The Tazaungdaing Festival, Myanmar ~ “ยี่เป็ง” ที่ไม่เคยธรรมดาในเมืองตองยี เมียนมาร์!!
Loi Krathong, Yi Peng, and the Festival of Lights in Southeast Asia are all adopted from India. As Brahmin & Hinduism expanded to the east, Myanmar, Thailand, and Laos took this a part of Aarti Puja ritual tradition and adapted it to their culture and Buddhism.
The Yi Peng celebrations in Lanna is similar to the Tazaungdaing festival in Shan state, Myanmar, which is held on the full moon day of Tazaungmon, the eighth month of the Burmese calendar. Also, the purposes are for paying respect to the Sulamani Cetiya in a heaven in Buddhist cosmology and home of the angels, or as a welcome the Buddha back to earth from his visiting mother in heaven, or as a way to drive away evil spirits and bad luck. Both festivals also made the hot air lantern from rice paper to launch to the sky. During this festival, balloons are sent to the heavens, or at least as high and far as far as they can go. Prizes are awarded to the teams whose balloon travels the highest and the farthest as well as for good teamwork and the beauty of the balloon. Even the time it takes to launch a balloon is carefully monitored by a watchful judge or two.

Yi Peng – ยี่เป็ง
The Yi Peng celebration is held on the full moon day of Tazaungmon, the eighth month of the Burmese calendar. ยี่เป็ง ในล้านนาและเมียนมาร์ นอกจากจะมีวัตถุประสงค์ที่คล้ายกัน คือ เพื่อเป็นพุทธบูชารับเสด็จพระพุทธเจ้าในวันกลับจากเทวโลกเมื่อครั้งเสด็จโปรดพระพุทธมารดา, เพื่อบูชาพระเกศแก้วจุฬามณีบนสวรรค์ชั้นดาวดึงส์, บูชาพระอุปคุตเถระ, และเพื่อลอยเคราะห์ลอยทุกข์โศกโรคภัยแล้ว ยังมีความคล้ายคลึงกันตรง “การลอยโคมยี่เป็ง”
Tazaungdaing Festival – “ยี่เป็ง” รัฐฉาน
The Shan state borders Thailand and most of the population of Tai Yai ethnicity. Its capital city is Taunggyi, which is known as the friendliest town in Myanmar. Traveling to Taunggyi is somewhat difficult since in a valley, and there’s no public transportation. It’s best to book a package tour with a tour guide and driver. We began our journey by taking a flight from Yangon to the Heho airport. As we approached our destination, the scenery outside the plane’s window became farmlands in many colors, reminiscent of a Van Gogh painting. Once on the ground, a tour guide and a driver came to pick us up and soon we were speeding along a curvy, zig-zagging road. Fon was starting to turn green, and my stomach wasn’t enjoying the mountainous road either. I rarely get carsick, but I was almost ready to stop for a, er, rest, when the guide announced that we had arrived at the fairgrounds. … Here we go!!!
รัฐฉาน มีชายแดนติดกับประเทศไทย ประชากรส่วนใหญ่เป็นชาวไทใหญ่ มีเมืองตองยีเป็นเมืองหลวง และที่นี่ขึ้นชื่อในเรื่องความเป็นมิตรกับนักท่องเที่ยวมากถึงมากที่สุด แต่การเดินทางมาเมืองตองยีไม่ง่ายเท่าไหร่ค่ะ เพราะต้องนั่งเครื่องบินไปลงที่สนามบิน Heho (((แต่บอกเลยว่า วิวสวยมากกกกกกกกกก สวยเหมือนมีจิตรกรมาวาดมาแต้มสีไว้ ประมาณแวนโก๊ะเลยนะขอบอก))) จากนั้นไกด์และคนขับรถจะมารับที่สนามบิน นั่งรถเลาะเขา-โค้งซ้าย-เวียนขวา-วนไปค่ะ ง่ายมั้ย ไม่ง่ายจ้ะ เพราะรัฐฉานอยู่บนเขาสูง ข้ามเขาไปอีกหลายลูกบนถนนแบบซิกแซก คลื่นเหียนเวียนศีรษะกันไปประมาณชั่วโมงนึง … ถึงแล้ว ลุย!!!

