Petchaburi, Thailand’s Must-See Attractions, Part 1
The town of Petchaburi, is located south of Bangkok in a province of the same name. It’s a short commercial van or bus ride from Bangkok, and not to be missed! This is a very tourist friendly town and it’s easy to take an excellent walking tour and talk with some of the locals, who may even invite you to lunch or dinner. Today we’ll look at four of the many attractions, starting with one of my favorite places in the whole Kingdom, Khao Wang.
“เยือนเมืองพริบพรี (ตอนที่ ๑)” เมืองติดเทือกเขาและที่ราบชายฝั่งทะเล มักเรียกชื่อสั้น ๆ ว่า เมืองเพชร หรือ จังหวัดเพชรบุรี ในปัจจุบัน
Khao Wang was built as a summer palace for King Rama IV in 1860, and is situated across three peaks of small hills, 92 Meters above the city, in Kaeng Krachan National Park. I suggest you take the funicular to avoid primate encounters with the packs of monkeys that call the peaks their home. They really don’t like to be photographed, or, err, monkeyed with in any way. Whatever you do, don’t curl your lips back and grin at them, as this is a huge sign of aggression to them, and while they seem cute and tame, they will attack you, should you try this! Also be sure to check the closing time for this attraction as they tend to sell tickets up until they close! After taking the tram to the summit, get a map, a water bottle and begin to orient yourself.
… พระบาทสมเด็จพระจอมเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัวทรงโปรดปรานเมืองเพชรบุรีตั้งแต่ครั้งยังผนวชอยู่ เมื่อขึ้นครองราชย์แล้วโปรดให้สร้างพระราชวัง (ฤดูร้อน), วัด, และพระเจดีย์ใหญ่ขึ้นบนเขาเตี้ยๆ ใกล้กับตัวเมืองและพระราชทานนามว่า “พระนครคีรี” มีชื่ออย่างเป็นทางการว่า อุทยานประวัติศาสตร์พระนครคีรี โดยพระนครคีรีแบ่งออกเป็นส่วนต่างๆ ดังนี้
ยอดเขาด้านทิศตะวันออก บริเวณไหล่เขาเป็นที่ตั้งของวัดมหาสมณาราม ภายในพระอุโบสถมีภาพจิตรกรรมฝาผนังโดยฝีมือท่านขรัวอินโข่ง จิตรกรช่างเขียนไทยคนแรกที่ริเริ่มเขียนภาพแบบสามมิติ มีความลึก-ตื้น เน้นแสงและเงา ใช้สีไม่ฉูดฉาด บนยอดเขาด้านทิศตะวันออกนี้เป็นที่ตั้งของวัดพระแก้วน้อย ด้านหน้าพระอุโบสถวัดพระแก้วน้อยจะเห็นพระปรางค์แดง ทรงจัตุรมุข ทาสีแดงทั้งองค์ ซึ่งเป็นพระปรางค์โปร่ง ภายในมีแท่นสำหรับประดิษฐานพระพุทธรูป (ปกติพระปรางค์จะตันและทึบ) ชาวบ้านเรียกพระปรางค์นี้ว่า “เจดีย์แดง”
The eastern most peak has a temple with beautiful murals in its ubosot. These paintings by Khrua In Khong were some of the first paintings in Thailand to use perspective technique, which the artist learned through formal training in Europe. Also on the peak is a temple named Wat Phra Kaew Noi, and a very photogenic hollow red phrang that contains a small Buddha Image.

The center peak has a bell-shaped chedi with some great views, and has few visitors, if you’re in need of some quiet time. The western peak contains the throne hall and other small buildings, which were designed by a team of German architects in an Art Nouveau, or Jugendstil style, with some Chinese style thrown in for good measure. This park area is well landscaped and very relaxing to walk around. It’s a shame that the park closes at 4PM, just as the light is starting to turn golden. Once a year there’s a Phra Nakorn Khiri Festival complete with a light and sound show, and fireworks. During this time the park closes later in the evening, but draws huge crowds.
