When Princes Ride Ponies-The Buad Luk Kaew Festival
This story began about a month ago, when upon leaving our village gate, we saw signs along the side of the road. I had never heard of a Buad Loog Kaew festival, so my wife briefly described it to me. “They dress boys up like princes and parade them on the backs of ponies to a temple for ordination into the monkhood?” I asked incredulously. This I have to see and photograph! This festival originated perhaps centuries ago when Thai Yai people who are a close Buddhist neighbors migrated into what is today, the Kingdom of Thailand. As it turns out, the ceremony began at Wat Roi Jan and ended at Wat Sahussakoon (Wat Pun Tao) which was just a few miles from our house in Hang Dong, Chiang Mai. Getting information about the festival was easy, as we could hear the daily announcements from our house, thanks to the temple loudspeakers.

On the morning of the festival, we were informed by the daily temple announcement that the head shaving ceremony had taken place earlier that morning. The boys would spend a few hours resting, before traveling to Wat Sahussakoon in the afternoon. We traveled to the temple early, staked out a great spot and enjoyed meatballs on a stick and refreshments while we waited for the boys to arrive. Some hours later, amid the clammer of drums, pi (double reed oboe-like instrument), and gongs, the ordination candidates arrived, dressed in white clothes.
ช่วงปลายเดือนมีนาคม-ต้นเดือนเมษายน เป็นช่วงปิดเทอมของเด็กๆ ทำให้นึกถึงประเพณีงาน “บวชลูกแแก้ว” หรือ “ปอยส่างลอง” โดยเฉพาะภาคเหนือและภาคตะวันตกของไทยที่สืบทอดประเพณีการบรรพชาเป็นสามเณรของชาวไตหรือไทยใหญ่ เพื่อศึกษาพุทธธรรม อีกทั้งเป็นการทดแทนคุณบิดามารดา

Immediately the boys were assigned makeup artists who set to work. First, the face was covered with white powder, eyebrows were drawn, then blush was applied to the cheeks followed by lipstick. Next, they were dressed in Thai Yai royal attire. It was fun watching the reactions of the parents as well as the boy as this transformation took place. I was very impressed at the skill of the artists who performed their duties quickly.
เราตื่นเต้นมากเมื่อทราบข่าวงานบวชลูกแก้วบนหลังม้าของวัดร้อยจันทร์ อ.หางดง จ.เชียงใหม่ โดยก่อนแห่ลูกแก้วนั้นได้มีการทำพิธีปลงผมโกนศีรษะและคิ้ว จากนั้นก็แต่งองค์ทรงเครื่องคล้ายเจ้าชายไทยใหญ่ ประหนึ่งการจำลองพุทธประวัติเมื่อครั้งเจ้าชายสิทธัตถะทรงม้ากัณฑกะมุ่งตรงไปยังแม่น้ำอโนมานที ก่อนจะประทับนั่งบนกองทราย ทรงตัดพระเมาลีด้วยพระขรรค์ และเปลี่ยนชุดผ้ากาสาวพัตร์ และให้นายฉันทะ นำเครื่องทรงกลับพระนคร ก่อนที่พระองค์จะเสด็จออกมหาภิเนษกรมณ์ (การเสด็จออกเพื่อคุณอันยิ่งใหญ่) หลังจากแต่งอลองแก่ลูกแก้วเสร็จแล้วจะนำลูกแก้วนั่งบนบ่าหรืออุ้มเข้าไปในโบสถ์ เนื่องจากมีข้อห้ามมิให้ส่างลองหรือลูกแก้วเหยียบพื้น จากนั้นพระสงฆ์ให้ศีลให้พรและกราบลาพระภายในในโบสถ์วัดสหัสคูณ เพื่อเตรียมเคลื่อนขบวนออกไปยังวัดร้อยจันทร์

Once they were dressed, the boys were carried on shoulders to the temple, for their feet must not touch the ground. Once in the temple, the abbot led them in prayer and a blessing.

A short time later, the princes lined up on the steps of the temple for an official photograph and the abbot gave some incite into the program the boys would perform as novice monks throughout the next 18 days. Afterward, the young princes are carried to a pony, on which they rode to another temple, Wat Roi Jun in a parade procession.

Once again, the sounds of the Thai Yai band filled the air! The ponies danced to the rhythm as worshipers tossed lucky coins, puffed rice, and flower petals symbolizing abundance into the air. About a mile and a half later, the boys arrived at Wat Roi Jun and were carried into the ordination hall.

Once inside, the boys ask the abbot to be ordained, shed their luxurious royal attire and don the saffron robes of a novice monk. This commemorates the life of Buddha when he forsook his princely life in order to study and obtain freedom from suffering and enlightenment. For the next eighteen days, the novice monks will follow the laws of a novice monk, learn to meditate, collect alms, assistant in cleaning the temple grounds. In addition to obtaining special boon or merit for themselves and their parents, this gives the young men a chance to learn to become responsible young adults that will find it rewarding to contribute to society once they return to their normal life. I was impressed to learn that as a part of this year’s program, they will visit a prison to comfort the inmates and see first-hand the results of misdeeds.
การบรรพชาเป็นสามเณรภาคฤดูร้อนครั้งนี้มีกำหนด ๑๘ วัน ระหว่างเป็นสามเณร จะถือศีล ทำวัตร ปฎิบัติธรรม นั่งสมาธิ ออกเดินธุดงค์ ตลอดจนซักผ้าเอง ล้างห้องน้ำ กวาดลานวัด อันเป็นการฝึกวินัย และนอกจากนี้ยังมีกิจกรรมเดินทางไปศึกษาดูชีวิตความเป็นอยู่ของผู้ต้องขังในเรือนจำเพื่อให้เห็นและตระหนักในการมุ่งมั่นทำความดี ไม่ประพฤติปฏิบัติไม่ดีไม่ถูกต้อง เพื่อเยาวชนเหล่านี้จะได้เติบโตเป็นผู้ใหญ่ที่มีความรับผิดชอบและเป็นคนดีของสังคมต่อไป … ชมคลิป “งานบวชลูกแก้ว วัดร้อยจันทร์” ด้านล่างนี้นะคะ … น่ารัก สนุกสนาน อิ่มบุญกันถ้วนหน้าค่ะ
