Hpaung Daw Oo Pagoda
Our first trip to Myanmar lasted less than a week, but we were hooked and ended up staying nearly a month to work on our MYANMAR 180º book, on our next trip. People often describe the country, as “Thailand 50 years ago”. Well, I guess that’s true, but the country has some real gems of its own too! One of these is in the Shan Sate and is called Inle Lake. This to me is a “Must See” location. Even if you aren’t interested in local culture, the scenery will blow you away. You can see some of our other post about Inle Lake here, and here. Today we’ll focus on Hpaung Daw Oo Pagoda Festival.
As you approach the Hpaung Daw Oo Pagoda, you’ll notice that the roof is comprised of many different levels with windows in each section. This design helps keep the inside cool and is typical of Shan architecture. Surrounding the pagoda are many vendors selling traditional Burmese and Shan, food, and crafts. Leave your shoes on the boat and let’s go!
อากาศบริสุทธิ์เย็นสบาย ณ ทะเลสาบอินเล ท่ามกลางหุบเขาสูงในตองยี เมืองหลวงของรัฐฉาน เป็นรัฐที่มีความหลากหลายในกลุ่มชนเผ่า ทั้งไทใหญ่ พม่า ว้า กะเหรี่ยง อินทา ฯลฯ ซึ่งส่วนมากเป็นชาวไทยใหญ่ ทะเลสาบอินเล มีชาวอินทา (Intha) ที่อาศัยอยู่มานานนับร้อยปีแล้ว โดยใช้ชีวิตอยู่ท่ามกลางการทำเกษตรบนเกาะวัชพืชที่พวกเขาสร้างขึ้นมาเองในทะเลสาบ และการทำประมงอันมีเอกลักษณ์ไม่เหมือนใครในการพายเรือด้วยเท้า เก็บวัชพืชจากในทะเลสาบเพื่อมาทำปุ๋ยบนเกาะวัชพืชนั้นเอง เรียกว่าเป็น “แปลงผักลอยน้ำ” เลยก็ว่าได้ ผักสดๆ อย่างมะเขือเทศ มะเขือเปาะ และพริก จากสวนผักลอยน้ำนี้ถูกส่งไปขายทั้งในตลาดท้องถิ่นและทั่วประเทศเมียนมาร์ เป็นผักปลอดสาร-สด-ใหม่ รสหวาน กรอบ อร่อย อาหารที่ทะเลสาบอินเลนี้รสชาติดีมากด้วย
ชาวอินทา ชาวพม่า และกลุ่มชนเผ่าต่างๆ อาศัยอยู่ด้วยกันอย่างสงบสุข ยึดมั่นศรัทธาในพระพุทธศาสนาอย่างมาก และที่ทะเลสาบอินเลนี้มี “พระบัวเข็ม” หรือ “พระอุปคุต” ซึ่งเป็นหนึ่งในห้าสิ่งศักดิ์สิทธิ์ของชาวพม่าที่นิยมเดินทางไปสักการะ อันประดิษฐานอยู่ที่ “วัดผ่องด่ออู” วัดที่เป็นศูนย์รวมจิตใจของชาวทะเลสาบอินเล … ที่นี่เดินทางไปมาด้วยเรือ น้ำใสราบเรียบราวกระจก นั่งชมวิวจนเพลิน ก็ถึงวัดแล้ว ถอดรองเท้าไว้ในเรือแล้วตามเรามาเลย!

Once inside, if look up at the ceiling, you’ll see the mirror tiles reflecting the light from the windows on each level. In the center of the pagoda, towards the front, is a raised area that contains some of the most revered Buddha images in all of Myanmar. (No, it’s not a great photo, but I wanted you to see the design.) 😉
วัดในรัฐฉาน มีหลังคาเป็นสถาปัตยกรรมแบบไทใหญ่ ทรงนี้เราคุ้นตากันดี โดยเฉพาะในแถบภาคเหนือของประเทศไทย ตรงบริเวณรอบๆ วัดจะมีร้านจำหน่ายเครื่องสักการะ ถัดออกไปจากบริเวณนั้นหน่อยก็จะมีร้านอาหารและร้านขายสินค้าที่ระลึก เมื่อเดินเข้าไปภายในวิหารจะรู้สึกโปร่งด้วยหลังคาทรงสูงมีลมผ่านตลอด และตรงใจกลางเป็นที่ประดิษฐานองค์พระบัวเข็ม หรือพระอุปคุต
Five Buddha Images, in the Hpaung Daw Oo Pagoda
The image above shows men affixing gold leaves to these Buddha Images, as women are not allowed to touch the relics. Where are the Buddha images? Well, over the years since the 12th Century when King Alaungsithu of Bagan, had the pagoda built on this site, the gold has accumulated on these images. Today they are said to be extremely heavy and have a beauty all their own. Originally these images of five Buddhas were carved by Burmese artists, out of Bodhi tree wood imported from India, and were enshrined here by the King.
