คือ แค่อยากชวนให้ท่านทั้งหลายพึงระวังในการใช้ชีวิตต่างหากค่ะ

ยัง กัมมัง กะริสสามิ – เราทำกรรมใดไว้

Statue of Phra Maliyadeva at Wat Phai Rong Wua in Suphan Buri- วัดไผ่โรงวัว สุพรรณบุรี
Our tour of hell begins at Wat Phai Rong Wua in the town of Suphanburi, where there are many groups of statues each made of rebar, brick, and concrete, some larger than life-size that explain various kinds of hell. Buddhism in some countries like Myanmar, Cambodia, Laos, and Thailand believe in Karma that leads them to hell or heaven after death. This follows the legend or scriptures from Phra Maliyadeva who was a monk. He is believed to have lived in Sri Lanka during the 2nd century BCE and to have attained nirvana. According to the Mahavamsa, part of the Theravādin tradition, Phra Maliyadeva was the last well-known arhat who had great psychic powers in Sri Lanka. This story recalls Phra Maliyadeva’s teachings to Buddhists, to do the good deeds while they are a human by describing the heaven and hell. It also foretells the coming of Maitreya Bodhisattva, the future Buddha, that we’ll cover in a future blog. The photo above shows the image of Maliyadeva when he visited the hell and passed the message back the people to dedicate the boon to the passageway family member who might be suffering in hell.
Phra Maliyadeva’s Vision of Hell ~ พระมาลัย
Not having studied about Phra Maliyadeva’s vision of hell, I wandered around the many sculptures on the grounds, before Fon told me about the legend. According to his vision and teachings, there is a different type of hell for each kind of sin committed. Unlike the Western hell in which you suffer for all eternity, in their hell, you only suffer for “The length of many lifetimes.” The time you spend in hell will depend on the number of good deeds you did during your Earthly life.
หลายท่านคงเคยได้ยิน, ได้ฟัง, หรือได้อ่านเรื่องราวเกี่ยวกับพระมาลัยเถระ พระอรหันต์องค์หนึ่งที่ปรากฏนามในจารึกและวรรณกรรมทั้งในประเทศไทยและประเทศเพื่อนบ้าน เช่น เมียนมาร์, กัมพูชา และลาว อันมีเนื้อหาในการสั่งสอนโน้มน้าวให้พุทธศาสนิกชนทำความดี ละเว้นความชั่ว ด้วยเรื่องราวของสวรรค์และนรก เช่น เทพ-เทวดา, นรก, เปรต, การถวายทานและอานิสงฆ์, ธรรมะ, และพระศรีอริยะเมตไตรย (Meitreya Bodhisattva) เป็นต้น ตำนานอันปรากฏแพร่หลายจนซึมซับก่อเกิดความเชื่อและประเพณี มีการสวดพระมาลัยและการฟังเทศน์มหาชาติ ไปจนถึงผลงานจิตรกรรมและประติมากรรมตามวัดวาอารามทั่วประเทศไทย เช่นภาพด้านบนนี้เป็นตัวอย่างนรกภูมิซึ่งอยู่ภายในบริเวณวัดไผ่โรงวัว จังหวัดสุพรรณบุรี โดยปรากฏความตอนหนึ่งขณะที่พระมาลัยไปเยือนนรก เหล่าเปรตและสัตว์นรกทั้งหลายได้ขอให้พระมาลัยบอกญาติของตนให้ทำบุญอุทิศส่วนกุศลไปให้ พวกเขาจะได้อนุโมทนาบุญกุศลและพ้นกรรมโดยเร็วพลัน

