As I mentioned last week in Part 1, Bangkok, AKA “The City of Angels”, is such a huge space-age looking city. Today, we are continuing to talk about the landmarks of Bangkok in Part II, for you to mark as a meeting point / starting point / or selfie point (ahem) .. many people love these landmarks. There might be some that you love, let’s check them out!!

7. Khao San Road is a world famous destination for backpackers and those exploring Asia on a budget. Although the road is only about 4 blocks long, it’s packed with stores, budget hotels, guest houses, bars, and restaurants. At night, there is almost a carnival like atmosphere, as food vendors push their cars through the street selling noodles, fried insects, BBQ meat on a stick, and almost any other dish you could imagine. Music blares as partying crowds spill out of the bars and onto the street. It’s hard to believe that this road was once the center of rice trade in Bangkok!
๗. ถนนข้าวสาร มีชื่อเสียงโด่งดังไปทั่วโลกจนกลายเป็นแลนด์มาร์คหนึ่งของนักท่องเที่ยว วิวัฒนาการย่านเก่าจากตรอกที่เป็นแหล่งค้าขายข้าวสารที่ใหญ่ที่สุดของพระนคร เปลี่ยนผันมาเป็นย่านเกสต์เฮ้าส์และศูนย์รวมของเหล่าแบ็คแพ็กเกอร์ที่มาท่องเที่ยวประเทศไทย ก่อนที่จะมีวิวัฒนาการจนปัจจุบันถนนข้าวสารกลายเป็นการผสมผสานของถนนคนเดิน ร้านอาหารและเครื่องดื่ม และสถานบันเทิงยามค่ำคืนอันเปี่ยมไปด้วยสีสันและบรรยากาศที่เป็นกันเอง

8. This landmark consists of two tall red wooden pillars in front of Wat Suthat and a Brahman temple which Thais call “Sao Ching Chaa”. The giant swing was built at the end of the 18th century and used in the Brahman ceremony, “Tri Yampawai Tripawai”, popularly known as Lo Ching Cha. Groups of four Brahmans competed with each other trying to swing high enough to grab a bag of gold coins that was attached to a pole. Some men would swing well over 20 meters in the air. Due to many fatal accidents, the swing ceremony was canceled in the 1930’s but the rest of the ceremony is still celebrated indoors at the nearby Brahman temple. No one knows how high the original swing was, since after 200 years the old swing had decayed and was replaced with a new one, and it was replaced again with one made of teak in 2006. With a height of 21.15 meters from the base to the top, the swing is gigantic and towers majestically as one of Bangkok’s historic landmarks.
๘. เสาไม้ขนาดใหญ่สีแดงหน้าวัดสุทัศน์เทพวนาราม ในอดีตเป็นย่านใจกลางของกรุงเทพมหานคร ที่นี่คือ “เสาชิงช้า” บริเวณเสาชิงช้าเดิมถือว่าเป็น “สะดือเมือง” หรือจุดศูนย์กลางของพระนคร เป็นที่ตั้งของโบสถ์พราหมณ์ที่สร้างขึ้นในช่วงเวลาเดียวกันตามธรรมเนียมการสร้างพระนครที่มีมาแต่โบราณ รวมทั้งประกอบพิธีโล้ชิงช้าในพระราชพิธี “ตรียัมปวาย-ตรีปวาย” บูชาพระศิวะ พระนารายณ์ และพระพรหม แม้พิธีโล้ชิงช้าซึ่งเป็นส่วนหนึ่งของพระราชพิธีได้ถูกยกเลิกไป แต่การประกอบพระราชพิธีนี้ยังให้ดำรงไว้โดยประกอบพระราชพิธีภายในเทวสถาน หลังจากเสาชิงช้าได้ถูกย้าย และปฏิสังขรณ์หลายครั้งมาเป็นเวลาสองร้อยกว่าปี ปัจจุบันเสาต้นใหม่ทำด้วยไม้สักทองจากเมืองแพร่ ทาสีแดงชาด สูง ๒๑.๑๕ เมตร ยังคงเป็นสถานที่ท่องเที่ยวทางประวัติศาสตร์ที่สำคัญและแลนด์มาร์คของกรุงเทพมหานคร อันเป็นที่รู้จักทั้งชาวไทยและชาวต่างประเทศ

