Si Satchanalai, a Historic Town Near Sukhothai – อุทยานประวัติศาสตร์ศรีสัชนาลัย

After our blog “Exploring the Kingdom of Sukhothai“, this blog will talk about a town that is associated with it, named “Si Satchanalai”. In its prime, it was well-known as a town that produced the best celadon (a type porcelain) in the 13th century, and the oldest kilns in Thailand are located here. The former name of Si Satchanalai was ‘Chaliang’, which was found carved on many historical stone tablets. These ruins are situated in a quiet and very green area that is about 60 km far from Sukhothai town and is open every day from 8.00am to 5.00pm. If you’re like me and love making photos at historic sites, you’ll have to go and check it out. It is never crowded and has a medieval feel to it that’s hard to describe.
หลังจากพาเที่ยวชม อุทยานประวัติศาสตร์สุโขทัย กันไปแล้ว คราวนี้พามาเที่ยวต่อที่อุทยานประวัติศาสตร์ศรีสัชนาลัย หนึ่งในเมืองบริวารของเมืองประวัติศาสตร์สุโขทัย เป็นศูนย์กลางการผลิตเครื่องสังขโลกในสมัยสุโขทัยและอยุธยา อุทยานประวัติศาสตร์ศรีสัชนาลัยมีบรรยากาศที่ดูขลัง สงบ ร่มรื่น และยังคงรักษาภูมิทัศน์ของเมืองประวัติศาสตร์ไว้ได้เป็นอย่างดี เปิดให้เข้าชมทุกวันตั้งแต่เวลา ๐๘.๐๐ – ๑๗.๐๐ น.
อุทยานประวัติศาสตร์ศรีสัชนาลัย ตั้งอยู่ที่อำเภอศรีสัชนาลัย จังหวัดสุโขทัย ห่างจากอุทยานประวัติศาสตร์สุโขทัยประมาณ ๖๐ กิโลเมตร เดิมชื่อว่า “เมืองเชลียง” เมืองโบราณที่มีชื่อปรากฏอยู่บนจารึกหลักฐานต่างๆ — ขอลงรายละเอียดนิดหน่อยพอนะคะ จะได้อ่านเพลินๆ ไม่ซีเรียส

Wat Phra Si Rattana Mahathat
Wat Phra Si Rattana Mahathat, Chaliang, is the most important temple in Si Satchanalai and was built in the late 12th century. The main tall building was structured in Khmer style called a ‘Prang’, and the compound is surrounded by a thick laterite wall. This temple was nicely reconstructed and landscaped. I could almost see the hustle and bustle of the monks, tradesmen, and warriors as I walked around and took pictures!
เมืองเชลียง มีวัดพระศรีรัตนมหาธาตุราชวรวิหารด้วยค่ะ หรืออีกชื่อหนึ่งคือ “วัดพระบรมธาตุเมืองเชลียง” ปรางค์ประธานก่อด้วยศิลาแลง มีระเบียงคดล้อมรอบ เป็นวัดสำคัญของเมืองเชลียงมาแต่เดิม โดยปรากฏหลักฐานในศิลาจารึกหลักที่ ๑ สร้างขึ้นเมื่อประมาณพุทธศตวรรษที่ ๑๗-๑๘

Wat Nang Phaya
Wat Nang Phaya dates from the 15th or 16th century and has many uncoated stuccoed floral celadon/porcelain motifs on the walls and the columns of the viharn. An original wall is protected under a tin roof shelter and gives a glimpse of how the original structure was decorated. Want an interesting souvenir? The community of Si Satchanalai still produces celadon/porcelain in the ancient traditional style but use gas rather than a wood-fired kiln.
วัดนางพญา ตั้งอยู่ภายในกำแพงเมือง เป็นวัดที่มีลวดลายปูนปั้นพรรณพฤกษ์ปรากฏอยู่บนผนังวิหารและเสาที่งดงามอ่อนช้อยมาก ทำด้วยสังคโลกประเภทไม่เคลือบ ปัจจุบันชาวศรีสัชนาลัยยังคงผลิตเครื่องสังคโลกที่สืบทอดมาทั้งแบบไม่เคลือบและเคลือบแบบโบราณอย่างเคร่งครัด อีกทั้งร่วมมือกันสร้างเตาเผาที่ใช้แก๊สแทนฟืนด้วย

Wat Chang Lom
Wat Chang Lom dates back to the 15th century and has a large bell-shaped laterite chedi surrounded by 39 big elephants sculptures. This is reflected in the name of this temple, as “chang” is Thai for elephant. Unlike other temples that have a similar name, the elephant sculptures at this temple were crafted in full size standing position along the wall, -normally only the front half of the body is shown. Among the 39 elephants, the 4 corner elephants have some special decoration on their necks, legs, and ankles. As usual, the light was changing fast and the skies were dramatic. –Photographing in the rainy season is a photographers dream!
วัดช้างล้อม อยู่ภายในกำแพงเมืองศรีสัชนาลัยเช่นกัน บริเวณที่ราบเชิงเขา มีเจดีย์ทรงลังกาตั้งอยู่บนฐานประทักษิณรูปสี่เหลี่ยมจัตุรัส โดเด่นด้วยช้างปูนปั้นแบบยืนเต็มตัวแยกออกจากผนัง หันหลังชนผนังเจดีย์อยู่โดยรอบ และที่พิเศษกว่านั้นคือมุมเจดีย์ทั้ง ๔ ทิศ มีช้างปูนปั้นเชือกใหญ่ตบแต่งทรงเครื่อง มีลวดลายปูนปั้นประดับที่คอ ต้นขา และข้อเท้า .. แตกต่างจากวัดช้างล้อมที่อื่นจริงๆ แต่ด้วยกาลเวลาผันผ่าน ก็ผุพังไปเป็นส่วนใหญ่ .. เดินกันเพลิดเพลินก็หมดวันพอดี ใครไม่ชอบเดินจะเช่าจักรยานก็ได้ ที่นี่มีให้บริการค่ะ
The park is well maintained by the Fine Arts Department of Thailand along with help from UNESCO, which declared it a World Heritage Site along with the associated historic parks in Kamphaengphet and Sukhothai. Similar to Sukhothai Historical Park, Si Satchanalai Historical Park is less crowded and doesn’t get as many visitors. We had the whole park to ourselves, with only the sound of jungle birds serenading us. Bicycles can be rented nearby, or you can explore these ancient sites by foot.
