Wat Suandok and the Case of the Missing “D” ~ ปฎิบัติการซ่อมป้าย “วัดสวน_โอเค!” ให้เป็น “วัดสวนดอก”
Wat Suandok, located in Chiang Mai, Thailand, is a royal temple built in the reign of King Kue Na of the Lanna empire in the year 1370 CE. The name of the temple means “Flower Garden Temple” because it was built in King Kue Na’s flower garden. Although King Kue Na named this temple Wat Buppharam, local people call it “Wat Suandok” for short and because it’s easier to remember.
วัดสวนดอกเป็นพระอารามหลวง ชั้นตรี ชนิดสามัญ ตั้งอยู่ถนนสุเทพ ตำบลสุเทพ อำเภอเมืองเชียงใหม่ จังหวัดเชียงใหม่ โดยพระเจ้ากือนาธรรมิกราช กษัตริย์ลำดับที่ ๖ แห่งราชวงศ์มังราย อาณาจักรล้านนา ทรงพระราชทานอุทยาน “สวนดอกไม้พะยอม” เป็นที่สร้างวัดพร้อมกับพระราชทานนามวัดนี้ว่า “วัดบุปผาราม” หมายถึง วัดแห่งสวนดอกไม้ ซึ่งเป็นที่รู้จักกันในนามว่า “วัดสวนดอก”
The photo above is from our book, THAILAND 180º, and was taken when they had a traditional Lanna ceremony known as “Sueb Chata Luang”, a ritual for the longevity of the northern culture. I was glad to be able to see this ceremony, and made this photo from the back, so I wouldn’t disturb anyone. Note the strings hang from the ceiling and are tied to each others heads.

Now that we live in Chiang Mai, we often pass Wat Suandok on Suthep Road when we go to the city. On our first trip around the city, I saw the temple sign read “WAT SUAN OK” and asked my wife if she thought they had changed the name. Fon said “No no no! It is Wat Suandok”. Umm! but it doesn’t have the “D”.
Almost six months passed and we saw that the sign still read “WAT SUAN OK”. “We should fix this! A letter D and some glue are all it would take. You know how much red tape is involved in getting things done here, let’s just do it for them.” I said. Fon cringed and told me that it was a royal temple and we HAVE to get permission first. I sighed and sat down to wait while she went to the temple’s office to ask for permission. I figured the answer would be a quick no, but it was her birthday and I didn’t want to fuss. She returned minutes later and said they told her it would be fine if we replaced the letter D ourselves. It seems that they are renovating the whole temple and plan to replace the sign in a year, when the rest of the work is done. We spent the rest of the day hunting for a letter D, but no one would sell us just one letter, and most didn’t even have the right font or size. I resolved to go home and make the letter myself!
.. หลังจากย้ายมาอยู่เชียงใหม่ .. เวลาไปไหนมาไหนก็มักจะผ่านวัดสวนดอกเป็นประจำ แต่เอ๊ะ! ป้ายหน้าวัด ชื่อ WAT SUAN OK! — เวลาผ่านไปเกือบ ๖ เดือนแล้วก็ยัง OK เหมือนเดิม ผ่านหน้าวัดทีไรคุณเอ็ดก็จะบอกว่านี่ “วัดสวนโอเค” คุณเอ็ดเค้ามีความกระตือรือร้นมาก แล้ววันนึงก็บอกว่าเราทำมาติดให้วัดเลยดีกว่า คือเค้าอยู่เมืองไทยมานาน และรู้ว่าจะทำอะไรกันแต่ละอย่างนั้นมีพิธีรีตอง เรื่องเยอะ หรือไม่ก็รองบกันยาวนาน เราจึงเริ่มปฏิบัติการเฉพาะกิจเมื่อไปกราบสักการะไหว้พระที่วัดสวนดอกในโอกาสวันเกิดจึงไปสอบถามที่สำนักงานวัด ได้ความมาว่า ทางวัดทราบว่ามีตัวอักษรหล่นหายมาตั้งแต่ปลายปีที่แล้วและอยากจะปรับปรุงแต่เป็นโครงการที่มากกว่าแค่ซ่อมแซม คือ อยากจะทำป้ายหน้าวัดใหม่แต่ต้องรอปฏิสังขรณ์พระอุโบสถกับบูรณะฉัตรองค์พระเจดีย์ให้แล้วเสร็จก่อน คาดว่ากว่าจะเสร็จฉลองพระอุโบสถก็ปีหน้า — เราเห็นว่านานเกินไป อีกอย่างหนึ่งคือ นักท่องเที่ยวมาเยือนก็เยอะ เดิน/นั่งรถผ่านหน้าวัดก็แยะ ไม่อยากให้จำหรืออ่านชื่อวัดผิดๆ จึงขอซ่อมตัวอักษรภาษาอังกฤษที่หลุดหายให้ก่อนจะดีกว่า
I knew that that the Times font was popular for signs and downloaded an outline, cut out the letter, painted it and assembled all the tools I needed to attach it to the sign. One week later we were ready for our mission…
ทำไมเราเลือกวัดสวนดอก? — เราไม่ได้เลือก แต่เราผ่านหน้าวัดบ่อยๆ เห็นแล้วก็ไม่สบายใจ จึงขออนุญาตลงมือทำเลยดีกว่า อีกนัยหนึ่งคือ ทำแล้วรู้สึกดี ทำแล้วไม่เดือดร้อนเบียดเบียนใคร ทำในสิ่งที่เราทำได้ช่วยเหลือได้ และภูมิใจที่ได้ทำ ซึ่งเราลงมือทำเองทุกอย่าง และจัดเตรียมอุปกรณ์พร้อม!
It was sprinkling rain on the morning we went to the temple, but we weren’t going to let that stop us!
พอสัปดาห์ถัดมาก็นำไปติดให้แต่เช้าท่ามกลางสายฝนโปรยปราย แต่ไม่ใช่ปัญหาสำหรับเราเลย อีกทั้งเราเดินทางถ่ายภาพกลางสายฝนและน้ำท่วมมาเยอะแล้ว ฝนตกแค่ปรอยๆ ชิลๆ ค่ะ
I was really nervous, but the project went quickly and some smiles from monks passing by gave me encouragement.
พระภิกษุ-สามเณร และคนที่ผ่านไปมาหลายท่านมาหยุดยืนดูและยิ้มให้ขณะที่เรากำลังซ่อมแซมป้ายหน้าวัด ตื่นเต้นนิดหน่อย
Ta-DA! … Now it is no longer “WAT SUAN OK”, it’s back to its name “WAT SUANDOK”. Afterwards, we left without telling anyone, which is just how we wanted it. We’re proud and as my Thai friends pointed out, it was a good thing to do and we might receive boons or merits for our effort. (Sort of extra credit points for our next life) And so ends the Case of the Missing D.
