PULIKALI (Tiger Dance) in Kerala, India – เสือเต้นรำ รัฐเกรละ อินเดีย

The Tiger Dance, also known as Pulikali, or Kaduvakali, is an art form that is over 200 year old. The people of Thrissur, Kerala, have made sure that this tradition stays alive. Pulikali means the “play of the tigers” hence the performance revolves around the theme of a tiger hunting and it is performed on the occasion of the fourth day of Onam celebrations. We were really excited to see these performances and tried to make arrangements to photograph the preparation for the dance, as well as the event itself. We teamed up once again with a native guide from Kerala, Philip, who made our dream come true. I must say that hiring a tour guide anywhere is a mixed bag, and most would rather drop a couple off to spend time in a museum, rather than tracking down secret locations for ceremonies and getting permission for photography. Philip was a rare gem with lots of energy and appreciation for our 180º project!
เทศกาลโอนัม (Onam) เสมือนเทศกาลขึ้นปีใหม่ของชาวมาเลยาลี ในรัฐเกรละ (Kerala) ซึ่งอยู่ทางตอนใต้ของประเทศอินเดีย มีการเฉลิมฉลองอย่างยิ่งใหญ่และยาวนานต่อเนื่องเป็นเวลา ๑๐ วัน โดยการเฉลิมฉลองจะมีการแสดงนาฏยศิลป์ต่างๆ ซึ่งเป็นศิลปะการแสดงประจำท้องถิ่นของเมืองทริซซูร์ (Thrissur) เมืองศูนย์กลางทางศิลปวัฒนธรรมแห่งรัฐเกรละ มากกว่าสองร้อยปี และหนึ่งในนาฏยศิลป์ที่โดดเด่นและมีสีสันในเทศกาลโอนัม นี้คือ “Pulikali” หรือ “Tiger Dance” หรือแปลเป็นไทยว่า “การเต้นรำของเสือ”

First Comes the Tiger Dancer’s Make-up…
The artists and the performers are very patient men who have to spend most of the night before the dance having make-up applied, starting with a heavy base coat. The tiger face on their bodies and bellies is later added with oil paint color in various styles. To make matters worse, most paints contain chemicals which create burning sensations when applied on their newly shaved bodies.
การเต้นรำของเสือ เป็นการสอดประสานระหว่างศิลปะสองสาขา คือ ศิลปินช่างวาดลวดลายกับนักแสดงร่าย-รำ-เต้น-และเคลื่อนไหวแบบเสือ เนื่องจากต้องวาดลวดลายบนตัวและหน้าท้องของนักแสดงซึ่งส่วนใหญ่ต้องมี “พุง!” ส่วนคนไม่มีพุงก็มักจะวาดลายเป็นพวกเสือดาว .. พุงนี่แหละคือคุณสมบัติที่สำคัญของนักแสดงเพราะศิลปินจะวาดใบหน้าเสือสิงห์สมิงพรายลงบนพุง และเขียนลายเสือโคร่ง เสือดาว เสือดำ สิงห์ สมิงต่างๆ ไว้บนหลัง แขน และขา สีสัน-พู่กันแต้มแต่งนี้ไม่ง่ายเลย เริ่มกันตั้งแต่คืนก่อนวันงาน นักแสดงต้องโกนขนทั่วตัวออกให้เกลี้ยง จากนั้นก็เพ้นท์ลงพื้นด้วยสีน้ำมันและรอให้แห้ง ซึ่งสีน้ำมันนี้มีเคมีที่ทำให้ระคายผิวมากๆ จึงมักเว้นการวาดบริเวณใต้วงแขน ลำคอ และใบหน้าของนักแสดง และนำหน้ากากเข้ามาเป็นตัวเติมความสมบูรณ์ในส่วนศีรษะ ทั้งศิลปินและนักแสดงต้องใช้ความอดทนอย่างมาก ลงพื้นกันทีละชั้นๆ กว่าจะแห้ง เทศกาลนี้ยังอยู่ในช่วงฤดูฝน ภูมิประเทศทางใต้ของอินเดียมีความชื้นสูง จนรุ่งเช้าก็เริ่มเขียนลายลงบนพุงและเก็บรายละเอียด

…At a Top Secret Location
Because the villages hold contests for the best make-up, the location of the make-up area is a secret. In our case, it was outdoors in an abandoned construction site. In addition to the belly painting, tiger or leopard masks are worn and a broad belt with jingles around their waist completes the getup.

