The Candle Festival at Ubon Ratchathani ~ ประเพณีแห่เทียนพรรษา อุบลราชธานี
Some History
This festival dates back to the days before electricity, when candles were given to monks at the start of Buddhist lent, or Khao Pansa, a time in which monks remain in their monastery for three months without traveling. Since 1927, this festival has grown into a parade of huge candle floats, Northeastern bands, and dance groups in traditional costumes. A contest is held and an award is given to the most beautiful.
ต่อจากบล็อกที่แล้ว เราพาไปเยือนชุมชนคนทำเทียน จ. อุบลราชธานี กันมาแล้ว … หากท่านใดมีโอกาสได้ไปจังหวัดอุบลราชธานีในเดือนกรกฎาคม ต้องไปชมการทำเทียนและ/หรือ ประเพณีแห่เทียนพรรษาให้ได้เลยนะ เพราะประเพณีแห่เทียนพรรษาของที่นี่งดงามมาก อีกทั้งขบวนยังมีการฟ้อนรำในชุดแต่งกายของกลุ่มชนต่างๆ ที่สวยงาม และยังมีการประกวดมากมายหลายอย่าง .. การเลือกภาพมาลงหนังสือ THAILAND 180º สำหรับประเพณีนี้เลือกยากมากเลย เพราะขบวนแห่สวยงามอลังการทุกขบวน ยิ่งสาวอุบลก็งามหลายๆ ในบล็อกนี้จึงนำภาพขบวนแห่เทียนพรรษาจากหนังสือ THAILAND 180º มาให้ชมกัน

Arrive a Week Early
The floats are created by different temples, districts or other institutions all with the help of volunteers, led by some of the top artisans in the Kingdom. By arriving in Ubon a few days early, visitors can see the floats being made at different temples, except for a few “Top Secret” designs that are hidden until the parade. วัดในแต่ละชุมชนเป็นเสมือนศูนย์รวมใจ ดังจะสังเกตได้ว่าสถานที่ในการทำขบวนต้นเทียนนั้นมักจะเป็นที่วัด กลุ่มคนทำเทียนแลสมาชิกชุมชนนัดพบปะกันเพื่อร่วมตบแต่งประดับประดาต้นเทียนของชุมชนตนเอง ช่างศิลป์ถิ่นอีสานมีผลงานไม่น้อยหน้าใคร หลายชุมชนจะสรรหาช่างฝีมือฉกาจจากทั่วสารทิศดินแดนอีสานมาสร้างสรรค์ผลงานสุดอลังการ โดยส่วนใหญ่จะเก็บทีเด็ดไว้จนกว่าจะถึงวันแห่เทียนพรรษา นักท่องเที่ยวและบุคคลทั่วไปก็สามารถเข้าชมและมีส่วนร่วมในการทำชิ้นส่วนเพื่อประดับต้นเทียนได้ ณ วัดและชุมชนคนทำเทียนหลายแห่งที่เปิดให้เข้าชม

