ONAM FESTIVAL in Kerala, India – เทศกาลโอนัม รัฐเกรละ อินเดีย
The Onam Festival is celebrated all over India in the beginning of the first month of the Malayalam Calendar. In Kerala, Onam is one of the most ancient and largest festivals celebrations of their New Year. All over the state of Kerala, also known as “God’s Own Country”; rituals, dances, music and traditional cuisine mark this harvest festival for ten days. People wear new clothes, decorate their house and make Pookalam (flower carpets) in front of their house to welcome King Mahabali. Special rituals are made at the temples in the early morning and younger members receive blessings and gifts from the elders of the family. During the Onam feast, many kinds of curries, pickles, and sweet payasam are served. Spectacular floats in parades, fireworks, boat races and folk art performances make for a colorful celebration in Kerala, India.
We were really excited to be able to attend the first day of the celebration and captured hundreds of images. It was sunny one minute, and pouring rain the next, which really made it a memorable challenge! Here are some of the highlights of the festival.
เทศกาลโอนัม (Onam) เสมือนเทศกาลขึ้นปีใหม่ตามปฏิทินมาเลยาลัม ที่มีการเฉลิมฉลองกันอย่างยิ่งใหญ่ในรัฐเกรละ (Kerala) ซึ่งอยู่ทางตอนใต้ของประเทศอินเดีย ชาวเกรละจะแต่งกายด้วยเสื้อผ้าใหม่หลากสีสันสวยงาม ไปศาสนสถานในยามเช้าเพื่อประกอบพิธีกรรมทางศาสนาและขอพร จากนั้นก็เยี่ยมเยือนกันญาติพี่น้องและเพื่อนบ้าน มีการมอบของขวัญให้แก่กัน มีการเต้นรำประกอบดนตรีอย่างรื่นเริง รวมทั้งจัดเตรียมอาหารคาว-หวาน อันเป็นสัญลักษณ์บ่งบอกถึงฤดูกาลเก็บเกี่ยว การเฉลิมฉลองนี้จัดขึ้นต่อเนื่องเป็นเวลา ๑๐ วัน ในช่วงเดือนสิงหาคม-กันยายน โดยตำนานของรัฐเกรละนั้นเป็นการฉลองเพื่อต้อนรับการกลับมาของอสุรกษัตริย์นามว่า มหาบาลี (Mahabali) อันเป็นที่รักยิ่งของชนทุกชั้นเนื่องจากยุคสมัยของพระองค์นั้นประชาราษฎร์มีความสุข ชนทุกชั้นมีความเท่าเทียม ไร้อาชญากรรมและคอรัปชั่น ทำให้พระองค์เป็นที่เคารพนับถือและสรรเสริญประดุจเทพ ต่อมาจึงถูกพระวิษณุทดสอบและสุดท้ายพระองค์ก็ผ่านการทดสอบนั้นพร้อมได้รับพรจากพระวิษณุว่าให้กษัตริย์มหาบาลีเป็นที่เคารพรักของประชาชนตลอดไป และแม้มรณาล่วงลับจากโลกมนุษย์ แต่ก็จะได้กลับมาเยี่ยมเยียนแผ่นดินเกรละที่พระองค์รักทุกๆ ปี ปีละครั้งในช่วงเริ่มเดือนชิณกัม (Chingam) เดือนแรกตามปฏิทินมาเลยาลัม ซึ่งก็คือช่วงเทศกาลโอนัมนี้นี่เอง ชาวเกรละจึงจัดงานเฉลิมฉลองรื่นเริงเพื่อต้อนรับการมาเยือนของกษัตริย์มหาบาลี

