The Fire Balloons of Tazaungdaing Festival in Myanmar ~ “ยี่เป็ง-บอลลูนไฟ” ยิ่งใหญ่ อลังการ แห่งรัฐฉาน เมียนมาร์!!
The Taunggyi Fire Balloon Festival is an annual festival that draws huge crowds of local and foreign visitors. In the last blog, we showed you the day-time balloons in various animal shapes; today’s blog is all about the night-time balloons.
งานเทศกาลลอยโคม “ยี่เป็ง” ของเมืองตองยี รัฐฉาน ซึ่งเราเขียนถึงในบล็อกที่แล้วว่าไม่ธรรมดา เพราะทำเป็นรูปสัตว์นานาชนิดหลากสีสันเพื่อลอยในตอนกลางวัน และสำหรับบล็อกนี้เราจะนำภาพของแบบที่ลอยตอนกลางคืนที่เป็นคนละแบบกันโดยสิ้นเชิง ซึ่งโคมกลางคืนนี้ขอเรียกว่า “บอลลูนไฟ” แล้วกันค่ะ เพราะทุ่มทุนสร้างมหาศาล เป็นรุ่นยักษ์ใหญ่บิ๊กบึ้มอภิมหาอลังการแบบบอลลูนจริงๆ!! — อะไร? ยังไง?… อ่านต่อกันเลยค่ะ

The Fire Balloons At Night – เทศกาลบอลลูนไฟ เมืองตองยี
The fire balloon competition at night features 2 categories: Sein Nar Pan (Diamond Earring) balloons that are decorated with tealight candles and Nya Mee Kyi (Night Fireworks) balloons which are laden with firecrackers, bottle rockets, Roman candles, shower sparklers. Both payloads are very heavy necessitating large balloons and well-practiced teams.
บอลลูน หรือ ยี่เป็งเมืองตองยี ภาคตอนกลางคืนนี้ มี 2 แบบ คือ แบบประดับและจุดเทียนสวยๆ ร้อยเป็นระย้าลอยไปพร้อมกับบอลลูนไฟ และอีกแบบนึงเป็นแบบจุดพลุกันบึ้มบั้มเปรี้ยงปร้างอย่างกับสมรภูมิรบยังไงยังงั้น เวลาจุดปล่อยบอลลูนไฟขึ้นทีนึงต้องใช้ทีมงานเป็นร้อยชีวิต

Remember, these balloons aim to pay respect to the great Sulamani Chedi in heaven, so it needs to travel as high and as far as it can go. Note the full moon in the photographs lighting the way.
!! แน่นอนค่ะ บอลลูนต้องใหญ่มหึมา !! เพราะมีน้ำหนักของเทียน หรือ พลุเข้ามาถ่วงบอลลูน แต่ในเมื่อมีวัตถุประสงค์ เพื่อเป็นพุทธบูชาสักการะพระเกศแก้วจุฬามณีบนสวรรค์ชั้นดาวดึงส์ ดังนั้นต้องทำให้บอลลูนนี้สามารถลอยไปให้สูงและไกลมากที่สุดเท่าที่จะทำได้ พระจันทร์เด่นเป็นใจ คอยนำทางให้ในคืนนี้ค่ะ
The Sein Nar Pan Fire Balloons – บอลลูนไฟแบบประดับโคมเทียน

These balloons are called “Sein Nar Pan” or “Diamond Earrings,” so named because of the small candles that hang from the balloon. All of these candles are handmade from light materials. Some balloons carry hundreds of these small candles that must be lighted all at once, while the balloon is being filled with hot air from torches. The balloons are constructed of “Shan paper.” The composition of this tissue-like paper is somewhat of a secret, but it’s believed to be a combination of mulberry fiber and rice flour. When the balloon is fully inflated, a burning fuel pot is attached to make it fly. Slowly the balloon heads skyward and the pattern of the tealights is revealed, in this case, Burmese words. Did I mention that judges are timing this whole process and evaluating the teamwork? You’ll notice in the movie how calm and collected the teammates are. Just being close to them made me nervous. As usual, the fisheye lens forced me to be closer than I, or probably they, wanted. A few times I felt like grabbing a cigarette lighter and lending a hand.
แบบประดับโคมเทียน เรียกว่า “Sein Nar Pan” หรือ “ต่างหูเพชร” เป็นการร้อยโคมเทียนเป็นแพ ดูคล้ายต่างหูทรงระย้า นำไปติดกับตัวบอลลูนไฟขนาดใหญ่ ซึ่งใช้พื้นที่กว้างและทีมงานเป็นร้อยคน ทั้งช่วยกันจุดเทียนในโคมที่ทำจากกระดาษแก้วหลากสีและจุดไฟให้ความร้อนแก่บอลลูนในเวลาเดียวกัน โดยมีคณะกรรมการคอยจับเวลาอยู่ เมื่อพร้อมแล้วก็จะค่อยๆ ปล่อยบอลลูนไฟขึ้นไป จนแพโคมเทียนค่อยๆ เผยออกมาเป็นรูปต่างๆ เช่น ตัวอักษรสื่อข้อความดังภาพด้านบน