Construction Methods
Basically, there are three construction methods: molding, carving, and appliqué. Some of the floats begin with a wood frame or plaster covered wire mesh, before being covered with wax. Each float has it’s own theme, based on Thai, Buddhism, or Hindu folklore. We really enjoyed watching the work progress and talking to the different artists about their masterpieces. At many temples, monks were also working on the floats, and at one temple, Catholic Nuns were also helping. Most of the work seemed to be done at a very relaxed pace.
โดยทั่วไปจะแบ่งประเภทการประกวดขบวนต้นเทียนพรรษาเป็น ๓ ประเภท คือ ประเภทต้นเทียนโบราณ, ประเภทแกะสลัก, และประเภทติดพิมพ์ จากที่เราได้ไปชมมาบางแห่งใช้ไม้บ้าง เหล็กดัดบ้าง เพื่อขึ้นรูปและทาปูนปลาสเตอร์เป็นโครงร่างเพราะทำให้น้ำหนักโหลดบนรถนั้นเบาขึ้น ก่อนที่จะปิดตามด้วยเนื้อเทียน จากภาพด้านบน ช่างกำลังนาบเหล็กร้อนๆ ไฟลุกวาบ มือก็ลูบตามรอยต่อให้เนียนเรียบกลมกลึงเงางามแบบไม่กลัวมือพองกันเลย แน่นอนค่ะว่าขบวนแห่แต่ละขบวนได้นำเค้าโครงเรื่องราวทางพระพุทธศาสนาและสัตว์หิมพานต์มาผสมผสานศิลปะแบบไทย สร้างสรรค์และถ่ายทอดออกมาได้อย่างงดงามและมีคุณค่า ซึ่งทำให้เราได้ความรู้และเพลิดเพลินกับการเยี่ยมชม, ถ่ายภาพ, พูดคุยกับช่างและอาสาสมัครที่มาร่วมสร้างงานศิลป์ในบรรยากาศที่ผ่อนคลายเป็นกันเองมาก บางแห่งมีพระสงฆ์และสามเณรมาช่วยงาน บางแห่งก็มีแม่ชีคาทอลิกอาสาสมัครมาทำชิ้นส่วนตบแต่งขบวน รวมทั้งนักเรียนนักศึกษาและชาวบ้านแทบทุกคนล้วนมีส่วนร่วมในกิจกรรมประเพณีนี้

Keep a Flexible Schedule and Have Fun
A night parade takes place on the evening before the day parade, but last year it was very disorganized, and it was dark and raining by the time the floats finally appeared. Thai Festivals are a lot of fun, but often require flexibility in the form of arriving a few days early and sometimes staying a few extra days. Hiring a private van and driver is a good idea.
วันที่เราไปถ่ายภาพขบวนแห่ภาคกลางคืน (คืนก่อนวันแห่จริง) มีความสับสนเล็กน้อยเนื่องจากมีฝนลงมาเป็นพักๆ จึงทำให้ขบวนแห่ดำเนินไปอย่างล่าช้าและติดขัด แต่สุดท้ายก็ผ่านไปได้ ปกติงานเทศกาลประเพณีของไทยเรานั้นมีความสนุกสนานเพลิดเพลิน มีสีสัน มีความสวยงามละลานตามาก แต่บ่อยครั้งที่นักท่องเที่ยวอาจจะต้องเผื่อเวลาในการเดินทางบ้าง เพราะกำหนดการอาจมีการเปลี่ยนแปลง หรือ บางงานก็ไม่ได้มีกำหนดเวลาชัดเจนและไม่มีประกาศล่วงหน้าแบบเป็นเดือนเป็นปี ดังนั้นควรวางแผนให้เดินทางไปถึงก่อนวันงาน ๑-๒ วัน และกลับหลังงานเทศกาลสักวันสองวัน โดยเฉพาะนักท่องเที่ยวจากต่างประเทศที่วางแผนมางานประเพณีท้องถิ่นโดยเฉพาะ