King Mahabali
No Kerala Onam celebration is complete without an actor portraying King Mahabali. Although he was a descendant of demons, he was a generous king. During his reign, his subjects were happy and his kingdom was free from crime and cast discrimination. He was greatly revered like a god, prompting Lord Vishnu to appear as a Brahmin dwarf and test him. When King Mahabali saw him, he asked the dwarf how he could help him. The dwarf requested a piece of land, and the king said he could have all that he wanted. The dwarf told him he only needed enough land to cover his three steps, so of course, the king promised him he could have his wish. Immediately, the dwarf increased his height dramatically. His first step covered the whole Earth, and his second step covered the whole sky. The dwarf then asked the king where he should take his third step. The king was fearful that the earth would be destroyed and suggested that he step on his head for his last step. When the former dwarf did this, the king was pushed into the ground, all the way to hell! The dwarf then revealed himself as Vishnu and told the king he had passed his test. For this, Vishnu promised that he would always be loved and granted one wish. King Mahabali requested to be able to visit Kerala once a year, during the Chingam month, and this marks the new year and the Onam Festival.

Theyyam is a ritual dance, popular in north Kerala, that incorporates dance, mime, and music to celebrate the rudiments of ancient tribal cultures and worship of heroes and their spirits of ancestors. The vermilion colored headgear and other ornaments are spectacular in sheer size and appearance.

The Mayilattam Dance
The Mayilattam dance is another traditional dance of south India, and its name literally means the dance of a peacock. The performance requires great skill and practice. Peacock feathers are used to decorate the costume and a shimmering headpiece completes the outfit. Luckily I was able to photograph this dancer before the parade, as the dance is quite fast and the movements are rather unpredictable.

Goddess Durga’s image symbolizes power and divinity as well as compassion for her devotees. Her ten arms symbolize that she protects them from all directions. Typically she’s seen holding different weapons in her ten hands along with a lotus flower and conch shell. Each of the weapons holds special significance. The ultimate message that Goddess Durga gives her devotees is that armed with the force of righteousness, we can achieve the victory over all of the demonic forces inside us and reach new spiritual heights to become at one with God.

The Kolam Thullal Dance
Kolam Thullal is a ritual dance form prevalent in south Kerala and is customary in houses and temples of Bhagavathy (a female deity). It is performed in relation with temple festivals and to drive away the bad spirit from “possessed” bodies.

The Pookalam Contest
Pookalam (Flower Carpet) means flower color sketches on the ground. They are intricate and colorful with different tints of flower petals that are arranged on the floor with a sense of tone and blending to welcome their beloved King Mahabali. Kerala people arrange the Pookalam in a traditional circular shaped mandala with multi-tiered colors in their front courtyard. Pookalam competitions are set up in quiet and secret places. We were very fortunate to find one, but still needed special permission to get inside and take photos. There is a time limit for this contest that adds a certain level of stress. At first I was afraid to go stick my lens in their faces, but many graciously called us over to photograph them while working on their masterpieces.
ในช่วงเทศกาลโอนัม ชาวอินเดียจะเก็บกวาดทำความสะอาดบ้านเรือน ตกแต่งบ้านและพื้นหน้าบ้านด้วยกลีบดอกไม้สีสันสดใสโรยเป็นลวดลายแบบมันดาลา (mandala) อย่างสวยงาม และเราสืบทราบมาว่าที่รัฐเกรละมีการจัดแข่งขันประกวด Pookalam ณ ที่แห่งหนึ่ง ซึ่งไม่อนุญาตให้บุคคลภายนอกเข้าไปเพราะต้องใช้สมาธิอย่างมาก เราจึงลองไปด้อมๆ มองๆ อยู่ภายนอกอาคารแล้วส่งยิ้มทักทายก่อนเดินไปขออนุญาตว่าจะเข้าไปแบบเงียบๆ และไม่รบกวนผู้แข่งขัน แต่ทั้งกรรมการและผู้เข้าแข่งขันหลายทีมต่างกวักมือเชิญเราเข้าไปถ่ายรูป เพราะความกดดันลดน้อยลงเนื่องจากทำกันเกือบจะเสร็จแล้ว มีบางทีมที่ยังเคร่งเครียด และบางทีมก็ยังกั๊กทีเด็ดไว้ตอนใกล้หมดเวลา หลายๆ ทีมชี้ชวนให้เราถ่ายรูปกันใหญ่เลยแต่ยังต้องรักษามารยาทไม่ส่งเสียงดังรบกวนทีมที่ยังไม่เสร็จด้วย