The next Sein Nar Pan fire balloon featured a tealight arrangement in the shape of a Burmese harp (saung kauk). This ancient musical instrument dates back to the 8th century it was played exclusively for chamber music within the royal court. It is still used today, and there are some movies on YouTube if you’re curious what they sound like.

The Nya Mee Kyi Fire Balloons – บอลลูนไฟแบบติดพลุ

Just thinking about these balloons triggers a small amount of PTSD in me, but I’ll get to that in a bit! Each of these balloons costs around $1,800 – $3,800 in materials alone!!… The prizes for best launch and display are high also but so is the danger factor. Because the weight of each Nya Mee Kyi fire balloon is more than 100kgs and its payload contains 66kgs of gunpowder, the rules are very strict governing the size, weight, and amount of gunpowder to manage risks.
Each Nya Mee Kyi fire balloon has a 75-foot circumference and is 23-24 feet tall. It is constructed of around 1,200 pieces of Shan paper and takes two or three months to build.
อย่างที่เกริ่นไว้แต่แรกว่า เขาทุ่มทุนสร้างมหาศาล เราไปสืบทราบมาว่า ต้นทุนบอลลูนไฟแบบติดพลุดินระเบิดนี้มีมูลค่าหลักแสนต่อลูก ส่วนรางวัลชนะเลิศได้รับรางวัลเป็นเงินสดไม่น้อยกว่าสองแสนนะคะ แต่บอลลูนไฟแบบติดพลุนี้มีความเสี่ยงสูงและอันตรายมาก เพราะประกอบด้วยดินระเบิดจำนวนไม่น้อย จึงมีกฎกติกาและคณะกรรมการดูแลอย่างเข้มงวด เมื่อประกอบบอลลูนและพลุแล้วทำให้มีน้ำหนักกว่า 100 กิโลกรัมเลยล่ะค่ะ (เฉพาะดินระเบิดอย่างเดียวก็หนัก 66 กิโลกรัมแล้ว) บอลลูนไฟแบบติดพลุนี้ใช้เวลาทำนานร่วม 3 เดือน ทำกันแบบทั้งวันทั้งคืน ทั้งวาด, เพ้นท์, ตัด, แปะ, ร้อยเชือก,… แฮนด์เมดล้วนๆ
ขนาดวัดรอบตัวบอลลูน ประมาณ 22 เมตร สูงประมาณ 7 เมตร ซึ่งต้องใช้กระดาษว่าวมากถึง 1,200 แผ่น และกระดาษนี้ก็จะต้องใช้กระดาษแฮนด์เมดซึ่งเป็นสูตรเฉพาะที่ทำในรัฐฉานเท่านั้น

Fon had requested permission to go behind-the-scenes, and sneak a peak at a couple of teams who were putting the finishing touches on their Nya Mee Kyi fire balloons for the evening launch. Members of each team held a meeting at a secret location and out jackets with the name of their sponsor on it, along with a sticker to identify them as participants in the event. A final blessing was given while musicians played Shan percussion instruments outside to cheer them on. Hmmm, that man wearing a hat in the photo above looks like me! I got caught-up in the moment and played a bamboo clapper, which I later bought from them as a souvenir. Thanks again, guys! Before we left, one of the team members gave me a sticker that would allow me to be ON THE FIELD at the launch and said: “See you there!” Sweet, now I could get as close as I wanted to photograph the action.

