Island hopping around the tropical islands of Thailand builds memories that will last for a lifetime and photos that will leave your friends green with envy. The Kingdom of Thailand
We began the trip with a flight to Phuket and were blown away with the view from the plane, as we approached the airport.

First Stop: Phuket
Islands and blue-green water everywhere! We had done a lot of research to try to find the most beautiful and interesting islands, but it was clear that we would need a lot of time to visit as many as possible, and maybe discover a new angle or two. After landing in Phuket, we headed for Patong Beach.

Phuket is a beautiful place, it was getting towards late afternoon when I saw a couple of parasailors in the distance. This would have been an easy shot to capture with a telephoto zoom lens, but proved to be quite challenging with a fisheye. I had to get so close to the action, that it was a bit dangerous both for me and them. Several times I thought I had the shot, only to find upon review that the parasail and its riders were tiny and the background was cluttered. For nearly an hour and a half, I chased after them as they took-off and landed, with the sun and my heart sinking lower all the time. Landings were really dangerous, so I concentrated on take-offs, running faster and getting closer each time. After several hundred images, everything came together and I captured the image you see above. No cropping. No retouching.

On to the Tropical Islands of Thailand’s Phang Nga Bay
The following morning we took a speedboat to Koh Yao Noi, an island in Phang Nga Bay. We arrived at Koh Yao Island Resort and were once again amazed by beauty. An infinity pool overlooked the bay and we could see several islands dotting the sea. We arranged a private boat tour for early the next morning, enjoyed a postcard-like tropical sunset and had a magnificent feast of char-broiled seafood. The next morning, we were greeted with a heart stopping sunrise, as we boarded the boat. The boat was a work of art in it’s own right, a well maintained fishing boat and it felt like the day was going to be perfect. After we had traveled for an hour, clouds started to roll in and unleashed a heavy monsoon rain. We cancelled the trip and the captain skillfully navigated the boat back to the resort. We tried again the second morning, and this time the light was even better, with a few polite clouds in the sky. I laid prone on the front of the boat, using the masthead as a foreground and clicked off one gorgeous shot after another as we threaded our way through the islands.

A Misson to James Bond Island
A mild storm came and went, as we continued, finally reaching, “James Bond Island.” Fans of 007 will recognize this as Scaramanga’s hideout, from the movie, The Man with the Golden Gun. After a short walk, I shot the image above through a clearing, then continued walking, until I was at the waters edge. I waded out until the water was up to my neck and tried several different angles, then begged the captain to maneuver the boat close to the formation, but in the end, I chose the very first shot. -Sometimes getting too close to a subject with a fisheye distorts it to the point where it’s unrecognizable.

The Fabulous Floating Soccer Field
The book contains many photos from Phang Nga, but for the last picture today, I’ll share the most unusual one: Around noon we reached the very photogenic Fisherman’s Village, a small island inhabited by Muslims. We decided to explore before eating and wandered around a labyrinth of piers past a school, food stalls and souvenir stands, before coming to a sign with an arrow that read “Soccer Field”. Huh? On the sea? Following the arrow we came to the Soccer “Field” above. Wow! Click-click and back to the retaurant. No matter how much research we put into our trip planning, there’s almost always a surprise waiting for us. And that’s why I enjoy my travels so much! Go to Part Two

About the Authors
Photographer George Edward Giunca, and his Thai wife, Apisatha, have traveled around Thailand armed with a circular fisheye lens to create a photo essay on the rich cultural diversity, and abundant natural beauty of the Kingdom of Thailand. Fleeing from angry water buffaloes, slapping huge mosquitoes, watching exotic festivals and religious rituals, gorging on delicious spicy food, applying aloe vera cream to sunburned skin, wading through rice paddies, getting drenched to the bone by heavy monsoon rains, and gawking at breath-taking scenery; made it a journey of epic proportions! The result is the book, THAILAND 180º. Later, they traveled extensively through Myanmar, Malaysia, and India, gathering a massive collections of 180º photos. They currently live in Chiang Mai where they continue to blog and are now working on a CHIANG MAI 180º book.
