Hinduism has many Gods, and the Hindus also respect devis, or consort of the Gods as well as their Gods, called Shakti, especially in Bengal and Assam. The most revered Goddess is Parvati, consort of Shiva, who has ten avatars, one of which Kali. For someone like me who grew up in the Western religion system, the mysteries of Hinduism are hard to unravel. Starting with the fact that God is a spirit and combines both feminine and masculine attributes as well as good and evil. For this reason, I will tip-toe around that which I don’t understand, quote verbatim from reliable sources and allow my photos of religious art to do their job. That is, to reveal to the eyes and mind what words can’t. I hope my Hindu friends will forgive any mistakes and correct any misunderstandings I have. Okay, let’s go!

Kali is the fearful and ferocious form of Parvati, the wife of Shiva and often portrayed standing with one foot on him, who lies calm and prostrate beneath her. She is a remover of spells and curses and destroyer of evil. Usually, Kali appears in black body with multi-arms, long red tongue, red lips with blood, and wears skulls necklace. The mural above in Kolkata, is a good example – we were confused that she is the same goddess as Durga but she’s not. You can learn about Durga in our blog HERE.
พระแม่กาลี มีผิวกายสีดำสนิท มี 4-10 พระกร ถืออาวุธและศีรษะอสูร แลบลิ้นยาวถึงทรวงอก ทรงเครื่องประดับเป็นหัวกะโหลก พระนางดูดุร้ายน่าสะพรึงกลัว และส่วนมากถ้าเป็นองค์เต็มจะเห็นพระศิวะนอนอยู่ใต้เบื้องบาทของพระแม่กาลีด้วย … ทำไม?พระศิวะทำอะไรผิด พระแม่ถึงทำท่าทางเหมือนเหยียบพระอุระของพระศิวะ — เพราะฝนอ่านเรื่องราวที่เป็นภาษาไทยแล้วก็มึน บวกกับเรื่องราวที่เป็นภาษาไทยก็ไม่ค่อยละเอียดเท่าไหร่ เลยไปหาอ่านภาษาอังกฤษแล้วก็มาเขียนเล่าคร่าวๆ ว่าเขาเขียนบรรยายถึงเทวีองค์นี้ว่าอย่างไรบ้าง อ่านต่อด้านล่างเลยค่ะ

Kali’s fierce form is strewn with telling symbols. {“Her black complexion symbolizes her all-embracing and transcendental nature. Says the Mahanirvana Tantra: “Just as all colors disappear in black, so all names and forms disappear in her.” Her nudity is primeval, fundamental, and transparent like Nature — the earth, sea, and sky. Kali is free from the illusory covering, for she is beyond all maya or ‘false consciousness.’ Kali’s garland of fifty human heads that stands for the fifty letters of the Sanskrit alphabet symbolizes infinite knowledge.”
“Her girdle of severed human hands signifies work and liberation from the cycle of karma. Her white teeth show her inner purity, and her red lolling tongue indicates her omnivorous nature — “her indiscriminate enjoyment of all the world’s ‘flavors.'” Her sword is the destroyer of false consciousness and the eight bonds that bind us.”}
Because Kali appears naked, sometimes she makes her appearance ugly, so as not to arouse worshippers. In some artwork, the lower half of her body is missing altogether.
ที่ประเทศอินเดีย เรามักจะเห็นภาพเขียนผนังหรือกำแพงต่างๆ ซึ่งมีทั้งภาพโฆษณาและภาพองค์เทพ ส่วนกราฟฟิตี้นั้นมีน้อยจนแทบไม่เห็น ตอนเราไปเมืองกัลกัตตาก็จะพบภาพเขียนรูปพระแม่กาลี, พระแม่ทุรคา, และเทวีองค์อื่นๆ เยอะแยะมากมาย ตอนแรกเราก็คิดว่าพระแม่ทุรคากับพระแม่กาลีเป็นองค์เดียวกัน แต่ไม่ใช่ค่ะ
รูปลักษณ์ของพระแม่กาลีที่กล่าวไว้ในเบื้องต้นนั้นล้วนมีความหมายทั้งสิ้น ตั้งแต่ผิวกายสีดำดังรัตติกาล ธรรมชาติทั้งมวลมาลในสากลโลกล้วนรวมอยู่ในพระองค์ พระนางเป็นเหมือนดั่งภาพมายาที่เหนือมายา, สังวาลย์ศีรษะมนุษย์ทั้ง 50 หัวแทนรูปอักษรสันสกฤต 50 ตัวอักษร อันหมายถึงความรู้ไม่มีที่สิ้นสุด, กายพันธน์ทำจากนิ้วมือมนุษย์มาร้อยเป็นผืนพันบั้นเอวของพระนาง สื่อถึงการปลดปล่อยพันธนาการจากบ่วงกรรม, พระทนต์ขาว แสดงถึงความบริสุทธิ์จากภายใน, พระชิวหาสีแดงสดเพลิดเพลินบันเทิงกับการรับรสสัมผัสทั้งหมดในโลกนี้, ดาบของพระนาง คือเพชฆาตแห่งมายาและพันธนาการทั้งแปดที่ผูกมัดพันรอบเราอยู่ ***คหสต. – พันธนาการ 8 ในศาสนาฮินดูนี้ เมื่อนำมาเทียบเคียงกับพระพุทธศาสนา คือ “สังโยชน์ 10” ในพระอภิธรรมปิฎกนั่นเอง

