Koh Mak Vs Koh Chang
Trat is a province in the eastern region of Thailand, where it shares a border with Cambodia. It also has 52 small islands with beautiful private beaches that are a perfect vacation hideaway. Here, a deep breath of the fresh, ozone laden air, along with the clear blue sky gives one a natural high. The sand is white, soft and fine, and the calm, clear water is teeming with colorful tropical fish that play hide and seek, among the coral. Koh Mak is less crowded than Koh Chang, the larger and more popular island, so we headed there. Sure it’s a bit further, but it is smaller, more private, and if possible, more beautiful. เรานั่งเรือตรงไปเกาะหมาก เพราะต้องการความสงบและสัมผัสกับธรรมชาติจริงๆ แล้วที่นี่ก็ไม่ทำให้ผิดหวัง พร้อมด้วยที่พักส่วนตัวสุดหรูริมทะเลและสิ่งอำนวยความสะดวกที่มีครบเกินคาด หย่อนกระเป๋าแล้วพร้อมลุย!!

When to Go
Only four months out of the year are suitable for a visit to the islands of Trat, due to the long monsoon season from the southwestern wind. Usually between December and March. We had waited a long time for the right conditions and were looking forward to a week of snorkeling and exploring the beaches around the islands. The photo above shows our tour boat and its captain!

Koh Kham Rocks
One island that we really loved was Koh Kham, which has even softer white sand and sand dunes, when the tide is low, along many black volcanic rocks. Sure there once was a volcano here, but that was a long, long time ago. These rocks are what make Koh Kham popular with photographers, as they rise up out of the white sand and turquoise sea, with the backdrop of a deep blue sky.
โว๊ะ… ขุ่นพระ! ทรายขาวละเอียดขนาดนี้ แล้วทำไมมีหินก้อนดำมาตั้งเด่นอยู่บนเกาะขามล่ะเนี่ย … นักธรณีวิทยาได้สันนิษฐานว่า เมื่อหลายร้อยล้านปีก่อนบริเวณนี้ได้เคยเป็นปล่องภูเขาไฟมาก่อน จนถึงวันนี้ก็เหลือแต่เพียงร่องรอยหินภูเขาไฟสีดำทมึนที่ตั้งกระจัดกระจายอยู่ตามชายหาดและบริเวณรอบเกาะขาม อันเป็นเสน่ห์อย่างหนึ่งของเกาะนี้ แล้วยังมีปลาสีสันสวยงามมาอาศัยว่ายเวียนมากมาย ส่วนเจ้าหินก้อนนี้ตั้งอยู่บนสันทรายขาวที่ทอดยาว โดยเฉพาะในช่วงน้ำลงมากจะเห็นสันทรายยาวออกไปไกลจนเกือบเชื่อมถึงเกาะหมากเลยทีเดียว

A Chance Meeting with a Squid Fishing Boat
While sightseeing on our boat, we saw this colorful squid fishing boat that was returning from a night of fishing. At my request, and with permission from the squid boat’s captain, we circled around it, almost hitting the boom-arm as we passed under it! Afterward, the captain gave us a huge bag of squid, which we barbecued on a nearly deserted beach.

Koh Rayang to Relax between Relaxing
While on another island tour, we stopped at Koh Rayang. Although this is a private beach, they allowed us to stop by, have a couple of cold beers and relax. The sea was very calm here, and it was hard to extract us from the chairs to continue our tour. Come on, have a seat and join us!

Gotta Buy a Ngob
Finally, it was time to go back to the mainland, 🙁 so we waved goodbye and headed for Laem Ngob port. In Thai, Ngob means hat and the small town lived up to its name! The stores nearby were filled with various shaped hats that were different from any other part of Thailand. Each shape had a different purpose; the one that looks like a wok is for fishermen, the pointy hat is worn by farmers. Although the locals still wear them, they are very popular with tourists who buy them for decorating a wall or as a lamp shade. We spent some time finding the perfect one, and it is now living in our Bangkok home.
I guess you can see why the Tourism Authority of Thailand picked Trat as one of the “12 Cities…You Can’t Say No (To)” in its latest campaign, “Fall in Love with Thailand” for 2015
