Nan, Thailand – A Must See Province!

Start with Wat Ming Mueang
Nan, a small province in the northern Thailand, is one of the “12 Cities…You Can’t Say No (To)” in TAT’s latest campaign, “Fall in Love with Thailand” for 2015. Here, we discovered some magnificent art and friendly people.
Wat Ming Mueang is in the city center of Nan and has amazing white clay bas-relief sculptures. The original temple was built in 1857 and abandoned for more than a hundred years. In 1984, the people and their governor helped donate money to renovate after a big flood ruined the temple and the city pillar in the temple compound. This new ubosot was created by Lanna artists and the original Buddha image was reinstalled inside. Surrounding the image are mural paintings, created by local artists, which show the lifestyle of the Nan people.

“น่าน” หนึ่งในเมืองต้องห้าม (พลาด) ซึ่งในอดีตเป็นนครรัฐเล็กๆ ปรากฏนามว่า “นันทบุรี” และต่อมาเป็นส่วนหนึ่งของอาณาจักรล้านนา แล้วเราก็ออกเดินไปค้นพบความงามอลังการในจังหวัดน้อยๆ ที่เงียบสงบ ผู้คนเป็นมิตร ยิ้มแย้มแจ่มใส ณ เมืองน่านแห่งนี้ …
วัดมิ่งเมือง เดิมเป็นวัดร้าง มีเสาหลักเมืองที่เป็นท่อนซุงขนาดใหญ่สองคนโอบ พบที่ซากวิหาร ในราวปี ๒๔๐๐ เจ้าอนันตวรฤทธิเดช เจ้าครองนครน่านสถาปนาวัดใหม่ ตั้งชื่อว่า วัดมิ่งเมือง ตามชื่อที่เรียกเสาหลักเมืองว่า เสามิ่งเมือง ต่อมาปี ๒๕๒๗ ได้มีการรื้อถอนและสร้างอุโบสถหลังใหม่เป็นแบบล้านนาร่วมสมัย สร้างเสร็จเมื่อปี พ.ศ. ๒๕๔๐ ซึ่งการก่อสร้างตัวอาคารฝีมือสล่า (ช่าง) พื้นบ้านเมืองน่าน ลวดลายปฏิมากรรมปูนปั้นโดยสล่าสกุลช่างเชียงแสนโบราณ ภายในอุโบสถได้ทำการเขียนภาพจิตรกรรมฝาผนังเป็นเรื่องราวประวัติศาสตร์ความเป็นมาของเมืองน่าน เริ่มตั้งแต่สมัยพญาภูคาเจ้าเมืองน่านองค์ปฐมตั้งอยู่เมือง ณ เมืองย่าง (ปัจจุบันอยู่ในเขตอำเภอปัว) มาจนถึงสมัยเจ้ามหาพรหมสุรธาดา เจ้าผู้ครองนครน่านองค์สุดท้าย และประดิษฐานพระประธานองค์เดิมที่คู่มากับวัดตั้งแต่แรกเริ่ม

The City Pillar Shrine
Throughout Thailand, many cities have a City Pillar Shrine, a custom that dates back to ancient times. These shrines were located near the seat of power of kings or chiefs and are still very important today. Within the pillar resides a deity who protects the city and its inhabitants. These were ritual centers for fertility rites which ensured that the farmlands would yield abundant crops and that the city dwellers would bear healthy children. In modern times, these shrines are quite stunning, and the one in the compound of Wat Ming Mueang is no exception! Here the pillar is enshrined in a four-sided Thai style pavilion, in front of the ubosot. The pillar is 3 meters high and crowned with a four-face image of Brahma, which represents the four states of mind, which are sought by Buddhists: loving kindness, compassion, empathy, and equanimity. Above the pillar is a diagram of the planets orbiting in the heavens.
ในบริเวณวัดยังเป็นที่ประดิษฐานเสาหลักเมือง ซึ่งแต่เดิมเรียกว่า “เสามิ่งเมือง” เดิมเป็นไม้สักทองขนาดใหญ่ สูงประมาณ ๓ เมตร ลักษณะเป็นเสาทรงกลมส่วนหัวเสาเกลาเป็นดอกบัวตูมฝังไว้กับพื้นที่ดินโดยตรง ไม่มีศาลาหรืออาคารครอบแต่อย่างใด สันนิษฐานว่าอาจจะสร้างขึ้นในสมัยเจ้าอัตถวรปัญโญ เจ้าผู้ครองนครน่าน
เมื่อปี พ.ศ. ๒๕๐๖ ได้เกิดน้ำท่วมใหญ่ กระแสน้ำในแม่น้ำน่าน ได้ไหลบ่าทะลักเข้าท่วมถึงตัวเสาหลักเมือง ทำให้เสาหลักเมืองโค่นล้มลง ทางวัดมิ่งเมืองพร้อมด้วยชาวบ้านได้ร่วมกันก่อเสาหลักเมืองน่านจำลองด้วยการก่ออิฐถือปูนขึ้นในสถานที่เดิม โดยทำเป็นเสาก่อด้วยอิฐถือปูน ก่อฐานสี่เหลี่ยมลดหลั่นเป็นชั้น ตัวเสาสูงประมาณ ๑ เมตรครึ่ง ฐานสูงประมาณ ๑ เมตรเศษ ทาด้วยปูนขาว และสร้างศาลไทยจัตุรมุขขึ้นครอบ ได้นำเอาเสาหลักเมืองน่านต้นเดิมที่โค่นล้มลงนั้น มาเกลาแต่งใหม่และสลักหัวเสาเป็นพรหมสี่หน้า
สักการะเสาหลักเมืองครบทั้งสี่ทิศ เพื่อความเป็นสิริมงคลแล้ว จึงเดินชมความงดงามอุโบสถล้านนาของวัดมิ่งเมือง ที่คนน่านภาคภูมิใจว่า ช่างสล่าน่าน เก่งไม่แพ้ใครในล้านนา

The Beetles
Driving into Nan, I noticed this huge Rhinoceros Beetle statue by the side of the road. With further research I discovered a whole culture in the northern and northeastern Thailand, that raises, fights and preserves these large beetles. This time of year, a new group of beetles will hatch and be collected from their homes, deep in the jungle. The beetles will be kept as pets until they grow larger, and will have their chance to fight other beetles in a contest.
In the contest, the first beetle to raise the other beetle by its horns, or knocks his opponent off of the fighting area wins. The beetle champions are kept as pets until they die, and are then preserved by taxidermists. Losers are released. This is all a lot more exciting than it sounds and leaves the village taxidermist with more work than he can handle.

“กว่าง” เป็นด้วงหรือแมลงปีกแข็งชนิดหนึ่ง มันสามารถใช้เขาของมันยกสิ่งของที่มีนำหนักมากกว่าตัวมันเองได้ถึง ๒๐ กว่าเท่าของน้ำหนักตัว
ในภาคเหนือและภาคอีสาน นิยมเลี้ยงเป็นสัตว์เลี้ยง และมีการชนกว่าง ซึ่งการต่อสู้ของกว่างนั้นไม่ดุเดือดจนถึงขั้นบาดเจ็บหรือล้มตายเหมือนสัตว์อื่น แค่ประลองกำลังกัน และส่วนมากก็เลี้ยงกันจนกว่างนั้นตายไป สำหรับตัวที่สวยๆ หรือตัวที่เจ้าของรักมากเมื่อกว่างตายก็จะนำไปสตั๊ฟฟ์เพื่อเก็บไว้ค่ะ
