Great Balls of Fire in Nong Khai, Thailand!

You may remember hearing about Nong Khai, Thailand, several years ago when it was recommended as a good place for Western expats to retire.  I agree with this!  Nong Khai is located on the Mekong river, in the far upper right corner of the Kingdom.  It’s beautiful, the people are very friendly, and just across the border is Laos, which makes the best beer and sandwiches in the world!  Nong Khai is also famous worldwide for the Naga Fireballs that rise out of the river every year at the end of the Buddhist lent, which is during the 11th Lunar month.  On the Western calendar, this is around October.  Before we get into the Hows and Whys, let’s take a look at the Naga legend.

According to many Southeast Asian Buddhist traditions, the Naga is a giant snake that is King of the Water-world and dwells beneath the Mekong River.  He had always wanted to be a Buddhist monk, but since animals cannot be ordained as monks, he resigned himself to be a guard for the Buddha, in order to protect him and listen to his teachings.  After the Buddha’s enlightenment, the Buddha ascended into the heavens, where he taught his mother, so she too could become free from the endless cycle of death and rebirth, too.  Afterwards, the Buddha returned to earth and the Naga welcomed his beloved teacher back with a show of fireballs.

ณ หนองคาย จังหวัดชายแดนติดฝั่งแม่น้ำโขง  หลายๆ คนนึกถึงบั้งไฟพญานาค ในช่วงคืนวันออกพรรษา (๑๕ ค่ำ เดือน ๑๑)  ตำนานความเชื่อเกี่ยวกับบั้งไฟพญานาคเกี่ยวเนื่องกับทางพระพุทธศาสนาว่า พญานาคอาศัยอยู่ในเมืองบาดาล   เมื่อครั้งพระพุทธเจ้าเสด็จมาโปรดสัตว์ก็เกิดความเลื่อมใสในพุทธศาสนา เลิกนิสัยดุร้าย และคิดจะหันมาออกบวช  แต่ก็ติดที่เป็นสัตว์ไม่สามารถบวชได้   พญานาคจึงปวารณาตนเป็นพุทธมามกะ   และเมื่อครั้งพระพุทธเจ้าเสด็จกลับจากการโปรดพระพุทธมารดาในเทวโลก ซึ่งตรงกับวันขึ้น ๑๕ ค่ำ เดือน ๑๑  เหล่าชาวพุทธมนุษย์โลกก็จะทำบุญตักบาตรพร้อมดอกไม้ธูปเทียนบูชา  ในขณะที่พญานาคก็ปล่อยลูกไฟ หรือ “บั้งไฟพญานาค” เพื่อเฉลิมฉลองการเสด็จกลับมาของพระพุทธองค์เช่นกัน

While we have not had the opportunity to witness this annual fireball display, it is a well-documented event that has been witnessed by thousands of spectators, after sunset until 11PM, during the week after Ok (pronounced “awk”) Pansa, or Buddhist Lent.  While some of the fireballs are tiny, others are larger than a basketball, and can be seen rising up to 45 meters into the air, without a trace of noise or smoke.  Some years ago, a team of investigators attributed the fireballs to tracer bullets, fired into the air from the Laotian side of the river.  This was met with great protests by the locals, who claimed the balls actually were seen emerging from the river, and all attempts to recreate this phenomenon have never matched the real event.  Scientists speculate that the flaming balls are flammable phosphine gas generated by the river environment, but are puzzled why it occurs around the same day each year in Thailand.  I should mention further that fireballs have been witnessed in other places around the world, but they always emanate from a pond, river, or swamp.  As with most legends, perhaps it’s best to enjoy it for what it is, and not ruin a good story!

ลักษณะบั้งไฟพญานาคเป็นลูกกลมเรืองแสงลอยขึ้นจากน้ำขึ้นไปในอากาศ จำนวนหลายลูก   มีตั้งแต่ขนาดเล็กเท่าหัวแม่มือ ไปจนถึงขนาดเท่าไข่ห่านและลูกบอล มีสีแดงอมชมพูบานเย็น หรือสีแดงทับทิม ไม่มีควัน ไม่มีเขม่า ไม่มีเปลว ไม่มีเสียง ไม่มีกลิ่น   ตำแหน่งที่บั้งไฟพญานาคมักจะปรากฏให้เห็นทั่วทั้งจังหวัดหนองคาย ตลอดริมน้ำโขง ในช่วงระหว่างตะวันตกดินถึงประมาณ ๒๓.๐๐ น. ก็จะหมดไป … ทั้งนี้ ความจริง / ความเชื่อ / วิทยาศาสตร์ / ศรัทธา แล้วแต่ท่านทั้งหลายจะพิจารณา … แต่มีรายงานการพบปรากฏการณ์ลักษณะเดียวกันนี้เช่น สหรัฐอเมริกา ซาอุดิอาระเบีย ออสเตรเลีย อังกฤษ และอีกหลายแห่งที่ยังไม่มีบทสรุปใดแต่บ่อยครั้งที่พบใกล้แหล่งน้ำ

