Goddess Durga 101 – दुर्गा – พระแม่ทุรคา
Goddess Durga is believed to be the power behind the creation, preservation, and destruction of the world. There are many incarnations of Durga, including Kali, Bhagvati, Ambika, Gauri, Kandalini, Rajeswari, and others. Durga was incarnated as the united power of all divine beings with weapons to kill the demon “Mahishasur”. Typically she’s seen holding several different weapons in her eight or ten hands, each of the weapons holds a special significance. Her hands hold a conch shell, bow with arrow, thunderbolt, lotus, disc, sword and trident which symbolize that she protects her devotees from all directions.

Goddess Durga’s Powers
Goddess Durga’s image symbolizes power and divinity as well as compassion for her devotees. Durga’s vehicle is a lion, which represents power, will and determination. Durga riding the lion symbolizes her mastery over all these qualities. This suggests to the devotee that one has to possess all these qualities to get over the demon of ego. The ultimate message that Goddess Durga gives her followers is that armed with the force of righteousness; one can achieve the victory over all of the demonic forces inside us and reach new spiritual heights to become at one with God.
พระแม่ทุรคาทรงพาหนะสิงโต อันเป็นสัญลักษณ์แห่งพละกำลัง ความแข็งแกร่ง สามารถปราบอสูรทั้งปวง แต่บางแห่งก็จะเห็นพระแม่ทุรคาทรงเสือ ไม่ว่าจะทรงเสือหรือสิงโตก็มีนัยยะแห่งการเอาชนะอัตตาอันเป็นเหตุนำมาซึ่งทุกข์
Above are the carved silver doors of a ten-armed Durga at the Durgiana temple or Silver temple as it’s sometimes called, in Amritsar, Punjab, which was constructed in 1908. This temple has many amazing carved silver doors of Hindu gods and goddesses.

Differentiating Goddesses Durga and Kali in Art
The mural above is depicting Kali –we were confused that she is the same goddess as Durga but she’s not. Basically, Kali appears in black body with multi-arms, long red tongue, red lips with blood, and wears skulls necklace, while Durga appears as we described in the 1st & 2nd paragraphs —however, both are an avatar of the Goddess Parvati.

Goddess Durga in Bengaluru – พระแม่ทุรคา เมืองบังกาลอร์
In Bangalore, which is now officially know as Bengaluru, there’s a small temple that is dedicated to Durga. Here we found the statues shown above that illustrates the whole story above about Durga as she rides on a lion with weapons in her multi-arms to kill the Mahishasur demon.
Durga Puja is celebrated on the 9th day of the Ashvin month which occurs in the autumn months around September/ October, at the end of Navaratri and Dussehra. The Durga idols will be carried out in a grand procession and immersed in the river or the sea.
