Ganesh Chaturthi or Ganesha’s birthday ceremony is celebrated all over India and in Hindus communities around the world. Each community makes a huge and colorful Ganesha statue to sit outside for a 21-day celebration, with decorations, flowers, incense, music and dance, before releasing this huge idol into the river or ocean. In this way, it is sent back to heaven after finishing the ceremony.
เทศกาลคเณศจตุรถี หรือ วันประสูติพระคเณศ นับเป็นเทศกาลที่ยิ่งใหญ่ที่สุดของการบูชาพระคเณศ จะเริ่มในวันแรม ๔ ค่ำ เดือน ๙ หรือวันแรม ๔ ค่ำ เดือน ๑๐ หรือประมาณปลายเดือนสิงหาคม-กันยายน ซึ่งเชื่อกันว่าพระองค์จะเสด็จลงมาสู่โลกมนุษย์เพื่อประทานพรแก่ผู้ศรัทธาพระองค์ท่าน เทศกาลนี้มีการจัดพิธีกรรมบูชาและการเฉลิมฉลองอย่างยิ่งใหญ่ทั่วอินเดียและผู้นับถือพระคเณศทั่วโลก ผู้ศรัทธาบูชาพระคเณศจะจัดสร้างเทวรูปพระคเณศขนาดใหญ่โตในแต่ละวัดหรือชุมชนเพื่อเข้าพิธีบูชา รวมทั้งจัดหาเครื่องสังเวยมาถวายแด่พระคเณศ พร้อมพิธีสวดมนต์บูชา ร้องรำทำเพลง จัดงานกันอย่างยิ่งใหญ่ตระการตา จากนั้นจะแห่องค์เทวรูปไปทั่วเมืองแล้วทำพิธีลอยเทวรูปลงสู่แม่น้ำหรือทะเลในเมืองต่างๆ เพื่อส่งพระคเณศกลับสู่เทวโลก

The Rituals
A Ganesh Chaturthi ceremony has many rituals that continue from ancient times, and also each Hindus family performs the ritual in their house by displaying Ganesha images that they already have, plus a new one that they will have to perform a floating ceremony, which normally is made from clay.
เทศกาลคเณศจตุรถี เป็นพิธีกรรมทำกันมาแต่โบราณ มีรายละเอียดปลีกย่อยอีกมากมาย สำหรับการบูชาในแต่ละครอบครัวก็จะประกอบพิธีบูชาเฉลิมฉลองทั้งเทวรูปพระคเณศที่บูชาอยู่เดิมภายในบ้าน และเทวรูปที่ปั้นขึ้นใหม่จากดินเหนียวและวัสดุธรรมชาติ

21 Days Later…
After performing the ritual for 21 days with special leaves and offerings, on the last day to complete this ceremony, the Hindus family will dip their Ganesha images in water. For the small clay image, they will have a floating ritual into the river or the ocean, which is the same as the huge image. Usually, the small one is made of clay and straw or plaster. The huge image has to be set-up outdoors for the people in the community to come pay respect to, so it needs to use some chemical painted color, but each year they find and adapt natural materials to be more eco-friendly.
สำหรับพระคเณศที่มีบูชาอยู่เดิมภายในครัวเรือนนั้น เมื่อทำพิธีบูชาแล้วก็จะนำมาแตะน้ำก็ถือเป็นอันเสร็จพิธีโดยสมบูรณ์ ส่วนเทวรูปที่ปั้นขึ้นใหม่สำหรับเทศกาลคเณศจตุรถีนี้จะนำไปทำพิธีลอยน้ำเมื่อจบเทศกาลหรือจบพิธีบูชาของแต่ละครอบครัว เทวรูปที่ปั้นขึ้นใหม่ส่วนใหญ่จะมีขนาดย่อมๆ ทำจากดินผสมฟางจึงเป็นมิตรกับสิ่งแวดล้อมมากกว่าเทวรูปองค์ใหญ่อลังการที่ต้องเข้าพิธีบูชาตลอด ๒๑ วัน จึงต้องทำให้แข็งแรงทนแดดทนฝนในระดับหนึ่ง ประกอบกับต้องสวยงามและมีสีสันสดใส จึงอาจใช้ปูนปลาสเตอร์ประกอบกับฟางข้าวและสีที่มีเคมีเป็นส่วนประกอบ โดยแต่ละปีก็คิดค้นประยุกต์หาวัสดุธรรมชาติและส่วนประกอบที่เป็นมิตรกับสิ่งแวดล้อมมาปั้นองค์เทวรูปกันมากขึ้น

