The King Narai Festival

ALL ABOARD!  Woo-woooooooooo…  Clickety-clack! Clickety-clack! Clickety-clack!  Next Stop LOP BURI !!..

Lop Buri is very tourist friendly and most of the attractions are within walking distance of each other.  It’s just a fun train ride away from Bangkok. In February, there is an annual festival called The King Narai Festival, within the King Narai’s Palace, Phra Narai Ratchaniwet, was built by King Narai the Great, who ruled Ayutthaya from 1656 to 1688.  The palace was a place for relaxation, hunting, administering the country’s affairs, and welcoming official visitors.  During this colorful event,  the locals dress up in old Thai costumes, display old crafts like fruit carving and weaving, demonstrate traditional sports with swords and sticks, sell traditional food and snacks, and there’s even a light & sound show.  We joined in and wore Thai costumes to the festival, and had so much fun, that we now return every year. >>https://www.giunca.com/EdWorld/2014/11/25/all-aboard-for-lop-buri-thailand-history-monkey-madness-and-endless-sunflower-fields/

The Yasothon Rocket Festival

The Yasothon Rocket Festival is well worth attending, it runs early May every year.  When we were working on our THAILAND 180º book, we went for the first time and arrived on the second day of the festival and made our way down the sidewalk, to the sounds of blaring Isaan music.  The parade was a real feast for the eyes, with troupes of dancers, mating frog and various animal floats, small bands on trucks, and huge, lavishly decorated rockets.  The largest of the rockets were made of blue PVC pipe, and filled with 265 pounds of black powder!

The actual blast-off photo was very difficult to make with a fisheye lens because I couldn’t get close enough for a full frame shot.  As my wife was regaled with horror stories of exploding rockets and hot PVC shrapnel of years past, the MC was calling over the loudspeaker for me to “Step away from the rocket.”  After three launches I captured the photo above and joined the other spectators, in the “safe” area.  It’s one of the few photos in the book that I had to crop, but at least, I lived to confess to it.  >>https://www.giunca.com/EdWorld/2012/05/08/a-behind-the-scenes-look-at-some-of-the-yasothon-rocket-festival-photographs/

 

งานประเพณีบุญบั้งไฟ จังหวัดยโสธร เป็นงานที่ตื่นเต้นสนุกสนานเป็นอย่างยิ่งและจัดเป็นประจำทุกปีในช่วงต้นพฤษภาคม    ช่วงที่เรากำลังทำหนังสือ THAILAND 180º นั้นเป็นครั้งแรกที่เราได้สัมผัสงานบั้งไฟ   ตัวเมืองมีการปิดถนนจัดตั้งเวทีและเครื่องเสียงเปิดเพลงอีสานกระหึ่มกันทุกเวที  มีขบวนพาเหรดสวยงามตระการตามาก ทั้งขบวนฟ้อนรำ  ขบวนสัตว์ประดิษฐ์ต่างๆ   ขบวนวงดนตรีโปงลางและการแสดงพื้นบ้านอีสาน  ไปจนถึงขบวนบั้งไฟโก้ที่ใหญ่โตและประดับประดาอย่างงดงาม    บั้งไฟส่วนใหญ่ทำจากท่อพีวีซีบรรจุดินปะสิวและอื่นๆ    เมื่อถึงสถานที่แข่งขันจุดบั้งไฟ ก็เริ่มนับถอยหลังและบั้งไฟก็พุ่งทะยานสู่ท้องฟ้า!    การถ่ายภาพบั้งไฟกำลังพุ่งทะยานขึ้นด้วย Circular Fisheye Lens นี้ยากจริงๆ   เพราะข้อจำกัดของการที่ต้องถ่ายภาพในระยะใกล้ที่สุด   ซึ่งระยะนั้นเป็นจุดอันตรายมากในขณะกำลังจุดปล่อยบั้งไฟหมื่นบั้งไฟแสนเหล่านี้   ซึ่งหลายครั้งที่ดิฉันและพิธีกรดำเนินงานเตือนให้คุณเอ็ดเวิร์ดถอยออกห่างจากฐานจุดปล่อยบั้งไฟเพราะคุณเอ็ดเวิร์ดอยู่ใกล้ที่สุดเลย! — บล๊อก “บั้งไฟยโสธร” อ่านต่อได้ที่>>https://www.giunca.com/EdWorld/2012/05/08/a-behind-the-scenes-look-at-some-of-the-yasothon-rocket-festival-photographs/

