The Vegetarian Festival, in Phuket Thailand

The Vegetarian Festival, known as Tesagan Gin Pak, in Phuket Thailand, had never been on my list of attractions to see. The idea of watching people known locally as Ma Song, perform ritualized mutilations upon themselves by such means as impaling themselves with swords, needles and other pointy things, or walking on hot coals, wrapping themselves with strings of exploding firecrackers, or even climbing a ladder with rungs made of knife blades, totally repulsed me. I knew that this festival HAD to be in our THAILAND 180º book, because it was always a large tourist attraction, and it was a part of Chinese tradition that Chinese-Thais still practice today. What inspires a group of people to do such a thing in the first place?
A long time ago, the Amphoe (District) of Kathu, Phuket, in Thailand was a thriving town comprised mainly of Chinese tin miners. Suddenly, an epidemic spread through the community, causing the local people to ask themselves, why such suffering was happening. The local Chinese opera performers reminded them of the fasting and purification festival that they used to perform in honor of gods “Kiu Ong”, which means the Nine Heavenly Kings. In the hustle and bustle of their new life in Thailand, they had neglected to worship these gods, as they had in their homeland. The festival was performed in the ninth lunar month of the Chinese calendar, and the people of Kathu regained their health once more. Ever since then, it has been celebrated in many parts of Thailand at the same time, with Kathu having the largest festival in the kingdom.

เทศกาลกินเจ หรือ ประเพณีถือศีลกินผัก เป็นอีกประเพณีหนึ่งที่สืบต่อกันมานานในหมู่คนไทยเชื้อสายจีน แต่ “ภูเก็ต” ไม่มีประเพณีกินเจ แต่จะเรียกว่า “ประเพณีถือศีลกินผัก” ตามภาษาจีนฮกเกี้ยนที่เรียกว่า “เจี๊ยะฉ่าย” โดยประเพณีเจี๊ยะฉ่ายได้เริ่มขึ้นเป็นครั้งแรกที่หมู่บ้านไล่ทู (ในทู) ปัจจุบันเป็นหมู่บ้านกะทู้ ตำบลกะทู้ ชาวจีนกลุ่มนี้ได้อพยพเข้ามาทำเหมืองแร่ตั้งแต่สมัยกรุงศรีอยุธยา (ในสมัยรัชสมัยสมเด็จพระนารายณ์มหาราช) มีการค้าขายแร่ดีบุกกับประเทศตะวันตก พื้นที่รอบๆ ในทูอุดมสมบรูณ์ไปด้วยแร่ดีบุก และในขณะที่เศรษฐกิจของชาวในทู กรรกรจีน รวมถึงร้านค้า มีรายได้ดีมาก แต่กลับมีการเจ็บป่วยเป็นไข้เพิ่มสูงขึ้น ทำให้คณะงิ้วจากประเทศจีนที่มาแสดงให้ชาวจีนในภูเก็ตดู ได้ร่วมกันประกอบพิธีเจี๊ยะฉ่ายขึ้น โรคภัยไข้เจ็บต่างๆ ลดน้อยลงและหายไปในที่สุด จากนั้นพิธีกรรมก็มีการปรับให้ถูกต้องเหมาะสมจนชาวภูเก็ตเชื้อสายจีนได้ปฏิบัติสืบทอดกันมาทุกปีนับเวลาได้หลายร้อยปีแล้ว
Just four days before the festival, I slipped and shattered my ankle. Although walking again someday was a distant concern, photographing this festival was all important to the creation of our book. I told this to the surgeon and he performed emergency surgery on overtime, to make sure I would be able to cover this event. So there I was at the festival, three days later in a wheelchair. We arrived at the temple early and came upon the scene below.

Two Ma Song/men in a Trance
There were two men that were obviously in a trance, one with a spear and whip, the other with a staff. The man with the whip was staggering about, shouting and cracking the whip in all directions. I was afraid to get too close and settled for an overall shot that you see above.