ยอดเขากลาง เป็นที่ประดิษฐานพระธาตุจอมเพชรมีลักษณะเป็นเจดีย์สีขาว ทรงลังกา ซึ่งพระบาทสมเด็จพระจอมเกล้าฯ โปรดเกล้าให้บูรณะเจดีย์เก่าที่มีอยู่แล้วและได้อัญเชิญพระบรมสารีริกธาตุมาบรรจุไว้ จากจุดชัยภูมิของพระธาตุจอมเพชรที่ตั้งอยู่บนเขาสูงนี้เป็นจุดที่สามารถมองเห็นหมู่มวลพระที่นั่งต่างๆ บนยอดเขาอีก ๒ ยอด รวมทั้งทิวทัศน์ของตัวเมืองเพชรบุรีได้อีกด้วย
ยอดเขาตะวันตก เป็นที่ตั้งของพระราชวังที่ประทับโดยประกอบด้วยพระที่นั่งและอาคารต่างๆมากมาย โดยมีทีมสถาปนิกชาวเยอรมันนีเป็นผู้ออกแบบ พระตำหนักได้ใช้ลักษณะทางสถาปัตยกรรมแบบอาร์ต นูโว (Art Nouveau) หรือที่เยอรมันเรียกว่า ยูเกนด์สติล (Jugendstil) ตัวพระตำหนักจะเน้นความทันสมัยโดยจะไม่มีลายปูนปั้นวิจิตรพิสดารเหมือนอาคารในสมัยเดียวกัน การก่อสร้างพระที่นั่งแห่งนี้มาสำเร็จในรัชสมัยพระบาทสมเด็จพระมงกุฎเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัว … ภาพทางเดินมุ่งหน้าสู่พระที่นั่งเวชยันต์วิเชียรปราสาท ส่วนทางขวามือนี้เป็นพระที่นั่งราชธรรมสภา อาคารชั้นเดียว ศิลปะผสมระหว่างศิลปะยุโรป จีน และไทย จุดเด่นจะอยู่ตรงประตูบ้านโค้งสีเขียว ตัดกับผนังสีขาวที่มีลายปูนปั้นสวยงาม
พระนครคีรี เปิดให้เข้าชมทุกวัน เวลา ๐๘.๓๐-๑๖.๓๐ น. (ส่วนพิพิธภัณฑ์เปิด ๐๙.๐๐ -๑๖.๐๐ น.) มีบริการรถรางไฟฟ้าขึ้นเขาทางด้านตะวันตก
There is also another palace in Petchaburi known as Phra Ram Ratchaniwet, which was built by King Rama V as a palace in the rainy season in 1916. King Rama VI used the palace to meet state visitors and sometimes the visitors stayed here, as well. The architecture style is European, and contains many items that were firsts to Thailand, such as a badminton court, which has since been turned into a garden. King Rama V was a well traveled man, and many of the furnishings in this palace reflect this. Photography is not allowed in most rooms, which I suppose helps with the sale of their souvenir books! 😉 Let’s move on to one last site, that is spectacular, Tham Khao Luang.
พระรามราชนิเวศน์ หรือ พระราชวังบ้านปืน ตั้งอยู่ที่เขตบ้านปืน ริมแม่น้ำเพชรบุรี เป็นพระราชวังที่พระบาทสมเด็จพระจุลจอมเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัวโปรดเกล้าฯ ให้สร้างพระราชวังแบบยุโรปเพื่อใช้สำหรับแปรพระราชฐานในฤดูฝน โดยมีสถาปนิก วิศวกร มัณฑนากร เป็นชาวเยอรมนีเพื่อให้มีศิลปะเป็นแบบเดียวกัน พระที่นั่งองค์นี้จึงมีรูปแบบศิลปะตะวันตกอย่างเต็มตัว ส่วนของอาคารภายนอกดูเรียบง่าย แต่เน้นความอลังการของตัวอาคาร ความงดงามของลวดลายบานประตูและหน้าต่าง หลังคาสีน้ำตาลเป็นกระเบื้องนำเข้าจากต่างประเทศ มีลักษณะเป็นอาคารสองชั้น ภายในมีสนามแบดมินตันแห่งแรกของประเทศไทย แต่ปัจจุบันปรับปรุงให้เป็นสวนหย่อม อีกทั้งหลายส่วนภายในอาคารงดการถ่ายภาพ ที่นี่เปิดให้เข้าชมทุกวัน เวลา ๐๘.๐๐-๑๖.๐๐ น.