พระเนตรทั้งสาม แลเห็นอดีต ปัจจุบัน และอนาคต หรือในภาษาสันสกฤตหมายถึง “กาละ” อันมนุษย์และสัตว์โลกทั้งหลายประกอบจากธาตุทั้ง 5 คือ ดิน, น้ำ, ลม, ไฟ, และอากาศ มีสังโยชน์ 10 หรือ กิเลสกรรมร้อยรัดให้อยู่ในวัฏฏะเวียนว่ายตายเกิดเป็นวงจรเรื่อยไป, และสุดท้าย พระศิวะที่ใต้เบื้องบาทของพระนาง ตีความว่า หากขาดพลังแห่งอิสัตรีผู้สนับสนุนอยู่เบื้องหลังพระศิวะแล้วไซร้ พระศิวะหรือบุรุษคงเสื่อมพลังอำนาจเช่นกัน

A Not so Shocking Visit to the Electronic Temple
We boarded the Shatabdi Express train in Delhi and headed towards the holy cities of Haridwar and Rishikesh. Four hours later after traveling in luxury air conditioned comfort, we arrived in Haridwar. It was here that we found the Shri Krishna Pranami Mandir. This temple has many animated displays and dioramas. Many of the more orthodox Hindus, including our guide, think temples like this are really more like tourist traps. I fully understand what he means, but I believe seeing one of the many “electronic” or “robot animated” temples is worth the time.
เรานั่งรถไฟ Shatabdi Express จากเดลี (Delhi) ไปเมืองหริดวาร์ (Haridwar) เมืองศักดิ์สิทธิ์อันเป็นจุดเริ่มต้นของนักแสวงบุญสู่เขาไกรลาส ใช้เวลาแค่ประมาณ 4 ชั่วโมงกว่า นั่งรถไฟไฮโซ แบบชิลๆ แอร์ฉ่ำๆ มีน้ำชา อาหารเช้า เสิร์ฟพร้อมหนังสือพิมพ์ด้วยค่ะ ฝนบอกก่อนว่าเมืองหริดวาร์ และฤษีเกศ (Rishikesh) เป็นเมืองมังสวิรัติ ไม่มีเนื้อสัตว์และแอลกอฮอล์ขายนะคะ ที่บอกก่อนเพราะตอนเราไปไม่มีใครบอกเรา เลยไม่ได้เผื่อใจไว้ว่าต้องทานเวจจี้แบบอินเดีย 10 กว่ามื้อ ปกติทานเวจจี้ได้นะ แต่เจอเวจจี้แบบผักสับบดละเอียด บอกเลยว่ารมณ์เสียที่บริษัทที่เราจ้าง(แพงด้วย)ไม่บอกกล่าวกันล่วงหน้า ก็นั่งกินโรตีไปชมวิวไปแล้วกันค่ะ — พอออกไประหว่างเมืองหริดวาร์ และฤษีเกศ มีวัดฮินดูที่น่าสนใจอยู่หลายวัด วัด Shri Krishna Pranami Mandir หรือบางคนเรียกกันว่า Electronic Temple จะต่างจากวัดอื่นตรงที่ภายในทำเป็นลักษณะคล้ายถ้ำแบ่งเป็นห้องๆ แต่ละห้องจะมีรูปปั้นเทพและเทวี ที่ประดิษฐ์ใส่กลไกอิเล็กทรอนิกส์ให้สามารถเคลื่อนไหวได้ มีรูปปั้นพระแม่กาลีด้วย ปล.มีค่าเข้าชม แต่ก็แค่ไม่กี่บาทหรอกค่ะ

