The Erawan Shrine in Bangkok, Thailand
This shrine which is located by the Grand Hyatt Erawan Hotel, in the center of Bangkok’s business district, contains a statue of Phra Phrom, the Thai representation of the Hindu god of creation, Brahma. This shrine was erected at the advice of an astrologer to ward off evil spirits that had delayed the completion of a hotel, that has since been torn down and replaced by the Grand Hyatt Erawan Hotel. Around the shrine are many vendors selling offering objects such as flower garlands, wooden elephant statues, and incense. Dancers can also be hired to ask, or thank Brahma for favors. This shrine is busy at all hours of the day and night as worshipers come and go. Occasionally, a person will promise to dance naked in front of the shrine if a certain wish is granted, but I’ve never witnessed this.
