Puppet Masters to Descend on Bangkok!
We’re very excited about the upcoming puppet show: Harmony World Puppet Carnival in Bangkok Thailand 2014, that is coming here in November! These shows are rarely seen, outside of museums, or the country where they were invented, and will be a real sharing of culture and folklore, that is slowly disappearing from the modern world. Today, let’s take a look at two kinds of puppets from Thailand, the Nang Talung, and Nang Yai.

… ซึ่งบล๊อกวันนี้ของเราจะกล่าวถึง “หุ่นหนัง” ซึ่งมีทั้ง หนังตะลุง และ หนังใหญ่
Nang Talung Puppet Characters, Chao Mueang and Nang Mueang
First, let’s look at Nang Talung, a style that originated in the south of Thailand. These puppets are made from cow, or buffalo hide and are supported by sticks, that also allow for the movement of the character’s hands, as well as their mouth on some puppets. The photo above shows two Nang Talung puppet characters called Chao Mueang and Nang Mueang. These are souvenir puppets that we bought but were lovingly made according to tradition. We photographed them behind a screen, to show how they might look in action.
หนังตะลุง ปรากฎอยู่ทั้งภาคทั้งใต้ กลาง และเหนือ ไม่สามารถที่จะชี้ชัดลงไปว่าหนังตะลุงมีแหล่งกำเนิดดั้งเดิม ณ สถานที่ใด แต่หนังตะลุงเป็นมหรสพพื้นบ้านที่แพร่หลายไม่แพ้ภาพยนตร์หรือดนตรีจนกลายเป็นศิลปะการแสดงประจำท้องถิ่นของภาคใต้ และภาพหนังตะลุงสองตัวด้านบนนี้ เจ้าเมืองและนางเมือง
The shows feature the puppets behind a large translucent screen, and are lit from behind. Nang Talung shows are accompanied by a small Thai orchestra, featuring large Indian drums, and the ever present sound of small heavy cymbals called ching. The ching keeps the rhythm and serve as the conductor. Almost every performance features two characters, I-teng, and I-noonui, who provide comic relief. These much-adored characters are shirtless and wear a wrap-around cloth, called a lungi that is folded to resemble short pants. Usually, they carry a tool in their hand. During the performance, these puppets may be operated by one, or two puppet masters, as needed. Although it’s unclear when these shows were first created, the performances were revived in the late 18th century and are still performed sporadically to this day.
การแสดง ใช้เงาของตัวหนังที่ทำจากหนังวัวแห้ง-แบน ฉลุลวดลายและเขียนสีบนตัวหนัง เชิดโดยใช้วิธีบังคับด้วยก้านไม้ติดตรึงกับตัวหนัง คนเชิดจะชูตัวหนังไว้เหนือหัว เต้นพร้อมกับเชิดไปตามดนตรีและบทขับร้อง ในการแสดงต้องมีจอผ้าขาว ให้แสงสว่างอยู่เบื้องหลัง ให้เกิดเงาของหนังปรากฏบนจอผ้า แสดงและเล่าเรื่องราวที่ผูกร้อยเป็นนิยาย ดำเนินเรื่องด้วยบทร้อยกรองที่ขับร้องเป็นสำเนียงท้องถิ่น มีบทสนทนาแทรกเป็นระยะ ประกอบดนตรีพื้นบ้านภาคใต้ เช่น ทับ กลองทัด โหม่ง ฉิ่ง ปี่ชวา แล้วพัฒนาปรับเปลี่ยนตามยุคสมัยนิยม … แต่หนังตะลุงเกิดขึ้นเมื่อใดนั้น ยังไม่มีหลักฐานยืนยันแน่ชัด สันนิษฐานว่าคงเป็นช่วงต้นกรุงรัตนโกสินทร์ เพราะกลอนหนังตะลุงนิยมแต่งเป็นกลอนแปด ยิ่งในภาคใต้วรรณกรรมพื้นบ้านรุ่นเก่าแก่ล้วนแต่งเป็นกาพย์ทั้งสิ้น กลอนแปดเพิ่งมาเป็นที่นิยมกันอย่างกว้างขวางก็เมื่อหลังสุนทรภู่แต่งเรื่องพระอภัยมณีออกเผยแพร่แล้วนี่เอง
ในเรื่องราวของหนังตะลุง มีพระ (เจ้าเมือง), นาง (นางเมือง), ยักษ์, เทวดา, และมีตัวตลกมากมาย ซึ่งตัวตลกนี้ดึงดูดคนดูหนังตะลุงมากกว่าตัวละครอื่นๆ เช่น อ้ายเท่ง และ อ้ายหนูนุ้ย มีปรากฏอยู่ในเกือบทุกเรื่องของหนังตะลุงเกือบทุกคณะ และยังมีตัวตลกที่เห็นประจำอีกหลายตัว เช่น นายยอดทอง นายสีแก้ว อ้ายสะหม้อ อ้ายขวัญเมือง อ้ายโถ และผู้ใหญ่พูน ส่วนใหญ่ตัวตลกเหล่านี้จะไม่ใส่เสื้อ บางตัวนุ่งโสร่งสั้นแค่เข่า บางตัวนุ่งกางเกง และส่วนใหญ่จะมีอาวุธประจำตัว ตัวตลกทุกตัวสามารถขยับมือขยับปากได้ โดยปกติตัวตลกหนังตะลุงจะต้องมีคู่หู เพื่อเอาไว้รับส่งมุกตลกโต้ตอบกัน ในแต่ละเรื่องจะมีตัวตลกเอกอย่างน้อยสองคู่ คือ เป็นพี่เลี้ยงพระเอกคู่หนึ่ง และเป็นพี่เลี้ยงนางเอกคู่หนึ่ง แต่เดิมเป็นเรื่องคล้ายวรรณคดี จักรๆ วงศ์ๆ หรือชาดก ในปัจจุบันมีทั้งนวนิยายสมัยใหม่ นวนิยายสะท้อนสังคม หรือการเมือง (ภาพด้านล่างนี้ คือ คุณฉลอง จันทร์ชุม ผู้รับการสืบทอดหัตกรรมแกะรูปหนังตะลุง ๑ ในบุตร ๖ คนของครูอิ่ม จันทร์ชุม ณ ศูนย์ศิลปหัตถกรรมรูปหนังบางแก้ว จังหวัดพัทลุง)
Another type of puppet is the Nang Yai, tends to be much larger. These are also crafted from animal hide, and the performances are similar to the Nang Talung. The Nang Yai stories usually have themes from the Indian saga, the Ramayana, and E-now, whose stories gets their influence from Indonesia. Usually, these large puppets are operated by a single puppet master. The Nang Yai puppet shows were also popular in the 17th century, until their dedicated theater burned down, along with all the puppets. The shows were revived again during the reign of King Rama V and performed throughout Thailand today.