OMG! Houston, we have a Problem!
We saw the front row ground seat area that our Shan liaison had reserved for us, but we still were not satisfied because the fisheye lens, which is my boss, always dictates that I need to be as close as possible. She warned us that it was very dangerous to go on the field in the launching area and told us that we had to stay in the audience zone. I remembered that I was still wearing the sticker that the team had given me, so we told her to keep the seats for us, and that we’d be right back after we got the photos.
We went to greet the team we’d met earlier and talked a little bit until the judge came to give the signal to start. The balloon was heated, and the crowds moved back, the firetrucks were readied. I moved forward! Soon, I started to get the feeling that something was going wrong by the excited voices. The balloon was having trouble taking to the air, and the fuse connected to the rack of fireworks had already been ignited. Suddenly rockets were flying in all directions. I dodged a few, then turned and ran after making the photograph above. I saw one of the small rockets hit Fon’s shoulder and a large one hit my back as we retreated. Then came showers of sparks and thick smoke as the balloon finally lifted-off and moved overhead. Some people were rolling on the ground to put out the fire that had engulfed them and medics were helping them. I lost track of Fon, and after searching in panic for a few anxious minutes, I returned to the spectator area, as we had planned to do if separated. There was Fon and our guide, the guide asked me if I had gotten the photos I wanted. I thought she was being sarcastic, but her face looked innocent, so I just nodded and muttered, “Of Course!” As I reviewed the images in the camera, showers of sparks and a few rockets whizzed by us from the next launch. I could see that I had excellent photos already and decided that it was time for us to go home, instead of tempting the fickle finger of fate any further.
Here’s our second video, Fon’s account of this, er, incident. 😉 Go get some more beer and popcorn. Do not yell “FIRE!” at anytime during the movie, even though everyone else is.
ฮัลโหลๆ มาตามนัด — ได้ที่ชมแบบแถวหน้าสุด แต่เรายังไม่พอใจ ไกด์บอกเราว่ามันอันตราย เขาจะให้ผู้ชมนั่งใกล้สุดก็คือตรงนี้ แต่ตรงนี้ก็ยังอันตรายเหมือนกันนะ เพราะอยู่ในรัศมีที่พลุพุ่งมาถึงหรือตกมาใส่ ส่วนเราก็บอกไกด์ว่า “งั้นไม่เป็นไร เธอนั่งรอตรงนี้ เราจะไปร่วมกับทีมบอลลูน แล้วเดี๋ยวกลับมา เธอห้ามไปไหนนะ” … จบปิ๊ง คุณเอ็ดเวิร์ดกับฝนก็หายไปในฝูงชนทันที
โอ้ว ขุ่นพระ! บอลลูนใหญ่มากกกกก… แบบคนสองสามคนลอยไปกับบอลลูนได้เลย ทักทายคุยกันแป๊บเดียว กรรมการเดินมาให้สัญญาณถึงคิวแล้ว พอจุดไฟให้ความร้อนบอลลูนได้ที่ ก็เริ่มส่งเสียงให้สัญญาณเตรียมจุดพลุ และ ณ บัดนาว ผู้คนเริ่มถอยออกห่าง รถดับเพลิงเตรียมพร้อม คุณเอ็ดเวิร์ดคะ!! เขาให้ถอย คุณดันเดินเข้าไปใกล้ ((circular fisheye ต้องจ่อเลนส์เข้าไปถ่ายซับเจคให้ใกล้ที่สุด)) ทีมคนจุดพลุเริ่มจุด ควันดินระเบิดเริ่มมา บอลลูนยังไม่ทันลอยแต่พลุเริ่มพุ่งประกายออกมา พร้อมกับฝูงชนเริ่มวิ่งกระเจิง — ตัวใครตัวมันละค่ะงานนี้ พลุโดนไหล่ซ้ายฝนไปหน่อยนึง ส่วนคุณเอ็ดเวิร์ดเธอยังยืนถ่ายภาพด้านบนมาให้เราชมกันค่ะ ขุ่นพระ! พอคุณเอ็ดเวิร์ดเริ่มวิ่งก็โดนเข้ากลางหลังทีนึง บางคนโดนขาโดนแขน บางคนก็หมอบกลิ้งลงกับพื้น แต่ฝนก็ยังวิ่งต่อจนหลงกับคุณเอ็ดเวิร์ด ดีนะ! ที่เราสองคนนัดกันไว้แล้วว่า ถ้าหากันไม่เจอก็ให้ไปพบกันตรงที่ไกด์นั่งรออยู่ ฝนเดินกลับไปตรงที่จุดเริ่มต้นก็ไม่เห็น เลยเดินไปหาไกด์แล้วคุณเอ็ดเวิร์ดก็เดินมาเช่นกัน ^^ ตื่นเต้นดีค่ะ แต่ตอนนี้ขอนั่งดูตรงนี้ดีกว่า … พอบอลลูนอีกลูกหนึ่งปล่อยไป ปรากฏว่าพลุล่วงมาใส่จนต้องเอาเสื่อที่รองนั่งมาบังกัน ดูไปสักพักแล้วหันไปบอกไกด์ว่าเราถอยดีกว่า กลับๆๆ … ดูคลิปที่ฝนถ่ายทำไว้ด้านล่างนี้นะคะว่าน่าตื่นเต้นขนาดไหน!

The result is the book, THAILAND 180º. Later, they traveled extensively through Myanmar, Malaysia, and India, gathering a massive collection of 180º photos. They currently live in Chiang Mai where they continue to blog and are now working on a CHIANG MAI 180º book.