 

Phii Ta Khon

Phii Ta Khon is our favorite festival in Thailand.  It takes place in the small town of Dansai, in the province of Loei, which is located in the Northeast, or Isaan area of Thailand. The parade of ghosts was very colorful, loud, somewhat casual, and yet fast paced.  The main street was lined with food vendors selling Isaan treats like fried grasshoppers,  BBQ meat on a stick, fried pork skins and souvenir stands selling t-shirts, masks, and postcards.  This is a great event to bring the whole family to, as it takes place in late June or July, during the Summer school break, when families can travel.  The local people are very friendly and there are mask painting and other classes that allow you to really learn about the festival and culture.  In fact, the locals don’t mind if you wear a costume and join in the parade.  There are also some great souvenirs to buy and a chance to try some exotic food.  Be sure to book your hotel early or be prepared to stay in a nearby town and hire a driver.  >>https://www.giunca.com/EdWorld/2016/07/04/its-phi-ta-khon-time-in-loei-

The Candle Festival

The Candle Festival in Ubon Ratchathani is a must see list.  This festival dates back to the days before electricity, where candles were given to monks at the start of Buddhist lent (in July), or Khao Pansa, a time in which monks remain in their monastery for three months without traveling.  Since 1927, this festival has grown into a parade of huge candle floats, Northeastern bands, and dance groups in traditional costumes.  A contest is held and an award is given to the most beautiful.

The floats are created by different temples, districts or other institutions all with the help of volunteers, led by some of the top artisans in the Kingdom.  By arriving in Ubon Ratchathani a few days early, visitors can see the floats being made at different temples which monks and novices were also working on the floats.  Even YOU can join and work on the wax appliqué or carving.  >>https://www.giunca.com/EdWorld/2016/07/20/the-candle-festival-at-ubon-ratchathani/

 

ประเพณีแห่เทียนพรรษา จังหวัดอุบลราชธานี เป็นประเพณีที่ต้องหาโอกาสไปให้ได้จริงๆ ในช่วงเทศกาลเข้าพรรษา (เดือนกรกฎาคม) อันเป็นประเพณีของชาวไทยพุทธ โดยนำเทียนพรรษาไปถวายแด่พระภิกษุสงฆ์เพื่อพระสงฆ์จะได้ใช้ยามปฏิบัติกิจขณะจำพรรษาเป็นเวลาสามเดือนตามประเพณีสมัยโบราณที่ยังไม่มีไฟฟ้าใช้   จนมีการสืบสานประเพณีนี้ต่อกันมาถึงปัจจุบัน    ซึ่งขบวนแห่เทียนพรรษาของอุบลราชธานีจัดเป็นขบวนแห่พร้อมนางรำในชุดแต่งกายสวยงาม และมีขบวนต้นเทียนมาจากหลากชุมชนและหลายอำเภอ   บางทีมก็สรรหาช่างฝีมือฉกาจจากทั่วสารทิศมาสร้างสรรค์ผลงานสุดอลังการเข้าร่วมประกวด   นอกจากนี้นักท่องเที่ยวยังสามารถเข้าชมการประดับตบแต่งและมีส่วนร่วมในการทำชิ้นส่วนประดับต้นเทียนด้วย  ทั้งอิ่มบุญอิ่มตากันเลยงานนี้

The Hungry Ghost Festival

The 10th Lunar Month Festival or Sart Duen Sib is believed that the doors of hell (and all realms that aren’t heaven) are opened, and spirits are allowed to wander the earth at this time of the year.  This is the perfect time to pay respect to deceased ancestors and to perform activities that will make merit for these spirits, especially the ones that haven’t been reincarnated yet.  Heading to Nakhon Si Thammarat in the south, to witness their Tenth Lunar Month or Hungry Ghost Festival, where the rituals are steeped in tradition.  At Wat Phra Mahathat Wora Maha Viharn and around where the festival has been held officially that you will be surprised by the bizarre ghost sculptures also have some great bazaars where you could observe the special food being made for the festival. >> https://www.giunca.com/EdWorld/2014/09/18/thailands-hungry-ghost-festival-in-nakhorn-si-thammarat-part-2/

