Mae Naak Phra Khanong Shrine, Wat Mahabut in Bangkok, Thailand

The shrine of Mae Naak Phra Khanong, near Wat Mahabut, contains an image of the ghost, as well as many offerings. Mae Naak was once a much-feared ghost, but now has made peace and helps devotees avoid conscription, heal bad marriages, and most of all, win the lottery. This is without a doubt the most famous of the hundreds of Thai ghosts.  In addition to the many movies made about her life, there has been an opera, a musical, and even a feature-length cartoon.

It’s easy to understand the fascination that the Thais have with Mae Naak, after watching the movie, but many Thai people fear the very mention of her name, especially at night!  Once I heard the legend, I set off for Wat Mahabut the very next day!  When I told the taxi driver where I was going, his eyes got big, then he shook his head, looked me over and laughed.  “You, win lotto big, for sure,” he said and laughed as we sped off.  I was dressed all in black, as always, so I guess his laugh was appropriate.  I told him that I had been working on a painting of her, which only drew a puzzled look from him.  Traffic was bad in Bangkok, as usual, and I got out and walked the last few blocks.  Finally, I entered the grounds of Wat Mahabut and was met with disapproving glares.  Some of the vendors shouted at me in Thai to leave, until I pretended to be interested in their more expensive offerings.  As soon as I walked away without buying, they started shouting “awk bai!” (leave!), but I hadn’t come all the way to the other side of town to be chased away like a dog!  I ignored them and some others and continued on to the shrine.

There in all its glory was a statue of Mae Naak, with a TV in front of her blaring soap operas.  Surrounding her were countless toys and dolls, and behind her were beautiful silk dresses and paintings of her.  All of these, including the TV and electricity, were offerings of her devotees, either to ask for or thank her for a favor. I paid my respect to her and left.  Later, I returned with Thai friends and there was no problems or rudeness.  It seems that with the release of every new movie about her, hordes of tourists descend on the temple and annoy the locals.  It is a must see, but keep what I’ve said in mind and dress and act very respectfully!