A few kilometers from the summer palace is one of Thailand’s most impressive cave shrines, Tham Khao Luang. Just flag down a tuk-tuk driver and be sure to tell him to wait there for you and bring you back. There are usually some “tour guides” trolling around the cave’s parking lot, but there is really no need for one. Be sure to get a picture of the stuffed toy alligators that can be rented to protect cars from the monkeys. They actually seem to work, and I’ve seen monkeys raiding pick-up truck payloads and stealing snacks out of cars with open windows, that didn’t invest in one. After buying a ticket, head for the cave’s entrance. The cave is cared for by a friendly nun, who you may meet as she sweeps the entire walkway every morning.
ถ้ำเขาหลวง …จอดรถแล้วอย่าลืมเอาตุ๊กตาจระเข้มาวางไว้บนหลังรถนะ เจ้าจ๋อจะได้ไม่มายุ่งวุ่นวายกับรถของท่าน แต่ระหว่างทางก็จะมีลิงมาคอยป้วนเปี้ยน อย่าลืมซื้อหาผลไม้ไปเลี้ยงเจ้าลิงน้อยเหล่านี้ด้วยล่ะ … เขาหลวงเป็นภูเขาขนาดเล็ก มียอดสูงสุดเพียง ๙๒ เมตร มีหินงอกหินย้อย สีสันสวยงาม ภายในมีปล่องที่แสงอาทิตย์สามารถส่องเข้ามาภายในถ้ำได้ทำให้สวยงามยิ่งขึ้น … ถ้ำเขาหลวงนี้สุนทรภู่ได้เคยตามเสด็จพระบาทสมเด็จพระนั่งเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัวและเขียนไว้ในนิราศเมืองเพชร … พระบาทสมเด็จพระจอมเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัวทรงโปรดถ้ำเขาหลวงนี้มากและทรงโปรดเกล้าฯ ให้บูรณะพระพุทธรูปเก่าแก่ที่มีมาแต่โบราณภายในถ้ำหลายองค์ และให้สร้างบันไดลงไปในถ้ำ ภายในถ้ำแบ่งพื้นที่โดยธรรมชาติเป็น ๓ ส่วน มีพระพุทธบาทจำลอง และหินงอกหินย้อยสวยมาก อีกด้านนึงมีพระพุทธรูปเรียงราย รวม ๑๗๐ องค์ มีเจดีย์ในถ้ำ ๖ องค์ ในถ้ำส่วนนี้มีปล่องที่แสงสาดส่องเข้ามาถึงพื้นถ้ำ
Fon, my wife told me that the first time she visited the shrine as a child, she had to walk down a tall bamboo ladder to access the cave, but today there are steps. Once inside you’ll notice some nice stalactite formations, and a large Buddha image that was cast by King Rama V. If you time your visit right, you’ll get a picture of the sun streaming through a hole in the ceiling of the cave, which gives the surroundings and ethereal glow. The cave is divided into three sections which contain 170 Buddha images and 6 chedis. If you bring a flashlight and explore, you may find other formations, including one that supposedly resembles Christ on the cross, but I must admit that even with my imagination, I saw no such thing! The temperature in the shrine is cool, and as the day progresses, the cave can get crowed with folks escaping the heat. This is one of the few photos that I used a tripod for, and I recommend that you bring one too!
