The making of a Candle Float for the Ubon Ratchathani Candle Festival ~ งานประเพณีแห่เทียนเข้าพรรษา อุบลราชธานี
The rainy season is officially here, along with the biggest merit-making festival in Thailand, The Candle Festival. If you’re in Ubon Ratchathani this month, be sure to see the Candle Festival at the Thung Si Mueang Park. This festival dates back to the days before electricity, where candles were given to monks at the start of Buddhist lent, or Khao Pansa, a time in which monks remain in their monastery for three months without traveling. Since 1927, this festival has grown into a parade of huge candle floats, Northeastern bands, and dance groups in traditional costumes. A contest is held and an award is given to the most beautiful. Let’s take a peek inside a few studios where floats are being created, and learn more about their craft.
ฤดูฝนมาเยือนอย่างเป็นทางการพร้อมกับงานบุญใหญ่ “ประเพณีแห่เทียนพรรษา” นำต้นเทียนไปถวายแด่พระภิกษุสงฆ์ในวันเข้าพรรษา เพื่อพระสงฆ์จะได้ใช้ยามปฏิบัติกิจขณะจำพรรษาเป็นเวลาสามเดือนเมื่อครั้งที่ยังไม่มีไฟฟ้าใช้ จนสืบสานมาเป็นประเพณีที่ปฏิบัติมาถึงปัจจุบัน ซึ่งในภาคอีสานส่วนใหญ่จะจัดเป็นขบวนแห่พร้อมนางรำในชุดแต่งกายที่สวยงาม และเมื่อกล่าวถึงการแห่เทียนพรรษาก็นึกถึงอุบลราชธานีขึ้นมาทันที ..แต่ก่อนจะมาเป็นขบวนที่สวยงามอลังการตระการตาจนเป็นที่สนใจจากทั้งชาวไทยและชาวต่างชาติมากมาย เดี๋ยวจะเล่าคร่าวๆ เกี่ยวกับการประดิษฐ์เทียนพรรษาของจังหวัดอุบลราชธานี ว่าเขาเตรียมงานกันเป็นเดือนๆ มีความร่วมมือร่วมใจของคนในแต่ละท้องถิ่นอำเภอและชุมชนที่ส่วนมากมีวัดเป็นศูนย์กลางในการรวมกลุ่มเพื่อประดิษฐ์ชิ้นงานสร้างสรรค์ จนเกิดความร่วมมือระดับจังหวัดอันมีส่วนร่วมจากคนอุบลฯ, วัด, หน่วยงานรัฐ, และภาคเอกชนร่วมสนับสนุนส่งเสริม มีกิจกรรม “เพลินหัตถศิลป์ ถิ่นคนทำเทียน” เยือนชุมชนคนทำเทียน และงานเทศกาลศิลปะเทียนนานาชาติ ณ พิพิธภัณฑสถานแห่งชาติอุบลราชธานี

Inside a Studio, the Work on a Candle Float Begins
At the beginning of construction, a frame is made and then attached to large flatbed trailer. Wood, and wire mesh, vegetation such as rice husks, are attached to the framework to add contours to the shapes.
ไปดูเบื้องหลังการทำงานในชุมชนคนทำเทียนกันค่ะ ช่างผู้มีประสบการณ์และความชำนาญได้ออกแบบและถอดลายเรียบร้อยแล้ว ก็จะเริ่มลงมือทำโครงสร้างก่อน ส่วนมากใช้วัสดุจากธรรมชาติ เช่น แผ่นไม้กระดาน ไม้ไผ่ ฟาง กาบมะพร้าว และใช้ลวดประกอบกับปูนปลาสเตอร์เพื่อขึ้นรูปร่าง โดยการออกแบบนี้เน้นโครงเรื่องชาดก, พุทธประวัติ, และสัตว์ป่าหิมพานต์ ผสมผสานศิลปะแบบไทย

Teamwork is Key to Finishing a Float in Time for the Parade
While one part of the team is working on the frame, many others are molding wax shapes, cleaning, and sorting these according to shape and size. This type of technic has to use the real wax for flexibility and also needs gazillions of pieces.
การประดิษฐ์ต้นเทียนและขบวนรถแห่เทียนนี้เน้นการทำงานเป็นทีม เนื่องจากการทำต้นเทียนพรรษาเป็นงานที่ละเอียด ใช้เวลานาน และใช้ความอุตสาหะอย่างมาก อีกทั้งการประดิษฐ์ “เทียนพรรษาประเภทติดพิมพ์” เป็นงานละเอียดอ่อน ช่างต้องคำนวณจำนวนของชิ้นเทียนให้ดี และต้องใช้จำนวนคนมาก กำหนดแบ่งตารางเวลาในแต่ละขั้นตอนเพื่อให้เสร็จสมบูรณ์สวยงามทันเข้าร่วมการประกวด ที่สำคัญคือเทียนประเภทนี้ต้องใช้ขี้ผึ้งแท้ในการทำดอกผึ้งเพราะมีความเหนียวนุ่ม

Cold Water Please, I’m Melting!
If you were wondering how one keeps a float covered in wax from melting in under Thailand’s hot tropical sun, here’s your answer! As the parade progresses and the sun starts to make everyone drip sweat, members of the team take turns escorting the float and spraying it with cold water.
ในระหว่างการเคลื่อนขบวนรถแห่เทียนนี้ จำเป็นต้องมีทีมงานเดินตามขบวนเพื่อฉีดน้ำเย็นรดเลี้ยงไว้ไม่ให้ขี้ผึ้งละลาย โดยเฉพาะประเภทเทียนติดพิมพ์ที่ทำจากขี้ผึ้งแท้ อย่างที่เห็นในภาพข้างบนนี้
We really had fun, made some friends and added real value to this whole experience by meeting some of the team members and watch their float transform. If you can plan to arrive at this festival several days early, and hire a local driver or tour guide. You won’t be disappointed.

July 19th, 2016 : Starts at 7.00am. All the floats will be parked on the road around the Ubon Ratchathani Kindergarten.
July 20th, 2016 : 8.30-Noon. Official starting time of the parade
July 21st – 22nd : The prize-winning candle floats will be parked on the road around the Ubon Ratchathani Kindergarten.