“ประเพณีบุญสารทเดือนสิบ” เป็นงานบุญประเพณีที่สำคัญ มีจุดมุ่งหมายสำคัญเพื่อเป็นการอุทิศส่วนกุศลให้แก่ดวงวิญญาณของบรรพชน และญาติที่ล่วงลับ ซึ่งประตูยมโลกจะเปิดเพื่อปลดปล่อยดวงวิญญาณของผู้ที่ล่วงลับไปแล้วให้มารับส่วนบุญกุศลจากบุตรหลานญาติพี่น้องที่อุทิศให้  โดยประเพณีบุญสารทเดือนสิบ ณ บริเวณวัดพระมหาธาตุวรมหาวิหาร ในตัวเมืองจังหวัดนครศรีธรรมราช ก็มีการจัดงานประเพณีทำบุญบังสุกุลและงานออกร้านขายอาหารและผลิตภัณฑ์ต่างๆ   รวมทั้ง “หุ่นเปรต” ที่ทำให้สะดุดตาในทันทีเพราะเป็นสัญลักษณ์อย่างหนึ่งของงานประเพณีนี้    มีการประกวดหุ่นเปรต  ริ้วขบวนแห่เปรต  ตั้งเปรตชิงเปรต  หุ่นเปรตที่ทำจากวัสดุธรรมชาติหน้าตา รูปทรงหลากหลาย  รวมถึงการประกวดจัดหมฺรับ อันมีนัยสำคัญสำหรับงานบุญนี้ https://www.giunca.com/EdWorld/2014/09/18/thailands-hungry-ghost-festival-in-nakhorn-si-thammarat-part-2/

The Vegetarian Festival

The Vegetarian Festival or Tesagan Gin Pak, in Phuket, is always a large tourist attraction and it is a part of Chinese tradition that Chinese-Thais still practice today which a group of people known locally as Ma Song perform ritualized mutilations upon themselves by such means as impaling themselves with swords, needles and other pointy things, or walking on hot coals, wrapping themselves with strings of exploding firecrackers, or even climbing a ladder with rungs made of knife blades.  In general, Chinese and Thais celebrate this festival in less dangerous, but also self- sacrificing ways, for ten days:  Wearing only white clothes, a strict vegetarian diet, that also avoids pungent smelling vegetables such as garlic, chives, shallots, and onion.  Tobacco and alcohol are also avoided.  Merit making such as donating money, listening to sermons at the temple, or chanting.  More Here>>>https://www.giunca.com/EdWorld/2014/09/23/the-vegetarian-festival-in-phuket-thailand/

 

ประเพณีถือศีลกินผัก หรือ เทศกาลกินเจ เป็นอีกประเพณีหนึ่งที่สืบต่อกันมาในหมู่คนไทยเชื้อสายจีน  แต่ “ภูเก็ต” ไม่มีประเพณีกินเจ แต่จะเรียกว่า “ประเพณีถือศีลกินผัก” ตามภาษาจีนฮกเกี้ยนที่เรียกว่า “เจี๊ยะฉ่าย”    การถือศีลกินผักของบุคคลทั่วไปส่วนมากจะแต่งกายชุดสีขาว งดบริโภคเนื้อสัตว์ และงดบริโภคผักที่มีกลิ่นฉุน  งดยาสูบเครื่องดองของเมา  ทำบุญทำทาน  ฟังธรรม  สวดมนต์ เป็นต้น … แต่สิ่งดึงดูดนักท่องเที่ยวในประเพณีถือศีลกินผักที่ภูเก็ตนี้ คือ “ม้าทรง” หรือร่างทรงเทพเจ้าหรือพระจีน   มีความเชื่อกันว่าการเข้าทรงของเทพเจ้าหรือพระจีนเป็นการแสดงอิทธิฤทธิ์ช่วยขจัดปัดเป่าทุกข์ร้อน รักษาโรคภัยไข้เจ็บ บันดาลความเจริญรุ่งเรืองในการประกอบอาชีพ และอำนวยความเป็นสิริมงคลให้แก่ผู้ที่เคารพเลื่อมใส    ม้าทรงจะมีพิธีการที่ศาลเจ้าโดยบวงสรวงและอันเชิญให้เทพหรือพระจีนซึ่งแต่ละองค์จะมีธงและอาวุธประจำองค์มาประทับร่างม้าทรง  เมื่อเข้าทรงแล้วบางครั้งจะคว้ามีด ดาบ อาวุธต่างๆ ออกมาร่ายรำ และทิ่มแทงร่างกายตนเอง  รวมทั้งการเดินลุยไฟและทรมานร่างกายในอีกหลายรูปแบบ
