TCDC Chiang Mai: ศูนย์สร้างสรรค์งานออกแบบ
Every now and then I Google our THAILAND 180º book, just for the heck of it. A few weeks ago I was pleasantly surprised to find that it was on the shelf at the Chiang Mai branch of the TCDC, the Thailand Creative and Design Center.
I felt REALLY honored to be a part of this so we contacted them and planned for a visit. (because our books are not only for tourism, but are the culmination of Khun Edward’s knowledge, experience, technique, ideas and creativity. Since I work with him, I can tell that he is an artistic photographer NOT a shutterbug! Once he sees a subject, he knows what he wants and finds a way to frame it and bring it to life. ~Fon’s edit)
Since it’s located behind the Muang Mai Market which we wanted to photograph for our upcoming CHIANG MAI 180º book, we decided to go to the market first. This proved to be somewhat of a bad idea as it had rained the night before and I arrived at the TCDC with numerous clumps of mud on my pants. More about this and our visit to the market in our blog next week.

TCDC เชียงใหม่ ตั้งอยู่หลังกาดเมืองใหม่ ซึ่งกาดเมืองใหม่เป็นเป้าหมายในการถ่ายภาพของเราพอดี เลยมีโอกาสไปเดินชมบรรยากาศยามเช้าที่คึกคักแต่ชื้นแฉะเพราะฝนตกตอนเช้ามืด ขากางเกงและรองเท้าเปื้อนคราบดำปื้นเลย พอเดินช้อปปิ้งเสร็จ เอ้ย! สำรวจพื้นที่เสร็จ ก็เดินข้ามถนนมาถึง TCDC …

คุณเอ็ดเวิร์ดบอกว่ารู้สึกเป็นเกียรติอย่างยิ่งที่ TCDC เชียงใหม่ ได้คัดเลือกหนังสือ THAILAND 180º สำหรับห้องสมุดเฉพาะด้านการออกแบบ เพราะหนังสือของเราไม่ได้มีเป้าหมายเพียงเพื่อส่งเสริมการท่องเที่ยวเท่านั้น หากแต่ต้องการผนวกองค์ความรู้, ประสบการณ์, เทคนิคการถ่ายภาพ และสร้างสรรค์ถ่ายทอดออกมาเป็นภาพถ่ายที่แสดงองค์ประกอบของการออกแบบ ทั้งเนื้อหาในภาพ (subject) และ องค์ประกอบรายรอบ (object) ไปพร้อมๆ กัน ดิฉันสามารถบอกทุกท่านได้เลยว่า คุณเอ็ดเวิร์ดเป็นช่างภาพมืออาชีพ ไม่ใช่นักถ่ายภาพ ทุกจุดหมายปลายทางที่เราวางแผนไว้ เมื่อเดินทางถึงที่หมายและคุณเอ็ดเวิร์ดเห็น subject ปุ๊บ เขาอ่านออกและรู้ว่าต้องการให้ภาพออกมาแบบไหนในทันที

The TCDC resource center is a treasure trove of creativity which has tons of books, material database and samples, workshop, exhibitions, and business planning guidance. After checking in and clearing some high security, we found ourselves in a beautiful spacious library filled with books on art and design. What a great place to pass hours looking at books in an inspirational atmosphere! My creative juices immediately started flowing and I imagined large prints of our work on their walls. Eventually I signed our book and hammed it up for a photo. I think I noticed the security guard cringe a bit, as I’m sure writing in books is usually prohibited. 😉
ในความเห็นส่วนตัวของเรา ที่นี่เป็น “คลังแห่งอภิมหาสมบัติทางไอเดียสร้างสรรค์” โดยเฉพาะห้องสมุดที่มีหนังสือเยอะมากๆ พื้นที่ไม่ใหญ่แต่อัดแน่นด้วยหนังสือดีมีคุณภาพทั้งนั้น อีกทั้งมีบรรยากาศช่วยกระตุ้นความคิด มีสื่อมัลติมีเดีย พร้อมฐานข้อมูลด้านการออกแบบ WGSN และฐานข้อมูลด้านการตลาด GMID — !OMG! บอกเลยว่าตาเป็นประกายระยิบระยับ อยากหยิบมาดูทุกเล่ม ถ้าให้มาทุกวัน นั่งอ่านทั้งวัน สัก 3-4 เดือนก็อ่านไม่หมด … เล่าเสมือนว่าตัวเองเป็นหนอนหนังสือเลย เราไม่ใช่หนอนหนังสือ อ่านหนังสือไม่กี่บรรทัดก็หลับ เข้าห้องสมุดแล้วง่วงนอนทันที แต่พอมาเจอบรรยากาศที่นี่เข้าไปแบบว่าสมองมันแล่น นัยน์ตาเบิกกว้าง ความกระตือรือร้นมันสูบฉีด เกิดความกระหายในไอเดียความรู้ แค่เดินรอบๆ ขอถ่ายภาพนิดหน่อยเพื่อมาเขียนบล๊อก แป๊บเดียวก็ผ่านไปเป็นชั่วโมงแล้ว เราจินตาการไปว่าคงจะสักวันที่ได้จัดแสดงนิทรรศการผลงานภาพถ่ายแบบใหญ่โตเต็มผนัง บรรยายและถ่ายภาพร่วมกับผู้เข้าชมพร้อมแจกลายเซ็นต์ ^^

In addition to our book, they have over 34,000 volumes of design publications, more than 210 periodicals, over 3,000 items of design resources in multimedia formats, and online databases on art history, design and marketing. Plus design related exhibits, lectures, etc. They offer both day passes and memberships. We’ll be getting our membership cards soon.

About the Authors
Photographer George Edward Giunca, and his Thai wife, Apisatha, have traveled around Thailand armed with a circular fisheye lens to create a photo essay on the rich cultural diversity, and abundant natural beauty of the Kingdom of Thailand. Fleeing from angry water buffaloes, slapping huge mosquitoes, watching exotic festivals and religious rituals, gorging on delicious spicy food, applying aloe vera cream to sunburned skin, wading through rice paddies, getting drenched to the bone by heavy monsoon rains, and gawking at breath-taking scenery; made it a journey of epic proportions! The result is the book, THAILAND 180º. Later, they traveled extensively through Myanmar, Malaysia, and India, gathering massive collections of 180º photos. They currently live in Bangkok.
