Chainat: An Off the Beaten Path Gem!
Chainat is a small province in Thailand that sits along the Chao Phraya river and was founded in the 12th century. Most of the people in the province are rice farmers. If not for our THAILAND 180º project, we might have overlooked the province, which would be a shame, since it’s full of unique sites, and wildlife.
As we were driving into Chainat, we noticed many large bird sculptures that had a wonderful texture. I wanted to stop, but our driver and my wife told me that we were headed for the Chainat Bird Park, which was loaded with these bird statues. Once at the park, a guide told us the story of how these statues were created. Back in 1985, it seems that the government had a campaign to rid the rice fields of pesky rat-like animals called voles. The clever locals decided to use the plentiful rice straw, that was left after harvesting the rice, to make huge bird scarecrows. This led the governor to the idea of making large bird statues from the straw, to draw attention to the bird park as well. Soon this grew into a local tradition, that in turn became a festival with contests for the best bird sculptures, parades, local food, etc. This year’s festival will be held on February 13 – 22.
ชัยนาท เป็นเมืองยุทธศาสตร์ที่สำคัญ เคยใช้เป็นที่ตั้งทัพรับศึกพม่าหลายครั้งในสมัยกรุงศรีอยุธยาและมีชัยทุกครั้งไป จึงเป็นที่มาของชื่อเมือง ต่อมาในรัชสมัยพระบาทสมเด็จพระจุลจอมเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัว ได้ย้ายตัวเมืองจากบริเวณแหลมยาง มาตั้งตรงฝั่งซ้ายแม่น้ำเจ้าพระยา อันเป็นเมืองชัยนาทในปัจจุบัน
คนภาคกลาง รวมถึงชาวชัยนาทมีอาชีพทำนาเป็นส่วนใหญ่ ภูมิปัญญาพื้นบ้านที่เราคุ้นตาเวลานั่งรถผ่านทุ่งนา คือ หุ่นไล่กา ทำหน้าที่ไล่นก เช่น นกกระจาบ นกกระจิบ นกกระจอก และสารพัดนก เพื่อปกป้องผลผลิตในไร่นา .. แต่พอไล่นกไปแล้วใครจะไล่จับหนูในนาล่ะ? .. หลังประสบปัญหาหนูนาชุกชุมทำลายพืชผล ในปีพ.ศ. ๒๕๒๘ จึงมีการคิดนำฟางที่ไม่ได้ใช้ประโยชน์เหล่านี้มาประดิษฐ์เป็น “หุ่นฟางนก” นานาชนิด นำไปติดตั้งในทุ่งนาเพื่อไล่หนู และพัฒนาให้มีความละเอียด มีสีสันสวยงาม จนถึงมีการประกวดหุ่นฟางนก และได้รับการตอบรับเป็นอย่างดีจนนับเป็นสัญลักษณ์ของจังหวัดชัยนาท ซึ่งชัดเจนมากขณะที่เรานั่งรถเข้าเมืองชัยนาทจะเป็นนกหลากหลายชนิดที่ประดิษฐ์จากหุ่นฟางประดับบริเวณเกาะกลางถนน ช่างภาพของเราอยากจะจอดรถลงไปถ่ายภาพซะให้ได้เลย สุดท้ายก็ไปถ่ายภาพที่สวนนกดีกว่า
Rice Straw Bird Sculpture
We started to walk around the bird park, which covers 10 acres and has over 200 species of birds and saw many gigantic bird sculptures that were quite impressive, but difficult to photograph with my fisheye lens. There were many other birds singing and taunting me from the trees, along with many peacocks strutting around. I started to feel discouraged, and after capturing the image above, we headed for the freshwater aquarium that was also in the park. Having spent many days traveling on the Chao Phraya river in Bangkok, and eating all kinds of fish from its water, I was really curious to see an exhibit of the fish from the river. There were many tanks full of all kinds of fish and even some freshwater prawns scuttling along the bottom. I was really impressed with the displays and landscaping of the tanks! It was interesting seeing how the fish and other creatures interacted with each other, and soon a couple of hours had passed by. Below is a view of one of the larger tanks that really made me feel like I was scuba diving. The fish were very active and it took many exposures to make a photograph with an interesting composition.