หุ่นหนังอีกประเภทหนึ่งคือ หนังใหญ่ เป็นมหรสพเก่าแก่ของไทยที่เกิดขึ้นมาในสมัยกรุงสุโขทัย โดยนิยมเล่นกันในวังหรืองานพระราชพิธีต่างๆ ต่อมาศิลปะการแสดงแขนงนี้ได้ถูกทำลายไปเกือบหมดเมื่อครั้งเสียกรุงศรีอยุธยา ครั้งที่ ๒ ก่อนที่จะถูกรื้อฟื้นกลับคืนมาอีกครั้งในสมัยต้นกรุงรัตนโกสินทร์
สำหรับ “หนังใหญ่วัดขนอน” เริ่มประดิษฐ์ขึ้นในสมัยรัชกาลที่ ๕ โดยท่านพระครูศรัทธาสุนทร (หลวงปู่กล่อม) โดยหนังใหญ่ชุดแรกที่สร้างขึ้นคือชุด “หนุมานถวายแหวน” และต่อมาได้สร้างเพิ่มอีกรวม ๙ ชุด ตัวหนังทำจากแผ่นหนังวัวแห้งขนาดใหญ่ แกะสลัก ฉลุลวดลายสวยงามเป็นตัวละครต่างๆ ตรึงแผ่นหนังด้วยก้านไม้ เคลื่อนไหวโดยการเชิดผ่านแสง ทาบเงาลงบนจอที่ขึงด้วยผ้าขาว เพื่อคนดูจะได้มองเห็นถนัดตา มีผู้เชิดให้เกิดเงาบนจอ และใช้การพากย์ การเจรจา เป็นการดำเนินเรื่อง ประกอบดนตรีวงปี่พาทย์เครื่องใหญ่ (ภาพด้านล่าง : หนังใหญ่ในพิฑิธภัณฑ์หนังใหญ่วัดขนอน จังหวัดราชบุรี)
A Nang Yai Puppet on Display at the Museum Near Wat Khanon in Ratchaburi
After photographing master puppet craftsman, Mr. Chalong Chanchum at work, we were pleased to learn about the spectacular museum at Wat Khanon, in the province of Ratchaburi. This museum houses over 313 well preserved Nang Yai puppets expertly displayed and a live performance is given every Saturday. I took the photo below while the final preparations were being made for the show, as my fisheye lens required me to be on stage.
ปัจจุบัน พิพิธภัณฑ์หนังใหญ่วัดขนอน จ.ราชบุรี ที่มีอนุรักษ์ตัวหนังใหญ่ชุดเก่าที่มีอายุมากกว่า ๑๐๐ ปี มีตัวหนังมากถึง ๓๑๓ ตัว เป็นวัดเพียงแห่งเดียวที่มีมหรสพเป็นของวัด มีตัวหนังและคณะหนังใหญ่ที่สมบูรณ์ และมีการสืบสานศิลปะการแสดงหนังใหญ่ ซึ่งจากเดิมที่เคยแสดงอยู่แต่ในรั้ววังก็ถูกนำออกมาสู่บ้านของเจ้านายและขยายมาสู่วัดและราษฎร เปิดให้ผู้สนใจเข้าชมได้ทุกวันตั้งแต่เวลา ๐๘.๐๐ – ๑๗.๐๐ น. และจัดให้มีการแสดงหนังใหญ่เป็นประจำทุกวันเสาร์เพื่อสืบสานการแสดงศิลปะไทยแขนงนี้ให้ยังคงอยู่คู่กับสังคมไทยสืบไป และ THAILAND180º ก็ไม่พลาดเก็บภาพหนังใหญ่ที่คณะแสดงเตรียมบนเวทีก่อนการแสดงมาให้ชมด้านล่างนี้
Puppet Performance outside the Museum at Wat Khanon, Ratchaburi
As we mentioned earlier, in November of this year there will be an enormous performance of all kinds of puppets from around the world. Mark these dates on your calendar, and in the next blog we’ll tell you about some of the other types of puppets that will be shown.
