This Elephant deity in the Hindu pantheon is one of the most widely-known and worshiped. While he is most often called Ganesha or Ganapati, he is called many other names in different regions and cultures. Devotion to Ganesha is widely diffused and extends to Jains, and Buddhists, as well as Hindus in many parts of the world. Ganesha is a son of Shiva and Parvati, and has the features of an elephant, with a curved trunk, tusks, big ears, and the huge pot-belly of a human being. While he is honored as the Lord of success and destroyer of evils and obstacles, he is also worshiped as the god of education, knowledge, wisdom, art, and wealth. In fact, Ganesha is one of the five prime Hindu deities (Brahma, Vishnu, Shiva and Durga being the other four) who are worshiped and glorified by the panchayatana puja. Hindus commonly pray and ask him for blessings & wisdom, but don’t ask for special power or lottery prizes.

In Jaisalmer, the golden city that lies in the heart of the Thar desert in Rajasthan, art and religion combine in exotic pieces of art on the exterior of houses. Smiles, Indian incense aroma, prayers to the lords that sound like music, blessings and welcomes, beckon us as guests. For in this city, guests are elevated to a position equal to God. Here the local people were happy to see us, as they invited us to take photographs and even tour their houses. The Ganesha paintings on the outside walls, with the date and year inscribed on them, serve as wedding invitations and symbolize a new beginning for the married couple. A marriage ceremony in Jaisalmer is an elaborate event that involves not only the participation of the family but also the entire neighborhood. Later, the beautiful mural serves as a reminder of their special day.

The City of Lakes named Udaipur welcomes tourists with its romantic atmosphere of white buildings and lakes with luxurious palaces. The Udaipur City Palace also has an ancient and much-revered sculpture of Ganesha installed at the gate of the palace to bless visitors.

Even in Pushkar, a vegetarian town that has one of the few temples that worships Brahma, we found a small place in a corner of the town where people worship Ganesha. Our guide and driver really helped us see many parts of India by coordinating sightseeing by car and on foot. I can’t imagine seeing the country any other way!

Next to the Ganges river in the holy city of Varanasi, we walked around from the crack of dawn, through the morning, until the rise of the moon. Here life is dynamic along the Ganges river where rituals, ceremonies, and funeral cremations are performed endlessly. We saw a huge mural of the Lord of beginnings in the normal form as well as one made of leaves. Later in the evening, we could still hear the music of the Shivaratri celebration as it lulled us to deep sleep.

Upstream from the Ganges is Haridwar, one of the seven holiest Hindu places. Legend has it, that drops of Amrit were spilled to Earth on this very spot. Because of this, the city attracts pilgrims, devotees, sadhus, holy men, and also tourists to celebrate the Kumbha Mela. The Ganges river in Haridwar is aqua-colored, cold, and clear as glass. This gateway town to Mount Kailash also has a magnificent temple that presents their gods in an amusing, psychedelic, sparkling way with mosaic glass tiles. At the southernmost tip of the Indian Peninsula, where the Arabian Sea meets the Indian Ocean, lies Tamil Nadu. This state has a 2,000-year-old heritage culture of Dravidian and also worships Ganesha (known here as Pillaiyar or Vinayagar). We traveled to an ancient rock-cut cave temple which is dedicated to Ganesha, where a unique Tamil image of Ganesha is found. The image of the 6 foot tall stone idol was carved with 2 arms and dates back to between the years 1091 and 1238. Like most of the temples in the south of India, we weren’t allowed to photograph inside the inner sanctum but found a mural on the ceiling that shows the image. We ventured into the sacred area and saw the statue, illuminated by oil lamps with some gold covered parts of the body shimmering in the flickering lights. We felt strangely moved by the sight of this ancient Ganesha idol and understood the long lines and crowds at this temple. Of course, we didn’t miss the chance to get some souvenirs, including a small copy of the deity, a 3D photo, and a wall plaque that utters recorded blessings when touched. 🙂
และดินแดนแห่งอารยะธรรมดราวิเดียนอย่างรัฐทมิฬนาฑู รัฐใหญ่ทางใต้สุด อันเป็นจุดบรรจบของทะเลอาราเบียนกับมหาสมุทรอินเดีย เราเดินทางไปยังวัดแห่งหนึ่งที่อยู่ไกลจากเมืองออกไป วัดนี้สร้างขึ้นเพื่อบูชาพระคเณศและเป็นเพียงวัดเดียวในอินเดียที่องค์พระคเณศมี ๒ กร ประดิษฐานภายในวัดที่เป็นถ้ำหินตัดแบบโบราณ พระคเณศโบราณองค์นี้ทำจากหินสกัดขนาด ๖ ฟุต สีเกือบดำหุ้มทอง มีผู้เลื่อมใสศรัทธาและหลั่งไหลมาบูชาสักการะจากทั่วสารทิศ เสียดายที่วัดในตอนใต้ของอินเดียส่วนใหญ่ห้ามถ่ายภาพภายในศาสนสถาน ถ่ายได้เพียงด้านนอกเท่านั้น แต่ด้วยความช่างสังเกต เหลือบตาไปมา แหงนหน้าไปเห็นภาพวาดบนเพดาน ซึ่งคาดว่าน่าจะใช่องค์พระคเณศที่อยู่ภายในแน่นอนจึงเก็บภาพก่อนเข้าแถวเดินไปภายในเพื่อสักการะ องค์พระคเณศงามสง่าอย่างเหลือเชื่อ ไม่เคยพบเห็นที่ไหนตรึงตาได้เท่านี้ ไม่แปลกใจเลยที่แถวยาวมาก คนเยอะมาก และเมืองกลับออกมาภายนอกวัดมีร้านค้าเครื่องสักกระและของที่ระลึกจึงได้ภาพพระคเณศแบบสามมิติและอื่นๆ กลับมาเป็นที่ระลึกด้วยเช่นกัน
