Happy Birthday Sunthorn Phu! Born on June 26th in 1786
June 26th marks the birthday of Thailand’s most famous poet, Sunthorn Phu. Bangkok was just 4 years old when Sunthorn Phu was born, in 1786, and as he grew up, he became renowned for his epic poetry, which also recounted history from this period. On the 200th anniversary of his birth, Sunthorn Phu was honored by UNESCO as a great world poet.

A Phii Seua Samut Statue That Towers Over the Island Landscape
Ah, The Life of a Poet
His most famous poem is a 30,000-line epic masterpiece, entitled, Phra Aphai Mani. The image above shows a famous scene from this poem in which a sea ogress named Phii Seua Samut, professes her love for Prince Aphai, a central character in the story. This is a towering statue that sits beside Wat Phra Yai on Samui Island in the Thai province of Surat Thani. We just happened to stop by as the monks were leaving for their alms rounds, adding some color and scale to the photo.
Sunthorn Phu’s life was everything that you would expect from a famous poet, including residing in the palace as a royal poet for two Thai kings, an involvement in a major love scandal, lots of marriages that ended in divorce, a prison term, alcoholism, time spent as a monk in a monastery, and all the rises and falls from grace that could be expected from such a lifestyle. You may, in fact, enjoy reading about his life, as much as you do his poetry!

คนไทยเรารู้จักท่านดีอยู่แล้วจึงขอข้ามประวัติของท่าน มากล่าวถึงเรื่อง “พระอภัยมณี” ตัวละครหนึ่งที่น่าสนใจ คือ “นางผีเสื้อสมุทร” นางผีเสื้อสมุทรเป็นยักษ์ อาศัยอยู่ในถ้ำกลางทะเล สามารถแปลงร่างเป็นหญิงสาวสวยได้ ชาติก่อนได้พรจากพระอิศวรให้สามารถถอดดวงใจใส่ไว้ในก้อนหิน นางจึงกำเริบใจไปต่อสู้กับพระเพลิงและถูกไฟกรดเผาจนร่างมอดไหม้ กลายเป็นปีศาจสิงอยู่ในก้อนหินที่ฝากดวงใจไว้ วันหนึ่งนางเห็นพระอภัยมณีก็เกิดหลงรักจึงแอบลักพาไปอยู่กับนางในถ้ำ จนมีลูกชายด้วยกันชื่อสินสมุทร ต่อมาพระอภัยมณีกับสินสมุทรก็พากันหนีไป นางผีเสื้อสมุทรออกติดตามไปด้วยความรัก แต่แล้วนางก็ต้องตายด้วยเสียงปี่ของพระอภัยมณี ร่างของนางก็กลับกลายเป็นหินอยู่ที่ชายหาดริมทะเลนั่นเอง

About the Authors
Photographer George Edward Giunca, and his Thai wife, Apisatha, have traveled around Thailand armed with a circular fisheye lens to create a photo essay on the rich cultural diversity, and abundant natural beauty of the Kingdom of Thailand. Fleeing from angry water buffaloes, slapping huge mosquitoes, watching exotic festivals and religious rituals, gorging on delicious spicy food, applying aloe vera cream to sunburned skin, wading through rice paddies, getting drenched to the bone by heavy monsoon rains, and gawking at breath-taking scenery; made it a journey of epic proportions! The result is the book, THAILAND 180º. Later, they traveled extensively through Myanmar, Malaysia, and India, gathering a massive collections of 180º photos. They currently live in Chiang Mai where they continue to blog and are now working on a CHIANG MAI 180º book.
