The Jantar Mantar are a collection of astronomical instruments that were built for Maharaja Jai Singh II at his new capital in Jaipur, India, between 1727 and 1734. These fabulous instruments are made of masonry, marble, and bronze. If you’re like me, you’ll want to allow plenty of time to view the nineteen instruments that are included in this collection. These 16th Century tools were extremely accurate and can measure time, predict upcoming eclipses, follow star constellations, as well as planets and calculate the heavenly bodies’ distance from Earth.
The largest of these instruments is the sundial or Samrat Yantra that is 90 feet tall. This is the largest sundial of its kind and is capable of measuring time with an accuracy of 2 seconds, using a shadow cast from the sun.

Fleeing from angry water buffaloes, slapping huge mosquitoes, watching exotic festivals and religious rituals, gorging on delicious spicy food, applying aloe vera cream to sunburned skin, wading through rice paddies, getting drenched to the bone by heavy monsoon rains, and gawking at breath-taking scenery; made it a journey of epic proportions! The result is the book, THAILAND 180º. Later, they traveled extensively through Myanmar, Malaysia, and India, gathering a massive collections of 180º photos. They currently live in Chiang Mai where they continue to blog and are now working on a CHIANG MAI 180º book.
