Exploring the Bang Pa-In Summer Palace in Ayutthaya, Thailand : พระราชวังบางปะอิน

While we were in the province of Ayutthaya, we decided to visit a summer palace. If you’re like me, you’re probably picturing a bunch of musty old buildings with almost every interesting area roped off, and “No Photos!” signs everywhere. No, Bang Pa-In is much different. This is a good place to spend a lot of time relaxing under shade trees, exploring the well-landscaped grounds, or tearing around in a golf cart while sounding a horn that plays Vivaldi music clips. Have you ever tried to clear the path of loud-talking, slow-moving cell phone users with Baroque music? Here’s your chance!
Seriously, the rental golf carts are a perfect way to see Bang Pa-In’s sprawling grounds and get familiar with the different buildings and sites. We did this first and noted the places that needed a better sky, or better light. We then spent the next four hours wandering around, making photographs as the cloud formations changed.

The Bang Pa-In Summer Palace was built in the 17th century as a summer palace for the Kings of Ayutthaya (see previous blog post). When the city was sacked in 1767, the palace was abandoned, until King Mongkut started restoring it during his reign. Most of the buildings that adorn the complex today were built by King Chulalongkorn, who spent the summers here with his royal consorts. King Chulalongkorn was well traveled and this is reflected in the many styles of architecture you’ll notice as you look around. Like most palaces, there are areas where royal ceremonies were held, and an inner sanctum, reserved only for the king.
ขอเล่าถึงความเป็นมาคร่าวๆ ก่อน ..พระราชวังบางปะอิน เป็นพระราชวังโบราณตั้งแต่สมัยกรุงศรีอยุธยา สมเด็จพระศรีสรรเพ็ชญ์ที่ ๕ (พระเจ้าปราสาททอง) ได้ทรงพระกรุณาโปรดเกล้าฯ ให้สร้างขึ้นเป็นที่ประทับ และจากนั้นมาพระราชวังบางปะอินจึงเป็นที่ประพาสของพระมหากษัตริย์แห่งกรุงศรีอยุธยาหลายพระองค์ จวบจนพุทธศักราช ๒๓๑๐ พระราชวังบางปะอินจึงได้ถูกทิ้งให้รกร้าง … แต่ด้วยความร่มรื่นของแมกไม้และเป็นเขตพระราชวังเก่า พระบาทสมเด็จพระจอมเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัวจึงทรงพระกรุณาโปรดเกล้าฯ ให้บูรณะและสร้างพระตำหนักขึ้นเป็นการถาวร และต่อมาในรัชสมัยพระบาทสมเด็จพระจุลจอมเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัวทรงพระกรุณาโปรดเกล้าฯ ให้บูรณะและสร้างพระตำหนักและพระที่นั่งเพิ่มเติม
One of the first buildings to catch our eyes was the 30 meter tall, red and yellow striped tower with a dome roof, in the image above. This tower, known as Ho Withun Thasana, was built by King Chulalongkorn in 1881 as a lookout tower, to view wild elephants and rice paddies. It has a mix of several different European styles, and its twelve-sided design keeps the docents busy pronouncing the word “dodecahedral”.
ด้วยพระพุทธเจ้าหลวงทรงเสด็จประพาสยุโรปและเมืองต่างๆในเอเชียอยู่หลายครั้ง จึงสังเกตได้ว่าพระราชวังบางปะอินมีสถาปัตยกรรมผสมผสานระหว่างตะวันออกและตะวันตก เช่น หอวิฑูรทัศนา ใกล้กับพระที่นั่งเวหาศน์จำรูญ (สถาปัตยกรรมจีน) มีความโดดเด่นด้วยเป็นสถาปัตยกรรมผสมผสานของยุโรปและตัวอาคารยอดมน ทาสีเหลืองสลับแดง เพื่อใช้เป็นที่ทอดพระเนตรโขลงช้างป่าและภูมิประเทศโดยรอบพระราชวัง เป็นหอสูง ๓ ชั้น ๑๒ เหลี่ยม มีความสูง ๓๐ เมตร ภายในมีบันไดเวียน ๑๑๒ ขั้น จากการมองเห็นทัศนียภาพที่งดงามได้โดยรอบบนหอวิฑูรทัศนานี้เอง จึงมีคำกล่าว่า “ดูนาที่ไหนเล่า ไม่เท่าที่บางปะอิน” … อาคารสีเหลืองสลับแดงนี้ตัดกับความเขียวขจีได้สวยงามมากๆ จากมุมนี้
Devaraj-Kunlai Gate, Bang Pa-In
There are many moats and canals surrounding the various buildings which offered beauty and protection. The image above shows one of these moats and a long protected walkway, leading to the king’s private area. The structure that resembles a one-story building is actually the Devaraj-Kunlai Gate. Its louvered windows provided privacy while allowing a breeze to pass through. Can you feel the serenity in this picture? This is typical of the Bang Pa-In Summer Palace.
เช่นเดียวกับพระราชวังอื่นๆ พระราชวังบางปะอิน แบ่งเขตพระราชฐานออกเป็น ๒ ส่วน คือ เขตพระราชฐานชั้นนอก และเขตพระราชฐานชั้นใน โดยการสร้างกำแพงล้อมรอบและคลองภายในที่ขุดเชื่อมต่อทั่วถึงกันเป็นตัวแบ่งเขต .. เขตพระราชฐานชั้นใน เชื่อมต่อกับเขตพระราชฐานชั้นนอก ด้วย “ประตูเทวราชครรไล” ลักษณะเป็นอาคารตึกชั้นเดียว โค้งครึ่งวงกลม และมีสะพานเชื่อมข้ามคลอง โดยด้านหนึ่งของสะพานมีฝาบานเฟี้ยมบังตาตลอดแนวสะพาน ใช้เป็นเส้นทางสำหรับผ่านเข้าเขตพระราชฐานชั้นใน ซึ่งเป็นที่ประทับของของพระมหากษัตริย์ สมเด็จพระอัครมเหสี พระบรมวงศานุวงศ์ฝ่ายใน และข้าบาทบริจาริกา
Just a word of caution: This palace is still used for royal ceremonies occasionally and may be closed if one is taking place. It’s best to check the news to make sure that this isn’t the case on the day you plan to visit.
พระราชวังบางปะอินนี้อยู่ในความดูแลของสำนักพระราชวัง และยังใช้เป็นสถานที่แปรพระราชฐานของพระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัวและพระบรมวงศานุวงศ์ เป็นที่ประทับรับรองพระราชอาคันตุกะ และพระราชทานเลี้ยงในโอกาสต่างๆ รวมถึงประกอบพระราชพิธีสังเวยพระป้าย และยังเปิดให้ประชาชนและนักท่องเที่ยวเข้าชม โดยต้องแต่งกายให้สุภาพ เปิดให้เข้าชมทุกวันในเวลาระหว่าง ๐๘.๐๐ – ๑๗.๐๐ น.
