Petchabun- A Jewel in the Mountains of Thailand

Petchabun is one of the “12 Cities…You Can’t Say No (To)” in TAT’s latest campaign, “Fall in Love with Thailand” for 2015. Today, Phetchabun is a province with rich tourism potential. Its climate is pleasant due to the mountainous and forested areas, and it has a rich history dating back more than 1,400 years.

Wat Phra That Pha Sorn Kaew, is a quiet and peaceful temple and meditation center which sits on an 830 Meter peak, about five hours by car north of Bangkok. This relatively new temple is accessible only by a private car or tour and is off the radar to most tourist–exactly the type of site we love to visit. The interior of the temple is somewhat austere, which is befitting of a temple serious about meditation practice, but I found a beautiful pavilion in the garden that provided a view of the temple. Shoes must be removed before ascending the stairs to the temple, and long pants and respectful dress are a must.

“The land of Crops and Foods”
In addition to it’s rich history and fertile soil, Petchabun also has many natural attractions, including forest covered mountains and waterfalls that help create a climate that is somewhat cool, most of the year. The nickname of the province means “The land of crops and foods”, due to its fertile soil.
เพชรบูรณ์เดิมมีชื่อว่า “เพชรบุระ” หรือ “พืชปุระ” อันหมายถึงเมืองแห่งพืชพันธุ์ธัญญาหาร สันนิษฐานว่ามีการสร้างเมืองมาตั้งแต่ยุคสุโขทัย และในสมัยสมเด็จพระนารายณ์มหาราช เมืองนี้ทำหน้าที่เป็นเสมือนกำแพงชั้นนอกเพื่อป้องกันข้าศึกเข้ามารุกรานและเป็นเมืองสำคัญในการเคลื่อนทัพผ่าน ต่อมาถูกยกฐานะขึ้นเป็นจังหวัดในสมัยรัชกาลที่ ๖ … ในยุคสมัยหนึ่ง เพชรบูรณ์กลายเป็นสมรภูมิสู้รบระหว่างพรรคคอมมิวนิสต์กับรัฐบาลไทย โดยเฉพาะในบริเวณเขาค้อและภูหินร่องกล้า ปัจจุบันได้รับการพัฒนาเป็นแหล่งท่องเที่ยวที่สำคัญของจังหวัดเพชรบูรณ์

It’s Sweet Tamarind Time in Petchabun!
The “Petchabun Sweet Tamarind Fair” runs around last week of January, at Petchabun’s provincial athletic field. Sweet tamarind is mainly grown in Petchabun, due to it’s cooler temperatures and environment. In fact, the farmers of this province earn lots of money from this crop, and it is well known throughout the Kingdom.
Great, so what is a tamarind, you might ask? After all, this tree which is native to Sudan is grown only in tropical regions. It yields fruit in hard, brown pods that encase sweet or sour, fleshy pulp surrounding seeds. The taste of the sweet tamarinds of this province reminds me of dates, but the more widely grown sour tamarinds that are used for cooking and even polish for metal, are a bit too sour for me.
Due to a painful spider bite on my index finger, I’m going to end the story here, with this reminder: Don’t put your fingers where you wouldn’t put your face.
เพชรบูรณ์มีพื้นที่ปลูกมะขามหวาน นับหมื่นไร่ ปลูกมากที่สุดในอำเภอหล่มสัก และอำเภอเมือง พันธุ์ที่นิยมปลูกกันมาก ได้แก่ พันธุ์ประกายทอง หรือ ตาแป๊ะ พันธุ์สีทอง (พันธุ์นายหยัด) พันธุ์ศรีชมพู พันธุ์ขันตี พันธุ์หมื่นจง พันธุ์อินทผาลัม พันธุ์ปากดุก พันธุ์นายเบื้อง เป็นต้น และที่สำคัญมะขามหวานจะออกผลพร้อมเก็บเกี่ยวรับประทานช่วงเดือนมกราคม โดยช่วงสัปดาห์สุดท้ายของเดือนมกราคมของทุกปี ทางจังหวัดจะจัด “งานมะขามหวาน นครบาลเพชรบูรณ์” ให้ทุกท่านไปเที่ยว-ชม-ชิม-ช้อปอย่างเพลิดเพลิน
***มะขามธรรมดานั้นมีรสเปรี้ยว เนื่องจากมีเปอร์เซ็นต์น้ำตาลเพียง 10-30% แต่มะขามหวานสนิทหรือหวานจัด(ตามธรรมชาติ)นั้น มีเปอร์เซ็นต์น้ำตาลมากกว่า 50% ดังนั้น ผู้ป่วยโรคเบาหวานไม่ควรบริโภคเกิน 1-2 ฝักต่อวันนะคะ