Phra That Klang Nam and Phra That Nong Khai, Nong Khai

While in Nong Khai, if the Mekong River is low, you may get a chance to see Phra That Klang Nam, peeping out of the river.  I’ve traveled to Nong Khai many times, only to be disappointed, by not seeing it.  Luckily, when we were working on the THAILAND 180º book, we got to see it up-close, and with Fon holding my heels, I was able to photograph it.  Here’s more:

Phra That Klang Nam was consumed by the wandering Mekong River in the middle of the 18th century and finally fell over in 1847.  Sometimes only the top (actually the base) of this Laos style chedi is visible, and only during the dry season, when the water level drops to thirteen meters.  Boats carry pilgrims to the chedi for homage and to embellish it with colorful flags.  Since 2010, the River has been very low this time of year, exposing even the bottom of this Phra That.  A new, beautiful replica chedi, Phra That Nong Khai, has recently been built on the shore and is painted brilliant white with a golden spire.  If you look closely, you can see both in the image above.

ลำน้ำโขงที่เชี่ยวกรากนี้กัดเซาะตลิ่งจนพระธาตุพังล้มตะแคงลงในแม่น้ำมาเกือบ ๒ ศตวรรษ …”พระธาตุกลางน้ำ” จะพบเห็นได้เมื่อระดับน้ำลดในฤดูแล้ง  องค์พระธาตุจมอยู่กลางแม่น้ำโขงห่างจากฝั่งไทย ๑๘๐ เมตร  องค์พระธาตุนั้นก่ออิฐถือปูน มีฐานเขียง ๒ ชั้น ย่อเก็จ  โดยฐานด้านหนึ่งโผล่ขึ้นมาเหนือน้ำเพียงเล็กน้อย — เรานั่งเรือออกไปสักการะพระธาตุกลางน้ำและได้ถ่ายภาพนี้มา ในภาพจะเห็นพระธาตุองค์ที่จำลองขึ้นใหม่ (องค์สีขาวยอดสีทองที่อยู่เบื้องหลัง) โดยบรรจุชิ้นส่วนพระธาตุองค์เดิมไว้ ตั้งอยู่ริมฝั่งแม่น้ำโขง อำเภอเมือง  ปัจจุบันเป็นที่รู้จักในนาม พระธาตุหนองคาย หรือ พระธาตุกลางน้ำ เดิมชื่อพระธาตุหล้าหนอง

Wat Pho Chai, Nong Khai

There’s lots to see and eat in this province, and I recommend you stay for at least three days, but even that doesn’t seem like enough time!  At twilight, it’s fun to order a meal and take a river cruise down the Mekong River.  There is also a huge bazaar that sells everything imaginable from all around the region.  Another site that you might enjoy is the beautiful and highly revered Wat Pho Chai.  Here’s more:

The Luang Phor Phra Sai Buddha Image, at Wat Pho Chai in Nong Khai, was one of three legendary Buddha images brought by rafts from Laos, to Nong Khai, during the reign of King Rama III.  One of the other images called Phra Suk, sank in the river, during a thunderstorm and was never recovered.  The third Buddha image, Phra Soem, was moved to Wat Pathumwanaram, in Bangkok, during the reign of King Rama IV.  These Buddha images are held in very high regard by Thai people.  If you have a chance, have one of the locals recount some of the miracles and legends associated with these sacred images.  Also, be sure to allow some time to examine the beautiful murals around the ubosot.

จากนั้นไปสักการะพระพุทธรูปคู่บ้านคูเมือง ณ อุโบสถวัดโพธิ์ชัย พระอารามหลวง  อันเป็นที่ประดิษฐาน “หลวงพ่อพระใส” พระพุทธรูปปางมารวิชัยศิลปะล้านช้างที่หล่อด้วยทองสีสุก หนึ่งในสามพระพุทธรูป (พระสุกและพระเสริม) ที่ได้อัญเชิญมาจากประเทศลาวล่องมาตามแม่น้ำ โดยระหว่างทางพระสุกได้จมลงตรงปากแม่น้ำงึมเชื่อมต่อกับแม่น้ำโขงและยังคงอยู่ตรงนั้นมาจนปัจจุบัน  ส่วนพระใสและพระเสริมได้ถูกอัญเชิญมาประดิษฐานที่หนองคาย  จนต่อมาได้มีการอัญเชิญพระใสและพระเสริมมาประดิษฐานที่กรุงเทพฯ แต่เนื่องจากเกิดปาฏิหาริย์ทำให้เกวียนหักไม่สามารถอัญเชิญพระใสมาได้  จึงได้อัญเชิญพระใสขึ้นประดิษฐาน ณ วัดโพธิ์ชัย    ส่วนพระเสริมนั้นได้อัญเชิญมาประดิษฐานที่วัดปทุมวนาราม … ด้วยความอัศจรรย์หลายประการ หลวงพ่อพระใสจึงเป็นที่สักการะบูชาและเป็นพระพุทธรูปศักดิ์สิทธิ์คู่บ้านคู่เมืองหนองคายตราบจนทุกวันนี้