The Offerings to Shree Ganesha
The offerings to Shree Ganesha are vegetarian of course, including incense, butter lamps, flowers, bananas, sugarcane, coconuts or seasonal fruit, water, milk, grains and nuts, 21 kinds of leaves (one kind each day), and a very special dessert, called laddu and modak.

Ceremony on the Beach in Chennai, Tamil Nadu
Chennai, the capital city of Tamil Nadu, has very long beaches of the Bay of Bengal and is known as the “Detroit of India” for its automobile industry. Even though it’s a somewhat westernized metro city, people still continue this Hindu ceremony. The image above shows a family, taking a clay Ganesha to perform the floating ritual, at the end of the 21-day celebration. They were very friendly and offered to let us share in this traditional merit- making activity.
ณ เมืองเจนไน เมืองหลวงของรัฐทมิฬนาฑู มีชายฝั่งทะเลยาวกว่า ๒๕ กิโลเมตร เมืองเจนไนป็นจุดแรกที่กองทัพอังกฤษได้ขึ้นฝั่งและมีการก่อตั้งบริษัท East India Company และเป็นที่รู้จักในนามของ “Detroit of India” โดยเป็นที่ตั้งของอุตสาหกรรมยานยนต์ขนาดใหญ่จากทั้งในและต่างประเทศ แต่ชาวเจนไนยังคงยึดมั่นศรัทธาในประเพณีและการบูชาองค์เทพฮินดูไม่เสื่อมคลาย ดังเช่นครอบครัวนี้ที่ได้ประกอบพิธีบูชาพระคเณศจนครบ ๒๑ วัน และกำลังอันเชิญพระคเณศที่ปั้นด้วยดินมาประกอบพิธีลอยน้ำ

Although Marina Beach is the most crowded beach in India, bathing and swimming are prohibited because the undercurrent is very turbulent. This family performed a blessing ritual in a small quiet area on the beach before the sunset while many people came to perform this ritual as well.
หาดมาริน่า ของเมืองเจนไน เป็นหาดที่ผู้คนมาเที่ยวกันมาก ส่วนใหญ่เป็นชาวเมืองเจนไนที่มาเที่ยวพักผ่อนหย่อนใจ แต่ที่นี่ห้ามลงเล่นน้ำเพราะมีกระแสใต้น้ำและคลื่นแรงตลอดทั้งปี ในวันคเณศจตุรถีนี้จะมีผู้คนมาประกอบพิธีลอยน้ำกันมากพอสมควร ซึ่งแต่ละครอบครัวจะช่วยกันเตรียมพื้นที่บนชายหาดเพื่อบูชาสักการะและขอพร ซึ่งครอบครัวนี้เรียกเราเข้าไปร่วมพิธีและถ่ายภาพด้วย

Ganesh Returns to Heaven
After the ritual on the beach, it’s time to send Ganesha into the Indian Ocean. Because the ocean waves are strong and dangerous, the family decided to dip the Ganesha in the ocean water and let the young boy that is a talented swimmer, take the idol out into the deeper area. The completed ritual brings much happiness to the family and assures that this rich tradition will continue for many generations. — Om Shri Ganesha Yanamaha! — ॐ श्री गणेशाय नम
