Exploring the Kingdom of Sukhothai

A Bit of History
The Kingdom of Sukhothai flourished between 1238 to 1378, has been called, “The Golden Age of Thai Art” and the birthplace of the Tai (Thai) nation. During this period, the Thai written language was created from a mix of Khmer, Mon and Burmese scripts. Art influences from the Mons, monks from Sri Lanka and Srivijaya blended to create the Sukhothai style. Even though many parts of the 27 square mile the Sukhothai National Historic Park encompasses, have been restored, the park has a very historical feel to it, with it’s beautiful walls, moats, temples, chedis, and palace. The whole area is a photographer’s dream, and even those not fond of Buddhist art, will enjoy the spacious park and scenery. The park itself, is located 12 km from the modern city of Sukhothai, but there are buses to transport tourists back and forth, as well as a few hotels and guest houses within walking distance. We spent a few days at the park and befriended a tuk-tuk driver, and using our phone were able to come and go with ease. เมืองสุโขทัยเคยเป็นราชธานีของไทยที่มีความเจริญรุ่งเรือง เป็นศูนย์กลางการปกครอง ศาสนา และเศรษฐกิจ ดังจะเห็นได้จากภายในอุทยานฯ ครอบคลุมพื้นที่กว่า ๗๐ ตารางกิโลเมตร มีสถานที่สำคัญที่เป็นส่วนพระราชวัง ศาสนสถาน โบราณสถาน มีคูเมือง กำแพงเมือง และประตูเมืองโบราณล้อมรอบอยู่ในรูปสี่เหลี่ยม เปิดให้เข้าชมทุกวันตั้งแต่เวลา ๐๖.๐๐ – ๒๑.๐๐ น. (ปิดจำหน่ายบัตรเวลา ๑๘.๐๐ น.) โดยช่วงเวลาประมาณ ๑๙.๐๐ – ๒๑.๐๐ น. จะเปิดไฟส่องโบราณสถานซึ่งให้อารมณ์คนละแบบกับช่วงเวลากลางวันเลยทีเดียว

The park opens early, around 6AM, and we set out for Wat Mahathat, which is located in the center. This temple has a seated Buddha, tall pillars and a large chedi, which you can see in the image above. We visited the park in the rainy season, which is recommended for full reflecting pools, and enhanced color details. กำแพงเมืองสุโขทัย มีแผนผังเป็นรูปสี่เหลี่ยมผืนผ้า มีขนาดกว้าง ๑,๓๐๐ เมตร ยาว ๑,๘๐๐ เมตร มีกำแพงชั้นในเป็นศิลาแลงก่อบนคันดิน กำแพง ๒ ชั้นนอกเป็นคูน้ำสลับกับคันดิน นอกจากทำหน้าที่ป้องกันข้าศึกแล้วคูน้ำยังใช้ระบายน้ำไม่ให้ไหลท่วมเมืองอีกด้วย … ชำระเงินค่าเข้าชมแล้วเริ่มกันเลย ไปช่วงปลายฝนต้นหนาว และออกไปอุทยานฯ เช้าๆ อากาศดี แดดไม่ร้อน ได้ภาพสวยกว่าเยอะ… เริ่มที่ วัดมหาธาตุ ตั้งอยู่กลางเมือง เป็นวัดใหญ่ และวัดสำคัญของกรุงสุโขทัย มีพระเจดีย์มหาธาตุทรงดอกบัวตูม หรือทรงพุ่มข้าวบิณฑ์ เป็นศิลปะแบบสุโขทัยแท้ ตั้งเป็นเจดีย์ประธาน ล้อมรอบด้วยเจดีย์ ๘ องค์บนฐานเดียวกัน มีปรางค์ศิลาแลงตั้งอยู่ทั้ง ๔ ทิศ และเจดีย์ทรงปราสาทก่อด้วยอิฐที่ได้รับอิทธิพลมาจากล้านนา จากการสำรวจ พบว่าบริเวณวัดมหาธาตุมีเจดีย์แบบต่างๆ วิหาร ซุ้มพระ (มณฑป) พระอุโบสถ ตระพัง อยู่รายรอบ และในภาพด้านบนนี้เป็นมุมจาก ๑ ใน ๔ ตระพังของวัดมหาธาตุ

