that dot the city today. The heads and the various body parts of the Buddha images lay in piles at some of the temples, while the rest were plundered by “collectors” over the years. Dates usually don’t stay in my head for very long, but the fall of Ayutthaya in 1767 is so close the American Revolution in 1776, and the French Revolution in 1789, that I find it interesting to compare the situations that were occurring at the same time.

วัดราชบูรณะ วัดราชบูรณะสร้างขึ้นในรัชสมัยของสมเด็จพระบรมราชาธิราชที่ ๒ ในบริเวณพื้นที่และตำแหน่งเดิมที่พระองค์ได้ทรงถวายพระเพลิงศพให้กับเจ้าอ้ายพระยาและเจ้ายี่พระยา พระเชษฐาทั้งสองพระองค์ที่สิ้นพระชนม์ภายหลังจากการกระทำยุทธหัตถีกัน เพื่อแย่งชิงราชสมบัติของสมเด็จพระนครอินทราธิราชพระราชบิดาที่เสด็จสวรรคต ลงในปี พ.ศ. ๑๙๖๗ … ณ บริเวณมุมหนึ่งของวัด มีพระพุทธรูปปรักหักพัง ดูน่าสนใจและมีมนต์ขลังไม่น้อย

If you look carefully, as you approach Ayutthaya you’ll see the top of a chedi (a reliquary monument), just as you enter the province. This is the chedi that King Naresuan had built to commemorate one of his victories. It is located in the compound of Wat Yai Chaimongkol, which was built by King U-thong around 1357 A.D. The temple was built as a monastery that stressed the importance of meditation, and this is reflected in the beautiful and peaceful layout of the temple grounds. If you’re not too acrophobic, you can climb the small steep steps to the top of the chedi for a picture. If you look to the right in the photograph above, you can see a storm approaching from the right. This storm only lasted 10 minutes, but it surprised us by moving in quickly and totally soaking us!

Ayutthaya is a great city to tour by bike if you’re not in a hurry like we always are. Early in the morning when the sun is low and the light is spectacular, is no time to be dawdling! If we find an angle that we like, but the weather conditions are wrong for a shot, we’ll mark it on the map and rush back later when they’re better. Some temples ruins, such as Wat Phra Si Sanphet, I’ve photographed over and over for nearly 20 years. I used to get such a melancholy feeling when I was around this temple that I only photographed in black and white. This time, I had similar feelings, but since THAILAND 180º is a book of color photographs, I had to find the right angle at the right time of day to convey these feelings. After trying some of the older angles, I saw a few white blossoms, that had fallen from a tree, into a formation on the brick wall. I saw that their arrangement mirrored the chedi layout in front of me, and made the photograph without changing anything. I like the contrast of the green leaves and grass, with the blue sky and clouds; against the well-aged chedi.
The three chedis all had to be in the same photo, in order to tell the whole story: While King Ramathibodi II constructed two chedis; one to house the remains of his father (King Borom Trai Lokanat) and one for his brother (King Borommarachathirat III), the third chedi was built by King Borommarachathirat IV for the remains of his father, King Ramathibodi II.
I was surprised as Fon and I discussed how much we enjoy this kind of thing, but how many people find them very boring. Many countries, especially in Asia are attempting to create new tourist attractions with gaudy design, and utter tackiness. She believes that most young Asians find the ruins and more traditional attractions irrelevant to their modern life, and would rather be the first to tweet a selfie at a new tourist trap than visit a place that perhaps requires a little bit of study to appreciate fully. Well, I have to confess that we’ve brought costumes to these locations to photograph ourselves in and had fun since we have these spectacular locations to ourselves during this season!