The Origin of Goddess Kali
There are so many versions of how Kali came into being, but the common is that Parvati created the avatar Kali, to kill the demon Daruka. Daruka had received a boon from Shiva that only a female could kill him.
Of course, killing a demon is never as easy as it seems. Kali fought Daruka and his army, but every time she stabbed him, his blood dropped, and more demons spawned from his blood droplets. Eventually, Kali defeated him by sucking the drops of blood before they touched the ground, as per Shiva’s advice.
In celebration of her victory, she danced in uncontrollable jubilation. Shiva began to worry that her foot falls would destroy the entire world, and threw himself under her feet to cushion the impacts. Upon seeing this, Kali realized that she had gone too far and calmed down. This is why Shiva is often portraited laying beneath her feet.
เรื่องราวเกี่ยวกับพระแม่กาลีมีหลากหลายเวอร์ชั่น แต่สรุปคร่าวๆ คือ พระแม่อุมาจึงแบ่งภาคออกมาเป็นพระกาลิกาหรือกาลี เป็นปางดุร้ายและไล่สังหารอสูรทั้งหลาย จนมาถึงคราวของอสุรมาธุ ผู้ได้รับพรจากพระศิวะให้มีชีวิตเป็นอมตะ แม้ถูกฟันแทงจนเลือดตกต้องพื้นดิน ก็จะทำให้เกิดอสูรอีกนับร้อยพัน ทำให้พระศิวะต้องแนะถึงวิธีสังหารอสูรมาธูตนนี้แก่พระแม่กาลี ว่า ให้พระนางดื่มกินเลือดของอสูรมาธูจนกระทั่งไม่มีเลือดตกต้องพื้นพสุธา พระแม่กาลีจึงสามารถปราบอสุรมาธูได้สำเร็จ และด้วยความปิติยินดียิ่งนัก พระนางจึงกระโดดโลดเต้น แต่ด้วยพลานุภาพของพระนางจึงทำให้กระเทือนไปถึงสามโลก จนพระศิวะต้องทอดร่างของพระองค์เข้ามารองบาทไว้ก่อนที่พระแม่กาลีจะกระทืบบาทบาทาลงโลกมนุษย์ จึงเป็นที่มาของมูรติหรือรูปเคารพดังที่เราเห็น

Goddess Kali Spotting in Southern India
This tall Kali statue caught my eyes from far away when we were on the road in Tamil Nadu. After I had told the driver to pull over, I walked through the mud and across the rail tracks to take this photo, she’s taller than I thought but very colorful. I had trouble showing it with a fisheye lens and opted instead to place her in the background of this photo of a Hanuman statue. It seems that they love vibrant color in the South of India and the ride through the south was full of this imagery at every turn. As we passed by each piece of amazing art, the driver would look at me in the rearview mirror to check my level of interest. After many stops, we realized that we would need to make this journey again someday and allow more travel time.
องค์นี้เป็นพระแม่กาลีเช่นกัน สีสันสะดุดตาเรามาแต่ไกลขณะที่เดินทางในรัฐทมิฬนาฑู จนคุณเอ็ดต้องบอกให้คนขับรถแวะจอดข้างทาง แล้วเดินข้ามทางลูกรังที่เป็นดินโคลนและก็ต้องข้ามเนินทางรถไฟไปอีกพอสมควร จะสังเกตได้ว่าศิลปะทางตอนใต้ของประเทศอินเดียมักจะมีสีสันฉูดฉาด ทำให้เราตื่นเต้นและตื่นตาตลอดทาง เจออะไรที่ไหนแวะจอดหมด

A Visit to the Meenakshi Amman Temple
When we reached the famous Hindu temple, Meenakshi Amman, we found this Kali statue situated near the temple complex called Pudhu Mandapam, one of the oldest arcades for apparel. Notice the carved sandstone pillars which give you an idea of the magnificence of South Indian temple architecture. Around this nicely aged idol was the click-clack sound of several sewing machines, the sounds of customers at a crowded bazaar, and the roar of the traffic just outside the walls. I hope someday you have the chance to travel through India! We’re pause here for a rest today, but you can look forward to a full report on the Meenakshi Amman Temple soon.

The result is the book, THAILAND 180º. Later, they traveled extensively through Myanmar, Malaysia, and India, gathering a massive collection of 180º photos. They currently live in Chiang Mai where they continue to blog and are now working on a CHIANG MAI 180º book.
