Thai coins in circulation (Obverse side)
His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej
On the obverse side of every coin is an image of the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej. The reverse side of the coins have images of famous Thai temples, for the most part, except some special coins that were designed to commemorate special events and celebrations. After realizing that we had visited all of the temples on the coins, we decided to compare the artwork on the coins, with the photographs in our THAILAND 180º book, and learn more about the coins.
หยิบเหรียญที่เราใช้กันอยู่ทุกวันออกมาก็น้ำตาปริ่ม … บนเหรียญด้านหน้ามีพระบรมรูปพระบาทสมเด็จพระปรมินทรมหาภูมิพลอดุลยเดช ผินพระพักตร์ทางเบื้องซ้าย ทรงเครื่องบรมขัตติยราชภูษิตาภรณ์ ทรงฉลองพระองค์ครุย เหรียญกษาปณ์ที่เรานำมาถ่ายภาพนี้เป็นเหรียญกษาปณ์แบบหมุนเวียน ซึ่งผ่านการใช้งานแล้วทั้งสิ้น รวมทั้งปี พ.ศ. ที่ผลิตก็ต่างกัน — ด้านหลังของเหรียญจะปรากฏเป็นรูปวัดสำคัญในประเทศไทย ซึ่งเราได้ค้นภาพดูแล้วพบว่า ตอนที่เราเดินทางถ่ายภาพทำหนังสือ THAILAND 180º นั้น เราได้ลงพิมพ์ภาพถ่ายของเราในหนังสือครบทุกวัดที่ปรากฏอยู่บนด้านหลังของเหรียญกษาปณ์ไทยเลยค่ะ และก็นำภาพของเรามาเทียบกับเหรียญต่าง ให้ชมตามนี้
1 Baht coin
1 Baht Coin – เหรียญ ๑ บาท
One Baht coin has a diameter of 20mm and is about the size of an American Penny. It was first minted in 1986 and was made from cupronickel, but the composition was changed to nickel-clad iron, in 2009. Its value is one Thai Baht, which is about .032 American Dollars. The image on the reverse side of King Bhumibol Adulyadej is the image of Wat Phra Sri Rattana Satsadaram or Temple of the Emerald Buddha, was designed by the Treasury Department. The design shows the roof of the temple, and the famous row of stupas on the temple grounds. The real temple and palace look much more spectacular than anyone has ever captured in a photograph.
เหรียญ ๑ บาท เป็นโลหะสีขาว (ทองแดงผสมนิกเกิล) เส้นผ่านศูนย์กลาง ๒๐ มิลลิเมตร ประกาศใช้เมื่อวันที่ ๘ สิงหาคม ๒๕๒๙ ด้านหลังมีรูปพระศรีรัตนเจดีย์ วัดพระศรีรัตนศาสดาราม ในพระบรมมหาราชวัง … ภาพในหนังสือ THAILAND 180º เรามักจะถ่ายภาพโดยไม่ให้มีผู้คนอยู่ในภาพ แต่วัดพระแก้วนี้ไม่เคยมีวันไหนที่จะไม่ผู้ใดมาเยี่ยมชมสักการะเลยสักวัน วันหนึ่งๆ มีผู้เข้าชมเป็นพันเป็นหมื่นคน แม้จะไปแต่เช้าเฝ้ารอประตูเปิด ผู้คนก็ยังเยอะมาก คุณเอ็ดเวิร์ดเลยหามุมจนพบ และได้มุมมองใหม่มาให้ชม ที่นี่คือ “วัดพระแก้ว” ในมุมมองของ THAILAND 180º ที่น่าทึ่งและตะลึงในความอลังการของพระอารามและปราสาทราชวังของประเทศไทย ซึ่งภายในอาณาบริเวณวัดพระแก้วจากภาพนี้ประกอบด้วยปราสาทพระเทพบิดร, พระสุวรรณเจดีย์, พระอุโบสถ, พระอัษฎามหาเจดีย์ (พระปราง ๘ องค์), ยักษ์ทวารบาล, และพระระเบียง
2 Baht coin
2 Baht Coin – เหรียญ ๒ บาท
Two Baht coin is slightly larger than the one Baht coin. Although it was first minted in 2005 and was silver colored and composed of nickel-clad low-carbon steel, the composition was changed to an aluminum-bronze, and the color to gold, in 2008. This was due to the rising costs of the base metals, and to distinguish it more from the one Baht coin, for which it was often confused. Two Thai Baht is presently worth .064 American Dollars. The reverse side was designed by Mr.Chaiyod Soontrapa, and Sculpted by Mr. Thammanun Kaeosawang, features a design of Wat Saket Ratcha Wora Maha Wihan, or Golden Mountain Temple, in Bangkok. This chedi is located in the older, historic part of Bangkok, where it sits atop a small mountain. In addition to its story-book like appearance, after a good climb to the top, it provides a great view of the city. This was one of the first few photographs I made for our project, and I took a more artistic approach than most of the other photographs in the book, to the point where it’s become abstracted. I had intended to replace the photograph with a more conventional view, but Fon, a Bangkok native, encouraged me to go with this more artsy view. Glad we did!