9. The centerpiece of the Democracy Monument is a sculptured box that represents the container that held the first Thai Constitution of 1932. The four “wings” around the monument represent the branches of the Thai armed forces that guard the constitution, including the army, navy, air force and police. Other interesting features include some very telling bas-relief panels and naga (mythological Hindu and Buddhist snake-like guardians) fountains. Be sure to get close and explore this monument if time and traffic permit. Put your fingers in some of the bullet holes and feel the history. Take time to look closely at the bas-relief panels and grasp their real meaning. Run your hands over the nearly faded graffiti, and touch the water flowing from the Naga’s mouth, as it exits a lion’s mouth. Don’t be one of those lazy people that take pictures out the window of a tour bus, get out, dodge cars and walk over to examine it!
๙. เดินจากเสาชิงช้ามาตามถนนดินสอบรรจบถนนราชดำเนินกลาง จะเห็น “อนุสาวรีย์ประชาธิปไตย” แต่ก่อนถึง แวะร้านหนังสือริมขอบฟ้าตรงหัวมุมซ้ายมือของถนนกันก่อนนะ แวะเพื่อ…ก็เพื่อซื้อหนังสือ THAILAND 180º สิคะ!! — อนุสาวรีย์ประชาธิปไตยเป็นผลงานการออกแบบของหม่อมหลวงปุ่ม มาลากุล และควบคุมกำกับการก่อสร้างโดยศาสตราจารย์ศิลป์ พีระศรี อนุสาวรีย์มีรายละเอียดมากมายหลายอย่างที่ทำให้ต้องไปเดินชมรอบๆ นอกจากการเป็นสัญลักษณ์ให้ระลึกถึงเหตุการณ์เปลี่ยนแปลงการปกครองมาเป็นระบอบประชาธิปไตยแล้ว อนุสาวรีย์แห่งนี้ยังเป็นจุดเริ่มต้นของถนนพหลโยธินและนับเป็นหลักกิโลเมตรที่ศูนย์ของทางหลวงสายประธานของประเทศไทยด้วย

10. According to reports, 94% of Thai people are Buddhists, and there are almost half a million monks in the Kingdom. If you are up around 6 AM, you’re likely to see monks in their saffron colored robes, walking around areas near their temple for their daily alms rounds. Around 8 AM, they meet in the temple for their daily prayer and meditation session. For monks, prayers are for the happiness of themselves and other beings, and to ask for help on their journey towards enlightenment. It is of secondary importance to meditation, which is the path that leads to the end suffering, according to Buddhist teachings. After a couple hours of chanting, praying and meditation, around 11AM, the monks will eat the food that was collected earlier.
The photo above shows the Chedi that sits atop the Golden Mountain, inside of the Wat Saket compound, which was completed during the reign of King Rama V. It contains a bone replica of the Buddha, which was brought from India. The Golden Mountain is 63.6 meters high and is reached by climbing 344 steps. From the top you can see a great view of Bangkok.
๑๐. จากอนุสาวรีย์ประชาธิปไตยไปทางทิศตะวันออก จะเห็น “ภูเขาทอง” ที่ตั้งอยู่ในวัดสระเกศ ภูเขาทองเริ่มสร้างขึ้นในสมัยพระบาทสมเด็จพระนั่งเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัวเพื่อเป็นปูชนียสถานในพระนครเช่นเดียวกับกรุงศรีอยุธยาที่มีวัดภูเขาทอง อยู่ตรงจุดบรรจบระหว่างคลองบางลำพูกับคลองมหานาค แต่ประสบปัญหาในการก่อสร้างจึงต้องยุติชั่วคราว และเริ่มการสร้างใหม่อีกครั้งในสมัยพระบาทสมเด็จพระจอมเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัว และเปลี่ยนชื่อเป็น “บรมบรรพต” โดยมีลักษณะเป็นภูเขาที่มีเจดีย์ตั้งอยู่ด้านบน มีบันไดเวียนขึ้น-ลงสองทาง การก่อสร้างแล้วเสร็จในรัชสมัยพระบาทสมเด็จพระจุลจอมเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัว และบรรจุพระบรมสารีริกธาตุจากเมืองกบิลพัศดุ์ใว้ในองค์พระเจดีย์ เจดีย์ภูเขาทองปัจจุบันมีขนาดสูงจากฐานถึงยอด ๖๓.๖ เมตร มีบันไดทอดขึ้นเป็นบันไดเวียน ๓๔๔ ขั้น เมื่อเดินถึงลานพระเจดีย์ด้านบนสามารถมองทัศนียภาพกรุงเทพมหานครได้รอบ