The next morning’s official parade went off without a hitch, and although it rained of-and-on, it was still very hot, requiring teams to spray the floats with ice water to keep them from melting. After the official parade has ended, the prize-winning candle floats will be parked on the road around the Ubon Ratchathani Kindergarten.
Covering the parade with the fisheye lens was a dream. I could easily fit the whole float into the photo and was able to step in front of the FaceBook Camera Monkeys to get an unobstructed shot. I must say that the biggest irritation for the rest of the professionals and I, is this new bread of people that feel they have to constantly jump into scenes, and give a peace sign so they can check-in, every 5 minutes. Please FBCMs, remember that some of us rely on making great photos to earn a living, and we will be sharing our photos with the whole world, not just your little group of friends that will click the “like” button and forget they ever saw it. I must say that most of the professional photographers in Thailand are very well mannered and quick to jump in to get a shot and then move out, to make way for others, with a smile and a nod.
The event planners were smart to advise the tourists to visit the communities around Ubon Ratchathani for almost a month before the procession and also to exhibit the completed floats before and after the official procession day along the road. This is the time for smiling and giving the peace sign. ✌️🐒📷 🐒 🙏
เช้าวันถัดมา มีพิธีเปิดพร้อมขบวนแห่เทียนพรรษาอย่างเป็นทางการ เริ่มตั้งแต่ประมาณ ๙ นาฬิกา บริเวณทุ่งศรีเมือง เตรียมพร้อมรับฝนปรอยๆ แดดออกบ้าง อากาศอบอ้าวบ้าง หลายขบวนก็ได้เตรียมการไว้ก่อนแล้วโดยมีทีมงานเดินตามขบวนเพื่อฉีดน้ำเย็นเลี้ยงไว้ไม่ให้ต้นเทียนละลาย
หลังจากเสร็จสิ้นขบวนแห่อย่างเป็นทางการแล้ว ขบวนต้นเทียนที่ได้รับรางวัลทั้ง ๓ ประเภท จะมาจอดแสดงผลงานที่บริเวณถนนรอบโรงเรียนอนุบาลอุบลราชธานี ต่อในวันที่ ๒๑ – ๒๒ กรกฎาคม ๒๕๕๙ ส่วนขบวนอื่นๆ จะกลับไปแสดงผลงานที่วัดในชุมชนของตนอีก ๑-๒ เดือน
ณ ตรงนี้ เราขอแนะนำท่านทั้งหลาย ว่าทางผู้จัดงานได้วางแผนงานให้ท่านได้มาชื่นชม มาสัมผัสกันแบบเต็มๆ ก่อนวันงานเกือบหนึ่งเดือน พร้อมทั้งให้รถขบวนอวดโฉมสมบูรณ์กลางถนนหน้าโรงเรียนอนุบาลอุลราชธานีทั้งก่อนวันแห่และหลังวันแห่ ดังนั้น นั่นเป็นโอกาสที่เหมาะมากที่จะมาเซลฟี่ ถ่ายภาพจากมือถือ/เเท็บเล็ต/เท็บเบล็ต จะยกนิ้วโป้ง, ทำท่าคาวาอิ, ชูสองนิ้ว, ใช้ไม้เซลฟี่ แล้วยืนโพสต์จนรากงอก เพื่อโพสต์เฟสบุ้ค-ไอจี-ทวิตเตอร์ หรืออะไรก็ตาม จัดไปให้เต็มที่เลยค่ะ …แต่ในวันแห่เทียนพรรษาอย่างเป็นทางการนั้น ขณะที่เคลื่อนขบวนอยู่ …!!ขอร้องเถอะ!!… ไม่ต้องมาเซลฟี่นับนึง-ส่อง-ซั่ม (1-2-3) .. ขอให้ช่างภาพ สื่อมวลชน ทั้งในและต่างประเทศได้ทำงานกันอย่างเต็มที่ เพราะเขามีคนรอชมอีกเป็นล้านทั่วโลก เพื่อโปรโมทการท่องเที่ยวนำรายได้เข้าประเทศค่ะ สุดท้ายเราขอชื่นชมช่างภาพไทยหลายท่านที่มางานนี้มีมารยาทดีมาก เวลาเข้าไปถ่ายรูปแล้วก็รีบออกมาเพื่อเปิดโอกาสให้ช่างภาพท่านอื่นได้เข้าไปเก็บภาพ ตรงนี้ถือว่ามีความเป็นมืออาชีพโดยแท้จริง นอกจากนี้ยังมีสัมมาคารวะและอัธยาศัยดีอีกด้วย

When Do They Light the Candles?
At no time, are the candles ever lit. After the festival, the floats are taken back to the temple where they are displayed for a few months, before they are melted down for the next year. One of may favorite temples in Ubon is Wat Si Pradu (above), which has an Ubosot that is decorated to look like a candle float. Inside are magnificent murals by Mr. Somkiat Sriprohm, whom we met here in my blog last week.