เหรียญ ๒ บาท ประกาศใช้เมื่อวันที่ ๑๕ กันยายน ๒๕๔๘ ด้านหลังมีรูปพระบรมบรรพต วัดสระเกศราชวรมหาวิหาร กรุงเทพมหานคร สร้างเป็นลักษณะภูเขา มีพระเจดีย์อยู่บนยอด ที่เราคนไทยเรียกขานกันว่า เจดีย์ภูเขาทอง มีบันไดเวียนเป็นทางขึ้นไปถึงพระเจดีย์ ซึ่งสามารถเห็นทิวทัศน์ของกรุงเทพมหานคร โดยเฉพาะบริเวณเกาะรัตนโกสินทร์ คุณเอ็ดเวิร์ดได้ถ่ายภาพภูเขาทองมาหลากหลายมุม เดิมทีภาพชุดแรกกะว่าจะลงหนังสือ และเก็บภาพชุดสองไว้ก่อนเพราะออกแนวแอ็บสแทร็กอาร์ต (abstract) แต่ฝนชอบภาพนี้มากและสนับสนุนให้พิมพ์ภาพนี้ในหนังสือ THAILAND 180º เพื่อให้มีความหลากหลายในมิติมุมมองของภาพ
5 Baht coin
5 Baht Coin – เหรียญ ๕ บาท
Five Baht coin is about the size of an American Nickel. It was first minted in 1988, with some minor changes to its thickness and weight, in 2009. This coin is composed of nickel and copper and is worth five Thai Baht, which is about .16 American Dollars. It has the image of Wat Benchamabophit or the Marble Temple on the reverse side, was designed by Paithoonsri Na Chiangmai. The coin is stamped on both sides to give the impression that it is nonagonal, or nine-sided.
Because this coin and this temple are so well known to me, I set off to find a different view than I had seen before. The sun was still low when I arrived at the temple, and the main door was locked. I took a few pictures of the front, in case I couldn’t find anything better, and then headed towards the rear of the temple. The tiles were still cool and damp under my bare feet, and the sun was just starting to show over the roof, lighting a low band of haze, and the sky was pure blue. The back of this temple is very similar to the front, with two large Singhas, (mythological lions), but in the would-be entrance is a standing Buddha image.
เหรียญ ๕ บาท ประกาศใช้เมื่อวันที่ ๑ มิถุนายน ๒๕๓๑ มีจุดพิเศษกว่าเหรียญอื่นตรงที่ขอบเหรียญวงในทั้งด้านหน้าและด้านหลังเป็นรูปเก้าเหลี่ยม ด้านหลังมีรูปพระอุโบสถวัดเบญจมบพิตรดุสิตวนาราม ซึ่งเป็นพระอารามหลวงที่เคารพของชาวไทย และมีชื่อเสียงเป็นรู้จักในกลุ่มนักท่องเที่ยวชาวต่างชาติ คุณเอ็ดเวิร์ดรู้จักวัดนี้ดีพอสมควร และก็ตั้งใจถ่ายรูปในมุมใหม่ๆ แต่ก็อดไม่ได้ที่จะต้องถ่ายภาพด้านหน้าวัดนี้ด้วย เดินถ่ายภาพไปเรื่อยๆ จึงพบว่าด้านหลังก็แทบจะไม่แตกต่างจากด้านหน้าเลย ในขณะเวลานั้นแสงก็ดีและท้องฟ้าสวย จึงได้นำภาพด้านหลังของพระอุโบสถวัดเบญจมบพิตรดุสิตวนารามมาให้ชม เทียบกับด้านหน้าที่ปรากฏบนเหรียญ ๕ บาท
10 Baht coin
10 Baht Coin – เหรียญ ๑๐ บาท
10 Baht coin is a bi-metallic with an outer ring that is made of Cupronickel and a center made of Aluminium Bronze. It was first minted in1988, and the reverse side features a sculpture of the Temple of Dawn or Wat Arun Ratchawararam Ratchwawora Mahavihara, which was designed by Paithoonsri Na Chiangmai. Ten Baht is approximately equal to .32 U.S. Dollars. One more striking feature of this coin is the raised Braille dots at the twelve o’clock position; that corresponds to the number 10.
I remember my first day in Thailand and my first ride down the Chao Phraya River, where I caught my first glimpse of Wat Arun or Temple of the Dawn. There it was on the Thonburi side of the river with its prangs in quincunx design (one spire in each corner and one in the center), shining in pearly iridescence. This temple gets its name from the Hindu god Aruna, whose chariot is often depicted as the rising sun. Wat Arun dates back to the seventeenth century, but its main prang was built early in the nineteenth century. Our photo is from farther away and shows more of the Chao Phraya river, and Wang Derm, the palace of King Taksin.
