Thai Crepe Vendor
Thai crepes
In the photo above, a woman is preparing a Thai crepe and adding chocolate bits before folding. Stuffing may also include chocolate sauce, custard cream, pandanus custard, blueberry jam, raspberry jam, marmalade, chicken or quail eggs, shrimp paste, dried “hairy” pork, ham, hot dogs, … etc. I must say this vendor seems to have it all, and nicely presented, too! Crepe vendors are somewhat common all over the country and are easily found by looking for a long line of children in their school uniforms.

Isaan Sausage
Isaan sausage
We can find the Isaan sausage, or Sai Krog, cart on almost every street inside & outside of Bangkok, but the good ones have all the right accouterments, including cabbage, ginger and chilies. These sausages are often stuffed with pork, rice and garlic. One or two is a snack; more than that is a meal! This cart also has grilled northern sausages on the stick, which we talked about in our northern Thai post.

Kabob Vendor
Thai Grilled Kabobs
From here, we were drawn across the street, to follow the smell of another favorite BBQ food, where we found a couple working on the Thai Grilled Kabobs. These are some big sticks of Kabob, bigger than usual and it looked clean and fresh. We’ve tried some and found the meat was very tender and tasty, the pineapple was sweet and the green chili was hot and spicy. They had choices of chicken, beef, or pork. This was my favorite and I still remember their taste fondly!

Frying Grasshoppers and Baby Frogs
Ah, it’s the Other Protein
Far from others, we saw this man frying some hot hot stuff, so we walked over to check it out, and found these!
He was frying grasshoppers and small green frogs, pausing only for a moment to give his best “Bad boy look” for a photograph, before continuing. His wife was selling a variety of bugs such as silkworms, grasshoppers, small green frogs, bamboo worms, mole crickets, and bees, to name just a few. We bought some fried silk worms and 2 bags of bamboo worms for midnight snacks. We, I mean “I”, also sampled the frogs, which tasted something like bacon, and the grasshoppers which tasted like shrimp. I think most people would enjoy the taste of these delicacies if they could get past the fact that they’re eating bugs!

And every year on December 25th through January 1st, Phitsanulok has a food festival extravaganza which is held from December 25 – 31, at the Suan Chom Nan Plaza, and an alms offering event on January 1st, to welcome the New Year. Great care has been taken to select only the best food Phitsanulok has to offer for its visitors, under the “Clean Food Good Taste” slogan. Moreover, the event features other local foods from as many as 100 popular restaurants from nearby provinces, as well as OTOP products which are also sold at this venue.