A Hell for Sex Offenders ~ กระทะทองแดง
A huge wok is over a fire with boiling water, to boil those who committed sexual assault. The hell officers will throw the penetrating perpetrators into the hot boiling water; if they try to get out, the guard will stab and push them back in.
กระทะเหล็กใบใหญ่มหึมามีน้ำกำลังเดือดพล่านบนกองไฟร้อนระอุ —อุ๊ต๊ะ!.. นึกถึงภาพพระรูปหนึ่งนั่งอยู่ในกระทะเลยอ่ะ นี่ถ้าพวกในนรกรู้ทันนะ คงขอให้ท่านยมบาลเปลี่ยนมาเป็นน้ำผสมน้ำมันแน่ๆ (^O^)— เหล่าสัตว์นรกถูกจับโยนลงไปในกระทะที่มีน้ำร้อนเดือดปุดๆ แม้จะพยายามปีนหนีออกมาก็ถูกหอกของผู้คุมทิ่มแทงให้กลับลงไป นรกขุมนี้เป็นการลงโทษผู้ที่ได้ประกอบกรรมข่มขืนกระทำชำเรา ลวนลามผู้อื่น
Climbing the spiky & spooky tall cotton tree – ปีนต้นงิ้ว
Adulterers ~ ต้นงิ้ว
The scene pictured above shows what a person who commits adultery can expect. It seems that those who enjoyed a fling with someone married while on earth will spend their days in the netherworld climbing a tree of thorns. But it gets worse! As you near the top, a bird will try to peck your eyes out; when you climb back down, wild dogs will bite at you, forcing you to climb back up. In Phra Maliyadeva’s vision, he saw a whole forest of thorny trees and thousands of tortured souls, so the good news is you’ll have plenty of company.
You’ll be eaten by a hellhound! – ต้นงิ้ว
อ้าว…กำลังปีนไปเก็บดอกงิ้วมาทำน้ำเงี้ยวกันเหรอ!?…มะช่ายยยยยยย!!
ต้นงิ้วสูงสุดลูกหูลูกตา มีหนามยาวแหลมคม น่ากลัวกว่าต้นงิ้วในเมืองมนุษย์มากนัก หญิง-ชายใดไม่รู้จักอิ่มในรสสวาท นอกใจสามีภรรยาคู่รักของตน แล้วไปเสพสุขกับคนอื่น จะถูกลงโทษด้วยการปีนต้นงิ้ว หากขัดขืนจะถูกผู้คุมทิ่มหอกส่งขึ้นไป ครั้นพอขึ้นไปได้ครึ่งต้น ยังมีอีกาโฉบเข้ามาจิกเนื้อตัวและลูกตา สัตว์นรกต่างสู้ทนความเจ็บปวดและต้องทนปีนต้นงิ้วต่อไป หากร่างใครตกลงมาจะถูกกลุ่มสุนัขตัวเขื่องซึ่งคอยอยู่เบื้องล่างกระโจนเข้าฟัดกัดฉีกเนื้อหนัง
Large-handed Pret or Hungry Ghost – เปรต
Evil Children ~ เปรต มือโตเท่าใบลาน
Pret (Preta in Sanskrit, Peta in Pali) are one of the most popular types of ghosts in Thailand. They are also known as the “Hungry Ghost.” Thais describe this Pret as extremely tall and skinny, with a mouth the size of a needle hole. These pret have difficulty eating and are called hungry ghosts. Fon said her Granny told her not to argue or hurt her parents, or she will become this pret after dying. Children that hurt their parents physically will receive two hands as large as the palm leaves. It seems that there are many kinds of pret, including some that can only eat excrement or food that has fallen on the ground. Others have burned skin from head to toe, long necks, etc. Again, it depends on the bad acts of karma they committed last life.
เมื่อตอนเด็กๆ แม่ย่าบอกว่า “อย่าเถียง อย่าว่า อย่าขึ้นเสียง และอย่าทำร้ายพ่อแม่ มันบาป ตายไปจะเป็นเปรต ตัวสูงเสียดฟ้า มือโตเท่าใบลาน ปากเท่ารูเข็ม ผอมโซหิวโหย…..” อันที่จริงแม้เพียงแค่คิดร้ายก็บาปแล้วนะ

Besides hurting parents, sins such as giving food or gifts in a bad way or being stingy and not giving are also sins. For example, giving but teasing at the same time such as giving bad food or saying something bad to the recipient. Also, ignoring people that are hungry or in a difficult situation that you could help is a serious sin. “Live joyfully in this world, don’t apply “my own” to anything” quoted by Buddhadāsa Bhikkhu. Sharing is caring!
Disrespect a religious object or place? Count on spending some time in hell as a pret, too. Fon mentioned that she was taught that even thinking or doinging something extremely bad could doom one to becoming a pret! Hmm, I guess most religions are basically similar…
After reflecting on my tour of the Thai Buddhist hell, I feel like maybe their version of hell corresponds more closely with the Western concept of purgatory, only with punishment spelled out in the scariest of ways. The main difference I see is that their version of hell doesn’t last for all eternity, but considering the nature of the punishment and the fact that the duration is many, many lifetimes, why split hairs?
Getting There
Suphan Buri is about 100km from Bangkok which takes less than an hour to reach by bus. The road is good, so the ride is smooth. This is an easy day trip by bus. Head to the Bangkok Southern Bus Terminal, and book a trip on bus #68. The bus will be two-toned orange and aluminum and cost less than $4 per person. Just ask for SONG PEE NONG-BANGLI 68. This bus stops right in front of the temple–ask the ticket collector on the bus to stop at Wat Phai Rong Wua and let you know. The last bus from Suphan Buri departs at 5 PM so plan accordingly.
ตำราโบราณกล่าวถึงเปรต ว่าเปรตนั้นมีอยู่หลายจำพวกที่นอกเหนือจากกรรมที่กระทำต่อบิดามารดาแล้ว ก็ยังรวมถึงการทำบุญทำทานด้วยของเน่าเสีย, ล้อเลียนว่ากล่าวผู้มาขอทานและพระผู้มาบิณฑบาตร ตลอดจนพวกมีความตระหนี่หวงแหน มีอันจะกินแต่ไม่ทำบุญหรือให้ทานแก่ใคร, พวกขูดรีด เอาเปรียบ รังแกผู้อื่นให้เกิดความขัดสน-อดอยาก และรวมทั้งพวกที่เข้าไปในศาสนสถานแต่ขาดความเคารพหรือดูหมิ่นดูแคลนศาสนสถานนั้นด้วย
บอกตรงๆ ว่า แค่ศีล ๕ ข้อพื้นฐานสำหรับพุทธศานิกชน ดูง่ายๆ เบสิคๆ แต่ยากเหมือนกันเนอะ หรือเป็นเพราะโลกใบนี้อยู่ยาก สงสัยเราคงตกนรกแน่ๆ!! …เอาเป็นว่าเราต้อง “คิดดี” “คิดเป็นกุศล” เป็นลำดับแรก แล้วคำพูดกับการกระทำของเราจะได้ดีตาม