The Tai Yais really know how to celebrate! There was a Ferris wheel and several other rides, but after the car ride, we’d just been on, my stomach and neck screamed a resounding NO! Next, we passed throw row upon row of delicious looking street food, some of which you can read about on this blog, HERE.
We were looking forward to the main daytime event of launching large animal-shaped hot air balloons into the sky. This is done with great pride and pageantry, as one team after another arrives with a small band and a balloon in a pick-up truck. The balloons take months to design and can be expensive to build.
ใช่ค่ะ…!! กลางวันแสกๆ เขาก็จัดเต็ม มีการประกวดแข่งขันแล้วทีมเข้าแข่งขันก็เยอะมาก จัดกันยาว 7 วัน 7 คืน — เป็นงานแฟร์ที่ใหญ่มาก มีทั้งดนตรี, คอนเสิร์ต, ชิงช้าสวรรค์, เครื่องเล่นต่างๆ, ร้านค้า, ร้านอาหารมากมายรวมถึงอาหารแบบสตรีทฟู้ดของเมียนมาร์หอมหวนชวนให้อยากชิม
งานลอยโคมยี่เป็งหรือบอลลูนของเมืองตองยี มีทั้งกลางวันและกลางคืน แล้วแบบกลางวันกับกลางคืนนี้ก็เป็นบอลลูนคนละแบบด้วยนะ แต่บล็อกนี้เอาภาพมาเล่าถึงบอลลูนตอนกลางวันกันก่อนค่ะ

Excitement builds as a folded balloon is removed from the truck and unfolded as the band plays. The group then holds the balloon, while a teammate holds a torch under the small opening of the balloon to fill it with hot air, then places a lighted fuel cell under it. Like many, the squirrel balloon on the above burst into flames and fell to the earth, seconds after release.
แต่ละทีมมากันเป็นคันรถ ทั้งทีมงานปล่อยบอลลูนและทีมดนตรี บอลลูนแต่ละลูกมันใหญ่และบอบบางมาก เพราะทำจากกระดาษว่าวเหมือนโคมลอยงานยี่เป็งและโคมควัน (ว่าวฮม) บ้านเรา แต่แถวบ้านเราจะเห็นว่ามีเพียงทรงกระบอกและทรงลูกบาศก์ ส่วน “ยี่เป็งตองยี” อะเมสซิ่งมาก!! มาเป็นรูปสัตว์ต่างๆ ใช้กระดาษว่าวเป็นร้อยๆ แผ่นมาตัดต่อกัน โดยไม่มีโครงไม้ใดๆทั้งสิ้น ใช้เวลาประดิษฐ์และทดสอบกันหลายเดือน พอมาถึงลานแข่งขัน ก็จะค่อยๆ กางโคมที่พับไว้ออก แล้วจุดคบไฟเพื่อให้ความร้อนเข้าไปข้างในให้เต็มที่ก่อนจะปล่อยขึ้นสู่ท้องฟ้า … แต่ก็มีหลายอันที่ล่วงบ้าง ไฟไหม้ก่อนปล่อยบ้าง ทีมงานต้องคอยระวังเพราะที่ตองยีลมแรงมากๆ (ดูคลิปที่ฝนถ่ายมาลงยูทูปด้านล่างของบล็อกนี้นะคะ)

Some teams made a group of lanterns such as a group of doves or elephants, while others made two different kinds of animals to be launched at the same time. The animal balloons floating in the sky reminded me of the famous album cover for “Animals” by Pink Floyd. I was admittedly a little disappointed that there were no pig balloons.

A few teams receive sponsorship and can create huge animals like the Hintha bird above, which is a mythical Burmese animal that symbolizes wealth and good luck.
ในขณะที่บางทีมมีสปอนเซอร์รายใหญ่ ก็จัดมาแบบตัวใหญ่มากกก.. อย่างเช่น นกในตำนานของพม่าที่เรียกว่า Hintha อันเป็นสัญลักษณ์แห่งความเจริญรุ่งเรืองและโชคดี

A giant purple rhinoceros hornbill balloon was sponsored by a famous Shan business tycoon, who you can see near the left edge of the photo above.

Here’s the best one! A huge peacock that has a lot of detail decorations on its tail with good balance, you’ll see the whole peacock in Fon’s clip at the end of this blog.

The result is the book, THAILAND 180º. Later, they traveled extensively through Myanmar, Malaysia, and India, gathering a massive collection of 180º photos. They currently live in Bangkok.
