Time for a Road Trip: Nakhon Pathom’s Grand Temple Festival has Begun! – นครปฐม

Have you ever felt like sight-seeing, but didn’t know where you wanted to go? Sometimes we just need one excuse to get us out of the house, and then we find many things do and see along the way. If you happen to be in Bangkok, there are many short day trips that will serve as an excuse. One suggestion is a visit to Nakhon Pathom. Nakhon Pathom’s Grand Temple Festival is held on the grounds around Phra Pathom Chedi. The fair will showcase local entertainment at night, along with food and souvenirs. This year, the festival is held from November 22-30, 2015. Usually, the fair opens around mid-day and continues into the evening. Temple fairs tend to be very lively with lots of food and local color. Perfect for pictures and fun!
Wat Phra Pathom Chedi, is a royal monastery, and houses Phra Pathom Chedi, the largest pagoda in Thailand and is the official provincial symbol of Nakhon Pathom, which is located about one hour outside of Bangkok. It is a must see for Thai people and crowded on the weekends.
The present Phra Pathom Chedi was built during the reign of King Rama IV in 1853. Under his royal command, the new chedi was constructed to cover the former chedi (which dated back to the 6th century AD) in the shape of an upside down bell with a prang top. The construction of the new, huge chedi was completed in the reign of King Rama V in 1870 AD., after 17 years. The finished chedi became a circular one that covered the upside-down, Lankan style, bell-shaped chedi. The height from bottom to the top is about 120.45 meters, and the diameter is 233.50 meters at the base.
งานนมัสการองค์พระปฐมเจดีย์ ๙ วัน ๙ คืน เป็นประเพณีสืบเนื่องมาตั้งแต่ครั้งพระบาทสมเด็จพระจอมเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัว รัชกาลที่ ๔ โปรดให้ปฏิสังขรณ์พระปฐมเจดีย์องค์ใหญ่แบบลังกาหุ้มครอบองค์เจดีย์เดิม และจำลองพระเจดีย์องค์เดิมไว้ทางทิศใต้ของพระเจดีย์องค์ใหม่ ทั้งยังโปรดให้สร้างวิหารทิศในระหว่างวิหารทั้ง ๔ ทิศ มีวิหารคตเชื่อมโดยรอบ และปรับปรุงพื้นที่รอบๆ ให้สวยงาม นอกจากนี้ยังทรงให้ขุดคลองเจดีย์บูชาและคลองมหาสวัสดิ์ เพื่อเชื่อมการคมนาคมระหว่างกรุงเทพฯ กับนครปฐมให้สะดวกขึ้น และโปรดฯให้สร้างพระราชวัง ชื่อวังปฐมนคร เพื่อใช้เป็นที่ประทับในการเสด็จพระราชดำเนินมานมัสการองค์พระปฐมเจดีย์ และให้เปลี่ยนชื่อองค์เจดีย์จากเดิมว่า “พระประธมเจดีย์” เป็น “พระปฐมเจดีย์” เมื่อเสร็จแล้วโปรดให้มีการเฉลิมฉลอง และถือเป็นประเพณีที่ปฏิบัติสืบต่อกันมาจนถึงปัจจุบัน ซึ่งจัดเป็นประจำทุกปีในวันขึ้น ๑๒ ค่ำ จนถึง วันแรม ๑๕ ค่ำ เดือน ๑๒ และในปี ๒๕๕๘ นี้จัดขึ้นในวันที่ ๒๒ – ๓๐ พฤศจิกายน (ภาพพระปฐมเจดีย์เสียดฟ้าสมคำขวัญประจำจังหวัดจริงๆ)
Pomelos
Nakhon Pathom is well known for pomelo or som-o, that resembles a grapefruit. Thai people sometimes refer to Nakhon Pathom as “The sweet pomelo town”. The fertile ground provides many agricultural opportunities for the people, with most of the residents earning their living from agriculture, plantations and farms; growing food crops as well as fruit orchards, such as coconut, pomelo, rice and also orchids. Don’t miss buying some pomelo, especially if you see the kind in our photo! This is the best-loved type of pomelo, called Khao Nam Phueng, which is not too sweet, or too bitter. It tastes a lot like the western grapefruit, but not as sour. Thais like to eat the fruit fresh or in a sweet & sour salad called Yum Som-O.

