Buriram: City of Happiness Atop a Volcano!

Has anyone heard of “volcanoes” in Thailand? … There’s a province in the northeast of Thailand that is well known as the extinct volcano town, and nicknamed “The City of Happiness! It is Buriram, at the south end of the Khorat Plateau which has several extinct volcanoes, and is one of the “12 Cities…You Can’t Say No (To)” in TAT’s latest campaign, “Fall in Love with Thailand” for 2015.
One of the most popular attractions in Buriram is Phanom Rung Historical Park, which rests 1,320 feet high on an extinct (we hope) volcano. Phanom Rung, a Khmer temple dedicated to Shiva, was carefully restored over a period of 15 years and it is a stunning masterpiece! I’ll throw in an important travel tip here. Get a local bus as close to the park as you can and hire a local motorcycle taxi to take you the rest of the way. Be sure to get his phone number, so he can come back and pick you up later!

บนยอดภูเขาไฟสูงที่ดับสนิทแล้ว หนึ่งในหกลูกสำคัญของจังหวัดบุรีรัมย์ แสดงพลังความยิ่งใหญ่แห่งเทวสถาน “ปราสาทหินพนมรุ้ง” — ปราสาทหินพนมรุ้งเคยเป็นเทวสถานในลัทธิไศวะ ซึ่งนับถือพระศิวะเป็นเทพเจ้าสูงสุด ดังนั้นเขาพนมรุ้งจึงเปรียบเสมือนเขาไกรลาสที่ประทับของพระศิวะ ตั้งอยู่บนยอดเขาพนมรุ้งสูง ๑,๓๒๐ ฟุตจากระดับน้ำทะเล แผนผังของปราสาทหินพนมรุ้งได้ถูกออกแบบให้มีลักษณะเป็นแนวเส้นตรง และเน้นความสำคัญเข้าหาจุดศูนย์กลาง นั่นคือปราสาทประธานซึ่งหันหน้าไปทางทิศตะวันออก ที่บริเวณหน้าบันของปราสาทประธานนี้เองที่มีภาพจำหลัก “ทับหลังนารายณ์บรรทมสินธุ์”

Once at the park, you’re in for in for a steep climb, with very short steps. This was all part of the Khmer strategy to make attacks difficult, and if you have big clodhoppers like I do, you’ll find the assent challenging too. As you climb higher, you’ll pass over two five-headed Nagas, or mythical snake guardians, before coming to a third bridge that is shown in the photo above. Like most Hindu temples, it faces east and is best seen early in the morning. Above each entrance is a stone carving, or lintel, which depicts a Hindu story. The most famous lintel, known as Phra Nari, was stolen from the temple in the 1960’s and somehow ended up on display at the Chicago Institute of Art in the USA. It was finally returned in 1988, but not before there was a huge public outcry in Thailand. This led a rock band named Carabao to write a song with the funniest line ever: “Take back your Michael Jackson, just give us back our Phra Nari!”
สะพานนาคราช อันเป็นทางเดินทั้งสองข้างประดับด้วยเสามียอดคล้ายดอกบัวตูมเรียกว่าเสานาง เรียง จำนวนข้างละ ๓๕ ต้น ทอดตัวไปยังสะพานนาคราช ซึ่งเป็นผังกากบาทยกพื้นสูง ราวสะพานทำเป็นลำตัวพญานาค ๕ เศียร สะพานนาคราชนี้ตามความเชื่อเป็นทางที่เชื่อมระหว่างโลกมนุษย์กับเทพเจ้า สิ่งที่น่าสนใจคือ จุดกึ่งกลางสะพาน มีภาพจำหลักรูปดอกบัวแปดกลีบ อาจหมายถึงเทพประจำทิศทั้งแปดในศาสนาฮินดู หรือเป็นจุดที่ผู้มาทำการบูชาตั้งจิตอธิษฐาน

Wat Khao Angkhan is about 20 kilometers from Phanom Rung, and also sits on an extinct volcano. This temple’s architectural style is a modern take on Khmer style, but I had a very strange, eerie feeling as I explored the grounds. Inside of the temple are murals depicting the life of Buddha that were painted by Burmese artists and have captions in English. There is also a Buddha image. Nothing strange about that, but sandstone markers found around the temple, date back to the Dvaravati era in the 8th or 9th century. Perhaps in the past, the temple had other “purposes” which may account for my feeling that bad things had happened here in the past. On the other hand, maybe it’s just me, as the Lonely Planet guidebook refers to it as a “peaceful temple”. บริเวณวัดเป็นปากปล่องภูเขาไฟ คาดว่าเคยเป็นที่ตั้งของโบราณสถานสมัยทวารวดีในยุคที่ขอมเรืองอำนาจในอาณาดินแดนนี้ เนื่องจากมีการค้นพบใบเสมาหินทรายสลักภาพบุคคล สถูป ดอกบัว และธรรมจักร ศิลปะสมัยทวารวดีช่วงราวพุทธศตวรรษที่ ๑๓-๑๔ อยู่เป็นจำนวนมาก และเชื่อกันว่าน่าจะสร้างในยุคเดียวกับปราสาทหินเขาพนมรุ้ง ภายในอุโบสถมีภาพจิตรกรรมฝาผนังเรื่องราวพุทธชาดก โดยฝีมือจิตรกรชาวพม่า และยังเขียนบรรยายเรื่องราวพุทธชาดกเป็นภาษาอังกฤษอีกด้วย

Mueang Tam Stone Sanctuary, in Buri Ram, is a great place to pass some time, or maybe have a picnic. Very little is known about this Khmer site and the more the site is excavated, the more questions are raised. Never mind! With its beautiful sandstone and laterite construction, four large pools with Naga sculptures, and a few lintels depicting Hindu deities, this is one of most photogenic Khmer sites in Southeast Asia.