เหรียญ ๑๐ บาท ประกาศใช้เมื่อวันที่ ๑๓ กันยายน ๒๕๓๑ เป็นเหรียญกษาปณ์โลหะสองสี อีกทั้งยังมีอักษรเบรลล์บอกราคาเหรียญอีกด้วย ด้านหลังมีรูปพระปรางค์วัดอรุณราชวรารามราวรมหาวิหาร อันมีสถาปัตยกรรมที่โดดเด่นเฉพาะตัวแห่งรัตนโกสินทร์ เดิมทีเป็นพระปรางค์ที่สร้างขึ้นเพื่อสักการะพระผู้เป็นเจ้าในศาสนาพราหมณ์ผนวกกับมหาเจดีย์ที่สร้างด้วยศรัทธาในธรรมแห่งพระพุทธศาสนา ทำให้เกิดศิลปกรรมรูปแบบใหม่เป็นพระเจดีย์ทรงปรางค์ ซึ่งภาพของ THAILAND 180º จะดูไกลจากองค์พระปรางค์สักหน่อย แต่ก็ทำให้ได้เห็นภาพแวดล้อมบริเวณวัดอรุณที่ตั้งอยู่ริมแม่น้ำเจ้าพระยาอันเป็นแม่น้ำสายหลักของประเทศไทย
25 Satang coin
25 Satang Coin – เหรียญ ๒๕ สตางค์
The 25 Satang coin is the smallest coin in circulation. This tiny 16mm in diameter copper or brass colored coin was first minted in 1986. It is composed of both iron and copper and is worth 1/4 of the Thai Bath, which is worth around .032 American Dollars. The image of Wat Phra Mahathat Wora Maha Viharn on the reverse is credited to the Treasury Department. I used low angle cross-lighting and a macro lens to bring out the details of the coin.
Our photo in the “THAILAND 180º” book is somewhat similar to the coins design, but it seems the artist took a few liberties in showing the design of this temple, but that’s the advantage of not being restricted by the camera’s eye. This temple is located in Nakhon Si Thammarat and is very famous for a number of reasons that I’ll cover in another blog post. I’ll tease further and say that this image was taken on the same day that the gates of both heaven and hell are open, according to legend, and that along with the clouds and rain, left me with strange feelings that I think show in the photo.
เหรียญที่เล็กที่สุด คือ “เหรียญ ๒๕ สตางค์” ซึ่งปัจจุบันที่ใช้กันอยู่นี้มีทั้งสีทองเหลืองและสีทองแดง โดยด้านหลังมีรูป “พระบรมธาตุเจดีย์ วัดมหาธาตุวรมหาวิหาร จ.นครศรีธรรมราช” — การถ่ายภาพเหรียญนี่ไม่ง่ายเลยนะ เพราะเราใช้เหรียญที่ผ่านการใช้งานจริง มีร่องรอยการใช้งานทุกเหรียญ ต้องหามุมแสงเหมาะ ๆ เพื่อให้เห็นรายละเอียดนูนต่ำกันชัดๆ เพราะผู้ออกแบบเหรียญกษาปณ์ไทยใส่ใจในทุกรายละเอียดจริงๆ — เมื่อนำเหรียญ ๒๕ สตางค์มาเทียบกับภาพในหนังสือของเรานั้นใกล้เคียงมาก แต่ไม่เหมือนซะทีเดียวแน่นอน เพราะเราใช้เลนส์ circular fisheye ถ่ายภาพ … แต่สิ่งหนึ่งที่เราไม่ลืม คือ เรารู้สึกสัมผัสในความศักดิ์สิทธิ์ ความศรัทธา และความขลัง ของพระบรมธาตุเจดีย์ในวันสารทเดือนสิบ วันที่เราถ่ายภาพเจดีย์เหล่านี้ได้เป็นอย่างดี
50 Satang coin
50 Satang Coin – เหรียญ ๕๐ สตางค์
50 Satang coin has a diameter of 18 mm, and can still be found in both the older bronze color, as shown here, and a newer copper color. The Bronze color was first minted in 1986, and the Copper coin was first minted in 2009. The image on the reverse side has an image of Wat Phrathat Doi Suthep which was designed by the Treasury Department.
Wat Phrathat Doi Suthep is located on the top of a mountain, 15 km from the city of Chiang Mai, and is considered to be one of the most sacred sites in the Kingdom. After climbing 306 steps or taking a tram, visitors can make merit here and enjoy a spectacular view of Chiang Mai. There are also statues of various Hindu deities as well as a copy of the Emerald Buddha Image, found in Bangkok.
Our photograph was made from about the same angle as the coin’s design, but I was much closer. With the wide view of my lens, I was able to not only show the well-known stupa but also show the varies temple buildings around it, which I used as design elements to frame the image. Although the design on the coin is beautiful, it doesn’t bring back my memory of being there, as well as the capture with the fisheye lens. This temple is a must-see, and it’s best in the golden light in the late afternoon.