Another famous temple in Nakhon Pathom is Wat Sisa Thong, which is well known for its statue of “Phra Rahu”, the God of Darkness. Worshipers offer Rahu eight black offerings: black chicken, black jelly, black liquor, black rice and black pudding, candle, incense sticks and flower that are also black. In 1997, Khunying Phankrua Yongchaiyudh, former Prime Minister Chavalit’s wife, sought help from Phra Rahu to keep her husband’s coalition government together. Seeking the blessing from Phra Rahu to repel bad luck is a common practice. Wat Sisa Thong is most popular with Rahu followers as it has a giant statue of Phra Rahu, said to be the largest in Thailand.
Wat Sisa Thong is actually at the nearby village of Sisa Thong and not at Nakhon Pathom proper. The bus to/from Bangkok passes through Sisa Thong bus stop, which is about a 10-minute walk from Wat Sisa Thong, so it’s best to visit before/after going to Nakhon Pathom. Make sure to let them know you are getting off Wat Sisa Thong when buying the ticket, as the price is different (cheaper) and they’ll only stop if there are people getting off/on at that stop.
Legend has it there were many Laotian communities settled in this area since early Rattanakosin period, around the reign of King Rama I. One Laotian community situated here was named Hua Thong, after they found a gold Buddha head underground in this area and built a temple named Hua Thong as well. But both the community and the temple changed their name to Sisa Thong which is considered a politer word in the Thai language.
Beside the Rahu Statue, this temple is known for their amulets which still use the rituals and spells from an ancient Laotian script book. Wat Sisa Thong also has some beautiful Thai Buddhist architectural design and is decorated with Thai angel or deva, and devil stuccos along with glass mosaics which are stunning.
วัดศีรษะทอง เป็นวัดที่รู้จักกันอย่างแพร่หลาย มีประชาชนนิยมมาสักการบูชาพระราหูเพื่อความเป็นสิริมงคลที่วัดนี้เป็นจำนวนมาก ตามประวัติกล่าวว่าวัดศีรษะทอง สร้างขึ้นในสมัยรัตนโกสินทร์ตอน ในรัชสมัยพระบาทสมเด็จพระพุทธยอดฟ้าจุฬาโลกมหาราชรัชกาลที่ ๑ นั้นได้อัญเชิญพระแก้วมรกตจากเวียงจันทน์มาประดิษฐานที่กรุงเทพมหานครและได้อพยพชาวเวียงจันทน์มาตั้งหลักแหล่งอยู่หลายที่ด้วยกัน และมีกลุ่มชาวเวียงจันทน์กลุ่มหนึ่งมาปักหลักบริเวณตำบลห้วยตะโก ตั้งเป็นหมู่บ้านชื่อหมู่บ้านหัวทอง เนื่องจากขุดพบเศียรพระเป็นทอง เมื่ออยู่เป็นชุมชนใหญ่จึงได้ช่วยกันสร้างวัดขึ้นและตั้งชื่อวัดตามชื่อหมู่บ้านว่าวัดหัวทอง และเปลี่ยนชื่อในกาลต่อมาเป็น “วัดศีรษะทอง”
ความนิยมในการสักการะพระราหูที่วัดนี้สืบเนื่องมาจาก หลวงพ่อไตร อดีตเจ้าอาวาส สร้างพระราหูตามสูตรตำรับใบลานจารอักขระขอมลาวที่นำมาจากประเทศลาว ใช้เพียงกะลาตาเดียว มาแกะเป็นรูปพระราหูอมจันทร์ จนสืบมาถึงหลวงพ่อน้อยพระเกจิดังอดีตเจ้าอาวาส พระราหูอมจันทร์แกะทรงเสมา ซึ่งถูกจัดอันดับให้เป็นหนึ่งในชุดเบญจเครื่องรางของขลังในตำนาน
ด้วยความศรัทธาของผู้คนที่หลั่งไหล่มาสักการะบูชาและบริจาคทรัพย์ทำนุบำรุงวัดอย่างไม่ขาดสาย ทางวัดจึงได้นำเงินบริจาคส่วนหนึ่งมาสร้างโบสถ์และวิหารในรูปแบบสถาปัตยกรรมไทยประยุกต์ ประดับตบแต่งด้วยปูนปั้นหมู่เทวดานางฟ้าอันอ่อนช้อยสวยงามมาก