11. Most German cities with more than one train station, call the principal station Hauptbahnhof meaning “main station”, its pronunciation is difficult for Thais so they adapted it to the word that they could easily remember: “Hua Lampong”. This is believed to be the origin of the Bangkok Railway Station’s name, which was built in the reign of King Rama V. It is the main train station in Bangkok and looks like the Frankfurt Main Hauptbahnhof in Germany. Its creation was an international endeavor as the engineers were German, the architecture style is from Italy and the construction company was from England. The passenger hall has a high curved roof decorated with stained glass windows.
Since 2004, the station has been connected by an underground passage to the Metropolitan Rapid Transit (MRT) subway system’s Hua Lampong Station.
๑๑. เคยเห็นคำนี้มั้ย “Hauptbahnhof” — งงล่ะสิ .. ออกเสียงยังไง?! แต่นี่เป็นอีกหนึ่งทฤษฎีที่มีความเป็นไปได้ในการเรียกเพี้ยนมาเป็นชื่อ “หัวลำโพง” ซึ่งมีชื่อปรากฏในเอกสารในอดีตมาก่อนการสร้างสถานีรถไฟหัวลำโพง หรือ สถานีรถไฟกรุงเทพ ที่เริ่มสร้างในสมัยพระบาทสมเด็จพระจุลจอมเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัว และมีต้นแบบมาจากสถานีรถไฟแฟรงก์เฟิร์ตในสหพันธ์สาธารณรัฐเยอรมนี ขณะที่ในภาษาเยอรมันแปลคำนี้ว่า “สถานีรถไฟหลัก” เราลองไปค้นหาภาพสถานีรถไฟแฟรงก์เฟิร์ตในกูเกิ้ล หน้าตาออกมาคล้ายกันมากๆ แม้สถานีรถไฟหัวลำโพงจะสร้างโดยบริษัทจากประเทศอังกฤษ แต่วิศกรเป็นชาวเยอรมัน หัวรถจักรและเหล็กกล้าก็สั่งมาจากเยอรมนีเช่นกัน ในส่วนตัวอาคารก็อยู่ภายใต้การดูแลของสถาปนิกจากอิตาลี มีบันไดและเสาเป็นหินอ่อนพร้อมลวดลายปูนปั้น ประดับกระจกสีช่วยเพิ่มความสว่าง และมีนาฬิกาตั้งอยู่กลางส่วนโค้งของอาคารด้านในและด้านนอกสถานีรถไฟเป็นสัญลักษณ์แห่งหนึ่ง งานออกแบบผสมผสานพร้อมให้บริการด้านการขนส่งมวลชน รองรับผู้โดยสารจากทั่วสารทิศของประเทศไทย ยิ่งมีรถไฟฟ้ามหานครมาเชื่อมต่อการคมนาขนส่งเข้าด้วย

12. The Erawan Shrine is located by the Grand Hyatt Erawan Hotel, in the center of Bangkok’s business district. It contains a statue of Phra Phrom, the Thai representation of the Hindu god of creation, Brahma. This shrine was erected at the advice of an astrologer to ward off evil spirits that had delayed the completion of a hotel, that has since been torn down and replaced by the Grand Hyatt Erawan Hotel. Around the shrine are many vendors selling offering objects such as flower garlands, wooden elephant statues, and incense. Dancers can also be hired to ask, or thank Brahma for favors. This shrine is busy at all hours of the day and night as worshipers come and go. Occasionally, a person will promise to dance naked in front of the shrine if a certain wish is granted, but I’ve never witnessed this.
๑๒. และแลนด์มาร์คสุดท้าย “ศาลท้าวมหาพรหม” ตามประวัติโรงแรมเอราวัณได้กำหนดก่อสร้างขึ้นและเกิดอุบัติเหตุขึ้นมากมาย เนื่องจากวางศิลาฤกษ์ของโรงแรมไม่ถูกต้อง อีกทั้งชื่อของโรงแรมนั้น เป็นชื่อของช้างทรงของพระอินทร์ เป็นชื่อที่ศักดิ์สิทธิ์จำเป็นต้องมีการบวงสรวง จึงได้ตั้งศาลพระพรหม ซึ่งถือเป็นศาลพระพรหมศาลแรกที่มีขนาดใหญ่ ปัจจุบันผู้ที่เคารพศรัทธาทั้งชาวไทยและต่างประเทศหลั่งไหลมาสักการะ ท้าวมหาพรหมตลอดทั้งวันทั้งคืน บ้างก็จ้างนางรำ บ้างก็รำแก้ผ้า บ้างก็นำรูปปั้นรูปสลักต่าง ๆ มาถวายตามคำบนบานศาลกล่าว