ด้วยแรงศรัทธาในองค์พระอุปคุต จึงมีผู้มาปิดทองอยู่ไม่ขาดสาย ยิ่งนานวัน ทองยิ่งหนาขึ้น จนไม่เห็นองค์หรือเค้าโครงเดิมเลย (ภาพด้านบน) พระบัวเข็มหรือพระอุปคุต เซึ่งแกะขึ้นจากกิ่งต้นพระศรีมหาโพธิ์จากประเทศอินเดีย เป็นรูปพระเถระนั่งก้มหน้ามีใบบัวคลุมศีรษะ และมีเข็มหมุดปักอยู่ตามตัวหลายแห่ง นั่งอยู่บนฐานบัวหงาย-บัวคว่ำ เมื่อหงายใต้ฐานดูจะพบลายลักษณ์ปั้นทรงนูนต่ำรูปดอกบัวใบบัวและรูปปลา ทำลงรักปิดทอง ตามตำนานพระอุปคุตเล่าว่าท่านจำศีลอยู่กลางทะเล
Karaweik Barge
Before 1965, the festival began with the five images being loaded on a large karaweik barge, which was made to look like the mythological hintha bird. For the next 17 days, the boat was pulled by other boats with a large crew of leg rowers, in a clockwise direction around the lake. The boat stoped at each main village around the 22-mile long lake, and the Buddha images are taken into the local monastery for the devotees to pay homage to, each day. The highlight of the festival is when the barge reaches the main town of Nyaung Shwe, where great numbers of pilgrims turn out to see the Buddha images. Finally, the boat returned to the Hpaung Daw Oo Pagoda, and the festival ended.
ทุกๆ ปีจะมีการอัญเชิญพระบัวเข็มลงเรือการเวก ที่ทำเป็นรูปนกในตำนานของชาวพม่า แล้วแห่ไปรอบทะเลสาบ โดยมีเรือร่วมในริ้วขบวนที่สวยงามนับร้อยลำ รวมถึงการพายเรือด้วยเท้าล่องไปตามชุมชนรอบทะเลสาบอินเล ทุกวัดในหมู่บ้านที่ขบวนเรือไปจอดพัก ชาวบ้านจะจัดมหรสพสมโภชและเตรียมจัดสำรับภัตตาหารมาถวาย สักการะ กราบไหว้ และวนกลับมาที่วัดผ่องด่ออู ใช้เวลาทั้งสิ้น ๑๘ วัน โดยปฏิบัติในช่วงก่อนออกพรรษา เชื่อว่าจะช่วยคุ้มครองป้องภัยและบันดาลความสมบูรณ์
A Zayat with the Hintha Design
In 1965, Inle lake was very rough, and the Karaweik barge suddenly sank, and all five Buddha images on the boat sank too and were feared lost. A great search ensued, but in the end, only four of the Buddha images were recovered. Brokenhearted, the pilgrims carried the four surviving images back to the pagoda, where to their shock, they found the fifth image was safe in its original spot! Some say the image was a bit damp but otherwise intact. The image above shows a Zayat with the same Hintha design as the Karaweik. These are used as resting areas for travelers and provides shelter for monks during traditional Buddhist festivals. The barge is kept behind the temple in a giant cage, where it awaits its once-a-year journey, making it impossible to make a nice photograph. Now it’s time to say good-bye to Inle Lake.

ปัจจุบันจะอัญเชิญพระบัวเข็ม ๔ องค์ ไปรอบทะเลสาบโดยเหลืออีกองค์ไว้ที่วัด เพราะเชื่อว่าหากอัญเชิญมาครบทั้ง ๕ จะเกิดอาเพศ อย่างเช่นเหตุการณ์เรือพลิกคว่ำเมื่อปี พ.ศ. ๒๕๐๘ ในระหว่างการแห่องค์พระนั้น เกิดขบวนเรือล่ม พระทั้ง ๕ องค์จมลงสู่ทะเลสาบ ชาวบ้านร่วมกันหาองค์พระ พบเพียง ๔ องค์เท่านั้น … แต่ปาฏิหารย์ก็เกิดขึ้นเมื่อชาวบ้านกลับไปที่วัดพบว่า องค์พระองค์ที่ ๕ นั้นได้ประดิษฐาน์อยู่ในวัดเรียบร้อยแล้ว พร้อมทั้งตัวองค์พระยังคงเปียกน้ำ นับจากนั้นชาวบ้านก็ไม่นำองค์พระองค์นี้ขึ้นขบวนแห่อีกเลย
ทะเลสาบอินเล นอกจากจะเป็นแหล่งผลิตมะเขือเทศที่ใหญ่ที่สุดในเมียนม่าร์, แปลงผักลอยน้ำ, หมู่บ้านชาวอินทา, ยังมีวัดวาอารามและตลาดขายสินค้าชาวเขาชนเผ่าต่างๆ ไว้ฝนจะเขียนต่อในบล็อกถัดไป รอติดตามนะคะ