Ma Song/man in a Trance at the Phuket Vegetarian Festival, with a Samurai Sword
Frustrated with the wheelchair, I decided to give my crutches a try and made my way towards the man with the Samurai sword stuck through his cheek. I forgot about being on crutches, and after the single photo that you see above, I slipped off my crutches. I felt someone grab my shoulder to prevent me from falling, and realized that the man with the sword through his face had caught me with one hand! I was worried that he’d break his trance, which would require the medical volunteers to provide immediate treatment to prevent post-trance bleeding. I should mention that all of these piercings are done with only petroleum jelly and iodine, by a trained medic, and these medics remain at the temple, to ensure their safety. Only after they have been put in a trance and possessed by the god Ma Song, can they endure pain. It’s said that after the festival, most of the participants only need bandages and there is usually zero scarring. All agree that after partaking in this ritual, they feel at peace and very focused for weeks.
เป็นช่างภาพแต่ต้องนั่งรถเข็นนี่รู้สึกแย่และน่าหงุดหงิดจริงๆ! … เลยให้ภรรยาเข็นรถเข้าไปใกล้ๆ แล้วลุกขึ้นยืนพร้อมไม้เท้าค้ำยัน เพื่อถ่ายภาพร่างม้าทรงท่านหนึ่งมีดาบเสียบอยู่ที่แก้ม เสี้ยวนาทีที่ถ่ายภาพไปไม่กี่ภาพ ก็รู้สึกว่ามีมือมาจับไหล่ ปรากฏว่าเป็นม้าทรงท่านนี้แหละที่จับเพราะคงเห็นว่ายืนค้ำอยู่กับไม้เท้าที่โอนเอน ตอนแรกก็กังวลว่าท่านจะเสียสมดุลและเกิดอันตราย แต่ไม่ต้องห่วง ร่างม้าทรงเหล่านี้มีทั้งพี่เลี้ยงและทีมแพทย์พยาบาลคอยดูแลอยู่ตลอดทั่วบริเวณ

I returned to my wheelchair and decided to specialize in the Ma Song that was sitting down. I saw a woman with what looked like large knitting needles in her cheeks (Image above), with the newly risen sun behind her. She seemed very aware and stared straight into the camera, providing me with a powerful image! At this time, firecrackers could be heard everywhere, and after a few more photos, all of which are in the book, we retreated to the comfort of our beachfront hotel.
จากนั้นก็กลับมานั่งวีลแชร์เหมือนเดิมและมองหาร่างม้าทรงที่นั่งอยู่ในระดับเดียวกับวีลแชร์ดีกว่า น่าจะปลอดภัยด้วยกันทั้งสองฝ่าย แล้วก็มองไปเห็นร่างม้าทรงหญิงท่านนี้เพิ่งเสียบเหล็กแหลมสองอันเข้าไปหมาดๆ ใบหน้าดูซีเรียสจริงจังขึงขังมาก กอปรกับพระอาทิตย์ฉายแสงมุมทำให้ดูมีพลัง จึงรีบรัวชัตเตอร์เลย แล้วเสียงประทัดก็ดังขึ้นทั่วสารทิศ เก็บภาพบรรยากาศต่ออีกหน่อย ใจสู้มากเพื่อภาพเด็ดมาลงหนังสือ เป็นอันเสร็จภารกิจ
Many Chinese and Thais alike celebrate this festival in less dangerous, but also self- sacrificing ways, for ten days: Wearing only white clothes, a strict vegetarian diet, that also avoids pungent smelling vegetables such as garlic, chives, shallots, and onion. Tobacco is also avoided. Merit making such as donating money, listening to sermons at the temple, or chanting.
เทศกาลกินเจ หรือ ประเพณีถือศีลกินผัก ในปัจจุบันมิได้มีจุดมุ่งหมายเพียงเพื่อจะป้องกันภัยพิบัติเท่านั้น แต่ยังเป็นการชำระจิตใจให้บริสุทธิ์และเป็นการเคารพถึงดวงวิญญาณของบรรพบุรุษที่ล่วงลับ โดยมีข้อปฏิบัติต่างๆ และหากปฏิบัติได้ครบถ้วนถูกต้องก็จะได้บุญอย่างแท้จริง