A Ritual of Respect before Kaduvakali
Before starting on the procession, the painted tigers, artists, musicians, and villagers, join together in a ritual to pay respect with offerings of a coconut and grains. They also ask for blessings from a Ganapati (Ganesha) shrine as well. After the ceremony, the dancers are released to the beat of the traditional drums and cheers by the crowd, as they head for the main parade grounds.
หลังจากสีแห้งแล้วก็แต่งองค์ทรงเครื่อง คาดกระดิ่ง และสวมหน้ากาก เตรียมพร้อม! … แต่ก่อนเคลื่อนขบวนออกไปก็ต้องมีพิธีสักการะขอพรกันก่อน รวมทั้งเปิดตัวโชว์สีสันลวดลายของนักแสดงพยัคฆ์ร่ายรำประกอบจังหวะกลองแขกและเสียงเชียร์ของผู้ชมและผู้กำกับทีม ~~ ตื่นเต้นๆ ทั้งเขย่ง ทั้งมุด ทั้งขอแทรกตัวไปอยู่แถวหน้าเพื่อเก็บภาพมาให้ชมกัน

A Long Parade of Pulikali Dancers
The parade goes on for around 5-7 hours with the tigers dancing continuously to the beat of the percussion instruments, such as the “Udukku” and “Thakil”. The scene is spectacular as the tiger dancers shake their huge bellies while dancing and pouncing, to give the illusion of a changing expression of the tiger face that is painted on them. Scenes such as the tiger preying on an animal, or a tiger being hunted by a big-game-hunter are part of the beautiful choreography.
นาฏยศิลป์เสือเต้นรำประกอบจังหวะกลอง ดำเนินการแสดงเคลื่อนขบวนไปบนถนนโดยใช้เวลาประมาณ ๕ – ๗ ชั่วโมง ทั้งเต้น ทั้งเดิน และกระเพื่อมพุง ลายใบหน้าเสือสิงห์ที่วาดไว้บนพุงเคลื่อนไหวและแสดงใบหน้าอารมณ์ต่างๆ ไปตามจังหวะ นักแสดงหลายคนฝึกฝนเป็นอย่างดีและสามารถบังคับกล้ามเนื้อหน้าท้องให้เคลื่อนไหวไปมาโดยไม่ขยับร่างกายส่วนอื่นได้ รวมทั้งยักย้ายส่ายเอวส่งเสียงกระดิ่งกริ๊งกรั๊งที่คาดอยู่ใต้พุง ~~ พยัคฆ์ร่ายรำเป็นส่วนหนึ่งของเทศกาลโอนัมที่ให้ความสนุกสนานรื่นเริงทั้งนักแสดง มือกลอง และผู้ชม และด้วยมีการจัดประกวดแข่งขัน แต่ละทีมจึงจัดเต็มด้วยสีสันและเทคนิคฝีไม้ลายมือกันอย่างเต็มที่ แสดงถึงความเป็นศูนย์กลางทางศิลปวัฒนธรรมของรัฐเกรละที่โดดเด่นไม่เหมือนใคร … มีคลิปให้ชมด้านล่างนะคะ … กว่าจะได้คลิปนี่ทั้งมุดทั้งเขย่งขอทั้งแหวกทั้งแทรกตัวเข้าไปในฝูงชนเพื่อไปอยู่แถวหน้าถ่ายวิดีโอมา สนุกสนานเฟรนลี่กันมากๆ ค่ะ
รัฐเกรละ ดินแดนอันงดงามของทวยเทพไท้ ไม่ได้มีเพียงเทศกาลงานประเพณีและศิลปวัฒนธรรม แต่หากยังมากด้วยทรัพยากรทางธรมชาติ ขุนเขาเขียวขจี เครื่องเทศเครื่องหอมสมุนไพร ศาสตร์แห่งอายุรเวช และทะเลสาบน้ำกร่อยอันเลื่องชื่อลือไกล ซึ่งเราจะมาเขียนเล่าเรื่องราวเหล่านั้นในโอกาสต่อไป คอยติดตามกันนะคะ 😉
