Wat Suan Mokkh in Surat Thani, Thailand
Even after living in Thailand for over 12 years, I never get tired of exploring new temples. Especially the ones outside of the large cities. Believe me, every temple has its own set of treasures! If you follow our blog or get a chance to see some of them, you already know what I mean.
Wat Suan Mokkh in Surat Thani is a prime example. One of the buildings in the temple compound contains paintings from all over the world. The paintings are meant to teach important lessons from various religions. The masterpiece below titled “The Fish Hook Woman“, warns men of the “Dangerous intentions of wayward women.” 😉 If you look around the 180º photograph below, you can get a glimpse of some of the other paintings. They’re all worthy of a second glance and a visit to the temple.
This is a forest temple that was founded by the famous monk Buddhadasa Bhikkhu. The temple’s name translates to “The grove of the power of liberation”. Buddhadasa Bhikkhu became a monk at the age of 20 and spent much of his life writing books about Buddhism that are considered references books on the subject. They are written with great clarity and depth befitting a man that was a lifelong scholar of all forms of Buddhism as well as other major religions. His last project and perhaps his crowning achievement was to establish this International Dharma Hermitage in which people from all over the world can study the ‘Truth of nature’ as well as learn and practice meditation and mind development. The center offers 10-day retreats in this quiet forest setting for people looking for a deeper meaning to life. If you’re interested, just follow this link.