เมื่อมาเยือนชัยนาท ก็ต้องแวะไป สวนนกชัยนาท อันเป็นสถานที่ท่องเที่ยวและอนุรักษ์นกที่มีกรงนกขนาดใหญ่ที่สุดในเอเชีย มีนกกว่า ๒๐๐ สายพันธุ์ โดยปล่อยให้นกชนิดต่างๆ อยู่ตามธรรมชาติ ที่สวนนกนั้นมีหุ่นฟางนกตัวใหญ่มาก ถ่ายภาพไป ฟังเสียงนกไป อินกับบรรยากาศจริงๆ นอกจากนกนานาชนิดแล้วภายในสวนนกยังมี อาคารแสดงพันธุ์ปลาลุ่มแม่น้ำเจ้าพระยา ที่รวบรวมปลาน้ำจืดพันธ์ุต่างๆ มากกว่า ๙๐ ชนิด ทั้งปลาหายาก/สูญพันธุ์ ปลาเศรษฐกิจ ปลาอันตราย เช่น ปลาเสือตอ ปลาตองลาย ปลาเสือสุมาตรา ปลากดหิน เป็นต้น แม้อาคารแสดงจะไม่ใหญ่มากแต่น่าตื่นตาตื่นใจมากโดยเฉพาะในอุโมงค์แก้วที่มีปลาน้ำจืดสายพันธ์ุยักษ์ อย่างปลาบึกที่ได้ชื่อว่า “ฉลามน้ำจืด” … อาคารพันธุ์ปลาเปิดให้เข้าชมทุกวัน ตั้งแต่ ๐๘.๐๐ – ๑๗.๐๐ น. ต้องไปชมกันให้ได้ จะได้เห็นปลาต่างๆ ที่อาศัยในแม่น้ำเจ้าพระยาของเรานั้นมีหลากหลายมากมายกว่าที่เราคิดจริงๆ
Freshwater Aquarium in the Chainat Bird Park
After leaving the park, we headed for the festival grounds, only to discover that the parade and contests had taken place before our arrival, so we decided to wander around and have lunch. Like most Thai festivals, there was great local food, and after a bit we decided to try the barbecued chicken and chicken liver on a stick. This was the first time I had seen a smokestack and fan to clear the smoke and made the photograph below. The taste was excellent, and the area was smoke-free. I’m still thinking of how I can make something like this for our backyard cooking. We even tried to find a barbecue with a similar attachment at the festival, but instead ended up buying a small smoker that was made from reclaimed steel drums, with bike chains for hinges. งานมหกรรมหุ่นฟางนกและงานกาชาดจังหวัดชัยนาท ที่จัดขึ้นเป็นประจำทุกปีเพื่อสืบสานประเพณี วัฒนธรรมและภูมิปัญญาท้องถิ่น มีการประกวดหุ่นฟางนกขนาดใหญ่ การจำหน่ายผลิตภัณฑ์ชุมชนและท้องถิ่น ผลิตภัณฑ์ของกลุ่มแม่บ้านเกษตรกร และการแสดงต่างๆ โดยในปีนี้จะจัดในระหว่างวันที่ ๑๓ – ๒๒ กุมภาพันธ์ ๒๕๕๘ ณ บริเวณสนามกีฬาเฉลิมพระเกียรติฯและเขื่อนเรียงหิน หน้าศาลากลางจังหวัดชัยนาท … เดินเพลินเลย เดินชม เดินชิม และเดินช้อป จนช่างภาพของเรามาสะดุดตาต้องใจกับร้านไก่ย่าง เราก็นึกว่าหิว … โถๆๆ เค้าอยากได้เตาบาร์บีคิวนี่เอง จนต้องโทรตามพี่คนขับรถให้มารับ ณ จุดที่ใกล้ที่สุด เพราะคุณช่างภาพของเราซื้อเตาบาร์บีคิว! .. อ่านไม่ผิดค่ะ “เตาบาร์บีคิว” จริงๆ เพราะอีกด้านหนึ่งของงาน มีนิทรรศการออกร้านขายสินค้าภูมิปัญญาไทย มีเตาบาร์บีคิวแบบถังน้ำมัน ไร้ควันและประหยัดพลังงาน เพราะออกแบบมาให้ใส่ถ่านด้านข้างทั้สองข้างคือด้านซ้ายและด้านขวา เพื่อไม่ให้น้ำมันจากเนื้อสัตว์ที่ต้องการย่างตกลงไปบนถ่านและเกิดควันและไฟลุกมาเผาบนเนื้อสัตว์อันก่อให้เกิดสารก่อมะเร็ง โดยนำถาด/ภาชนะมารองรับน้ำมันจากการย่างไว้ใต้ตะแกรง ซึ่งสามารถนำไปใช้ประโยชน์อื่นๆได้อีก และเตาแบบนี้จะมีฝาปิดและปล่องระบายควัน อีกทั้งเจาะเป็นช่องขนาดพอประมาณด้านบนเพื่อเปิดดูได้ โดยฝาปิดส่วนนี้เพื่อป้องกันความร้อนรั่วไหลออกไป ทำให้อาหารสุกเร็วขึ้น ไม่เปลืองถ่าน ทั้งยังช่วยลดก๊าซคาร์บอนมอนนอกไซค์และลดการเกิดภาวะโลกร้อนอีกด้วย .. ตามไปดูภาพที่>http://on.fb.me/1Dba0dJ
Thai BBQ Chick and Chicken Liver
While driving through Chainat, we passed several roadside stands selling char-broiled Voles. Voles are rat-like creatures that live in the rice paddies. They are very clean animals and vegetarians for the most part. Why let protein go to waste? It’s a shame I didn’t get to sample one, but we had just finished lunch and my wife and the driver didn’t want to help me eat one. Luckily for me, this is a common food in the up-country areas and I’m sure I’ll get my chance someday. Probably tastes like chicken, anyway.

ระหว่างเดินทางกลับจากชัยนาท เราผ่านร้านค้าข้างทางมากมายเลยจอดรถลงไปดูสักหน่อย หนูย่าง เป็นหนูนาย่างนั่นเอง หนูนาไม่เหมือนหนูบ้านนะ พวกหนูนาสะอาดและเป็นมังสวิรัตด้วย คือ พวกมันเป็นสัตว์กินพืชนั่นเอง ช่างภาพของเราเสียดายมากที่ไม่ได้ชิมเพราะเพิ่งทานอาหารเช้ามา ส่วนเราก็ไม่ช่วยชิมหรอกนะคะ พี่คนขับรถก็ไม่เอาด้วยค่ะ คุณช่างภาพเค้าบอกว่าไม่เป็นไร ไว้ค่อยหาโอกาสมาใหม่เพราะอยู่ไม่ไกลจากกรุงเทพเท่าไหร่ รสชาติน่าจะเหมือนไก่เนอะ!
