The Legend of Chedi Kew

No tour of Chiang Mai is complete without a ride in the back of a modified red pick-up truck, or Si Lor Daeng. It’s a great way to cover lots of ground and familiarize yourself with the city. It was during our first tour by si lor dang that we circled around a small white chedi, with a royal symbol on it, in the middle of the road! Why wasn’t this chedi moved within a temple compound? What was the story behind this unusual sight? We couldn’t wait to find out and began our research!
หลายท่านคงเคยไปเชียงใหม่ ราชธานีแห่งอาณาจักรล้านนากันมาแล้ว .. และก็คงไม่พลาดการนั่งรถสี่ล้อแดงเที่ยวรอบเมืองเชียงใหม่ ผ่านกำแพงเมืองเก่าทั้งสี่ทิศและประตูเมืองห้าประตู ทัศนีย์ภาพร่มรื่นด้วยต้นไม้รอบคูเมือง และแน่นอนว่านั่งรถเที่ยววนไปวนมาก็ต้องเคยผ่านหรือเห็นเจดีย์สีขาวๆตั้งอยู่กลางถนน เป็นวงเวียนให้รถวนรอบ สงสัยมั้ยว่าทำไมเจดีย์ไม่ไปสร้างอยู่บริเวณวัด? .. ตรงนี้ก็ไม่มีวัด แล้วทำไมไม่รื้อออกตอนที่ตัดถนน? .. เราไปหาข้อมูลมาจนได้ความว่า นี่คือ “เจดีย์กิ่ว” หรือ หลายคนเรียก “เจดีย์ขาว”
This landmark, known as Chedi Kew, is situated near the Chiang Mai City Municipality and the US consulate. The legend dates back to when Lanna had not yet merged with Siam, and there is no record of who was the king of Lanna at that time, but Chiang Mai was it’s capital city. Once an enemy marched near Chiang Mai and had fought many battles, but couldn’t capture the city. The enemy’s leader had an idea to have a diving competition to see who could stay under water the longest. This was a clever idea, since Chiang Mai is in the north of Thailand and surrounded by mountain and hills, and their people were not good at diving. If Chiang Mai won, the enemy would retreat; but if they lost, the enemy would take over the city. The king of Lanna asked for a qualified volunteer, but three days passed, and no one stepped forward! Eventually, an old man showed up and confirmed that he wanted to compete in the contest.
เจดีย์กิ่ว ตั้งอยู่ตรงสามแยกบริเวณหน้าเทศบาลนครเชียงใหม่ มีตำนานกล่าวสืบต่อกันมาหลากหลาย แต่ตำนานหนึ่งที่น่าเชื่อถือและเล่าขานกันมา โดยเรื่องราวเกิดขึ้นตั้งแต่เมื่อครั้งที่ ล้านนายังไม่ได้รวมกับสยาม และไม่ปรากฏชัดว่าเป็นสมัยไหน แต่ขณะนั้นมีเชียงใหม่เป็นเมืองหลวงของล้านนา มีข้าศึกศัตรูยกทัพมาประชิดเมืองเชียงใหม่ และแม่ทัพฝ่ายข้าศึกมีการประลองกำลังและไหวพริบกัน จนแม่ทัพฝ่ายข้าศึกได้มาท้าประลองแข่งดำน้ำ หากฝ่ายข้าศึกแพ้จะถอยทัพกลับ หากชนะก็จะได้ครองนครเชียงใหม่ เนื่องจากเห็นว่าเมืองเชียงใหม่อยู่ทางตอนเหนือ เป็นคนดอน ไม่ชำนาญเรื่องดำน้ำแน่นอน เจ้าผู้ครองนครในขณะนั้นจึงประกาศหาผู้ที่จะเข้ามาอาสา แต่ก็ไม่มีผู้ใดอาสาเพราะไม่มีใครเชี่ยวชาญการดำน้ำจริงๆ จนในที่สุดก็มีชายสูงอายุคนหนึ่งซึ่งอาศัยอยู่ไร่นานอกเมืองเข้ามาอาสาแข่งขัน ด้วยจิตมุ่งมั่นคิดตอบแทนคุณของบ้านเมือง
The competition was set up at the Ping River, near the chedi’s present day location. Both competitors dove into the river and moments later, the enemy’s man surfaced first. Accepting defeat, the enemy army immediately fled. Chiang Mai had won, BUT the old man still remained under water. The king was amazed at the man’s ability to hold his breath for so long and sent divers into the river to tell the man that he had won the contest. It was then that they learned that the old man had tied himself to a pole under water, and had drowned. They retrieved his body and the king commanded the townsmen to build a chedi to honor the old man for his bravery and dedication protecting the Lanna empire- and it will remain there forever more!
เมื่อถึงกำหนดวันแข่งขัน ณ แม่น้ำปิง ตรงบริเวณอันเป็นที่ตั้งของเจดีย์กิ่วในปัจจุบัน ทั้งสองฝ่ายต่างก็ดำลงไปในน้ำเป็นเวลานาน จนฝ่ายข้าศึกโผล่ขึ้นมาก่อน จึงต้องพ่ายแพ้และถอยทัพกลับไป แต่ชายสูงอายุคนนี้ก็ยังไม่ขึ้นมาจากน้ำเลย นานจนเป็นที่น่าวิตกว่าชายคนนั้นหายไปไหน หรือจมน้ำตายไปแล้ว ก็ไม่เห็นศพลอยขึ้นมา จึงให้คนดำน้ำลงไปดูแล้วพบว่าชายคนนั้นใช้ผ้าขาวม้ามัดตัวเองติดกับเสาหลักใต้น้ำจนจมน้ำตาย ยอมเสียสละตัวเอง เพื่อรักษาศักดิ์ศรีของชาวเชียงใหม่ไว้ เจ้าผู้ครองนครจึงโปรดให้สร้างเจดีย์เพื่อเป็นอนุสรณ์ระลึกถึงการเสียสละที่ยิ่งใหญ่ครั้งนั้นไว้ และปัจจุบันแม้การจราจรในบริเวณนั้นค่อนข้างหนาแน่น แต่เจดีย์ก็ยังคงตั้งตระหง่านอยู่เพื่อเป็นอนุสรณ์แก่ชายคนหนึ่ง ซึ่งสละชีวิตเพื่อรักษาศักดิ์ศรีของชาติบ้านเมือง.