Next we practically ran the rest of the way to Wat Si Chum. The gate to the large Buddha image was locked until the caretaker arrived some thirty minutes later. Once inside, I was shocked and impressed with the size of the Buddha image, Phra Achana. This 13th Century stucco-covered brick Buddha image is over 11 meters high, and tightly surrounded by a brick walled mondop, with just a narrow opening -but no roof. As a photographer, I was always a bit frustrated at not being able to capture the whole image and it’s surrounding, until I used my fisheye lens for this project. Timing is so tricky with this Buddha image, as the lighting can be very contrasty.
วัดศรีชุม เป็นวัดที่ประดิษฐาน “พระอจนะ” เป็นพระพุทธรูปปูนปั้นปางมารวิชัยขนาดใหญ่ สันนิษฐานว่าสร้างในสมัยพ่อขุนรามคำแหง โดยปรากฏอยู่ในศิลาจารึกสุโขทัยหลักที่ ๑ พระพุทธรูปนี้มีขนาดหน้าตักกว้าง ๑๑.๓๐ เมตร ซึ่งใหญ่มากจนมณฑปนี้ดูคับแคบไปในทันที ลักษณะของวิหารสร้างเป็นรูปสี่เหลี่ยมลักษณะคล้ายมณฑป แต่หลังคาพังทลายลงมาหมดแล้ว เหลือเพียงผนังทั้งสี่ด้าน ผนังแต่ละด้าน ก่ออิฐถือปูนอย่างแน่นหนา การถ่ายรูปด้วยเลนส์ปกตินั้นเป็นเรื่องยากมากที่จะเก็บภาพองค์พระและรายละเอียดได้หมด อย่างที่หลายท่านเคยเห็นภาพฐานเขียงและชานุ (เข่า) ขององค์พระถูกตัดไปเนื่องมาจากมุมถ่ายแคบจริงๆ … แต่ THAILAND180º ไม่พลาดทั้งแสงเงา มุม แนวดิ่งและแนวนอนแบบ ๑๘๐ องศา สมกับชื่อหนังสือเลยทีเดียว
Now that I had a few pictures that I liked in my camera we relaxed our pace somewhat and explored some other areas off the beaten path. If you really like your ruins in a more aged and less reconstructed form, I suggest that you do the same. The sun was getting too high for great photos, and the tour buses were bringing in hundreds of tourists, so we headed back to our hotel to process and examine our images.

The Magic Starts at Dusk
We returned to the park in the late afternoon and searched for evening locations. The park stays open until 9PM and at 7PM, they light up some of the ruins. I knew that there was a very unique and graceful walking Buddha image at Wat Sa Si, so we spent the first evening in that area. There is a very short “magic” time when there is still a glow from the sun, just as the lights come on, and you’ll miss it if you aren’t prepared! We made the image above and below, during this time. Afterwards, the sky grew dark quickly and after making a few more images, we scouted around for a few more photos on the next day.
I hope you get a chance to visit this park and have the luxury of being able to spend some time exploring other areas. We had so many good images on the first day, that we were able to relax and be tourists on the second day. There are light shows and other special events at this park throughout the year and it can become jam-packed. If you don’t like crowds, do a little research before you plan your trip.

…เย็นๆ กลับมาเดินเที่ยวต่อ… พอแดดเริ่มคล้อยเราก็กลับมาที่อุทยานฯ เดินมาชมจุดที่เขาว่ามีทัศนียภาพที่สวยงามอีกจุดหนึ่ง นั่นคือ วัดสระศรี ตั้งอยู่ทางทิศตะวันตกเฉียงเหนือของวัดมหาธาตุ อยู่บริเวณกลางสระน้ำที่มีขนาดใหญ่ ชื่อว่า ตระพังตระกวน เมื่อเดินข้ามสะพานข้ามตระพังมาจะพบกับพระพุทธรูปปางลีลาอยู่เบื้องข้างของวัด พระอิริยาบถยืนยกส้นพระบาทขวาสูงขึ้นจากพื้น ปลายพระบาทยังจดอยู่กับพื้น อยู่ในท่าจะก้าวเพื่อทรงพระดำเนิน พระหัตถ์ขวาห้อยอยู่ในท่าไกว พระหัตถ์ซ้ายยกเสมอพระอุระ ตั้งฝ่าพระหัตถ์ป้องไปเบื้องหน้าเป็นกิริยาเดินเมื่อคราวเสด็จพระพุทธดำเนินลงจากดาวดึงส์เทวโลก ยิ่งเมื่ออุทยานเปิดไฟส่องยิ่งดูสวยงามจับตาจริงๆ
ภายในบริเวณวัดมีเจดีย์ประธานทรงลังกา ด้านหน้าวิหารขนาดใหญ่ประดิษฐานพระพุทธรูปปูนปั้นปางมารวิชัย และเจดีย์ขนาดเล็กศิลปะศรีวิชัยผสมลังกาอยู่ทางด้านทิศใต้ อีกทั้งยังมีซุ้มประดิษฐานพระพุทธรูปอยู่รอบทั้ง ๔ ทิศ และเราก็ไม่พลาดที่จะเก็บภาพขณะที่อุทยานฯ สาดแสงไฟยามพลบค่ำ ก่อนท้องฟ้าจะมืดดำ ทำให้ภาพยิ่งได้อารมณ์ของความสุขสงบในดินแดนอาณาจักรสุโขทัย
หากท่านใดไปเที่ยวชมอุทยานฯ ในช่วงเทศกาลวันลอยกระทง ยามเช้าตรู่เชิญร่วมตักบาตรรับรุ่งอรุณแห่งความสุข และพิธีเผาเทียนในช่วงค่ำ รวมทั้งชมการแสดงพลุ ตะไล ไฟเพนียง และงานแสดง แสง สี เสียงตำนานเมืองสุโขทัยด้วย มีสีสันและสนุกสนาน เพลิดเพลินกับบรรยากาศย้อนยุคกันเลยทีเดียว
